      @@tavar16he’s definitely the best of the bunch, but he’s not a decent person. His character clearly has some sort of saviour complex, and he’s someone who gets off on trying to fix those worse off than him. Oliver clearly wasn’t the first he’d brought to Saltburn and the entire family have this weird saviour complex that we see in other characters like Pamela. Incredible story telling in that Felix is so charming we also don’t think much of it!

    • @DannyD-lr5yg
      @DannyD-lr5yg 11 місяців тому +100

      @@summer__444 Well, the other friend Felix brought was a childhood friend, so presumably from a fellow wealthy family - and the way he explains what happened to that friendship is pretty different than the impression Venetia and Farleigh gave.
      They made it sound like Felix simply grew tired of the friend, while Felix said the friendship fell apart because the friend started hooking up with Venetia - which is, imo, an understandable reason to get upset with a friend whom YOU invited home as your friend.
      I’m not saying Felix was a great person, and you’re right that a big part of why he was drawn to Oliver was because he thought Ollie needed “saving,” but I really don’t think that’s what his aforementioned previous summer friendship was about.
      Also, I personally think his savior complex was motivated by genuinely wanting to connect to and help the less fortunate, but that his good intentions were sullied by the potentially unbridgeable gap of the sheer magnitude of how out-if-touch his upbringing made him. In other words, out of the whole Catten family, Felix seemed to be most kindhearted and generous, and the least dazzled by wealth and status, yet he couldn’t quite escape the 20+ years of marinating in high society culture.

    I first saw Barry in American Animals which I watched for Evan Peters (My number crush of all time) I was impressed by Barrys acting so I watched Saltburn, oh and all the stuff people had been telling me about it.

      Wdym? Promising Young Woman had a lot of online buzz, especially when it came close to the award season which Fennell took home most of the Original Screenplay win including the Oscar

    The ending scene of Saltburn is a work of cinema mastery. It's possibly one of the best movie endings of all time. Or at least in the top 10.

    Yes, everyone, "Saltburn" was really that good. All of the cast and characters stood on their own.

    The kids love Saltburn. And I get it - it’s nasty and provocative and gorgeously produced.
    But what’s it trying to say? As Oliver’s true nature is revealed, the movie seems to turn class resentment into something monstrous and sociopathic.

      I'm kind of wondering about that too...I really loved Fennells first film (Promising Young Woman), because it had such a strong and nuanced message to tell and very clever ways to go about it. With this one, I was kind of confused. Couldn't figure out what the core of it was supposed to be. Obviously, it's beautiful to look at, but as a psychological thriller it fell flat for me - you could read the actors' portrayal wayyy to easily, I kept being told they were mysterious while simultaneously being able to read all of them easily. When the "twist" happened, I just said there like - yeah, obviously, that's what you've been showing me for over an hour? And what is it supposed to tell me?

      There is definitely still some form of social criticism with how ignorant and out of touch the Cattons are and how much they hold the fact that Farleighs parents are good for nothing over his head. But the point was I think that Oliver didn’t have a reason to resent them for their wealth. While I do believe that there is more separating the middle class from the 1% than the middle class from poverty, the defining factor seems to be struggle. Oliver didn‘t live in a mansion but he never struggled. He came from a good home, had loving parents, was able to attend Oxford and probably never wanted for anything. Not like the persona he invented for himself that came from a broken, poor home. So it turns out he is just a psycho. Maybe it illustrates how often people from the middle class dream about achieving that 1% status and to have that amount of disposable income, unaware that they are closer to homelessness than ever having that amount of money.
