      It really is cool to see. We get so used to installing them that we don't pay much attention to it, but seeing it in the video after the fact it sure does look pretty cool.

    I use the same rings in our soil here in Vegas and it works great. I have more sand and less clay that is typical, so mine rings tend to drain quicker, so I compensate with using 2 heads at opposite sides. Allows for more spread of the water. The rings are perfect to the fertilizer this time of year too. It works folks ... even in smaller spaces. Do it!! :)

    Your tree planting holes are so well-planned! I've never thought of having _two_ watering trenches around a tree, but it makes a lot of sense.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  6 місяців тому +3

      For newly planted trees it really does help. Especially in the areas where we have several trees on the same irrigation zone. This way we can water both up close when needed (I.E replacing a tree) and also further away for larger trees.

    You have such great soil compared to where I am. I'm all rock!! It's next to impossible to dig into.

      I have to admit, as we hear from folks all over the world we realize it's not nearly as challenging here as some folks have it. Rocks are just a pain all around!

      I'm also in the high desert in CA. The houses were built on a small hill, so in order to make the land flatted, they bulldozed the surface and removed the topsoil, exposed the rocks underneath, although the topsoil was not much better. Digging a hole is back breaking and needs several days with the help of pouring water from time to time. It's like banging the concrete. I tried to dig big holes for the fruit trees and amended the native soil with good soil , but in the past they did not thrive and dead after a few years , probably because I didn't mulch them enough and the trees were small and root-bounced in pots already from the nurseries ( the tree in this clip was very small too). The tilled ring in this clip is a great idea, and I'll make sure I'll keep the mulch thicker this time.

      Our soil in southern Utah is similar. The silt has settled into concrete hardpan with a touch of sand and rocks mixed in. Our local nursery told us to sprinkle gypsum in the fall to break up that layer and then wet the soil and drain before digging.
      It's made a horrible job planting a lot less horrible.

    Maybe you’ve covered this before but don’t the wood chips use up available nitrogen as they break down? I know you’re adding the fish emulsion and B1 but do you add extra nitrogen too?
    I think I need to re-do how we did our fruit trees except I have mine all planted in gopher cages. The gophers and moles here are horrendous! Should I build a small irrigation channel outside of the cage?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  6 місяців тому +2

      We get that question a lot in regards to woodchips, but there are no issues there as long as they remain on TOP of the soil. The only place where nitrogen is taken up is at the point of contact with the carbon (wood chips). Gophers and moles, that is a REAL challenge. If you're having to cage them out I would do as you're suggesting and put that ring just outside of the cage.

    Thank you so much for putting out such fantastic videos! I took this information and modified it to our property that has a 4% grade. Open swales on the "high" side to catch the water and used an inner ring to keep water off the root area when we get monsoon downpours. I think it's going to work great so thank you for the idea!

    It's always good to see a new tree going in. That keyhole irrigation system is genius. Donno about latte, but raspberry always sounds good!
    The pineapple guavas from Planting Justice came yesterday. They're 2 feet tall from the top of the pot and husky, healthy, and wow! I'm very happy that you set me on the nursery. One is Unique, and can't remember the other right off hand. An hour ago that un was put in at one end of a bed with a red flame grape on the other end, and annuals (fava beans) inbetween. 1/4 cup of 5-1-1 fish emulsions in one gallon rain water.
    The trench was dig down 3 feet, 3 wide, and 25 long, backfilled with tons of logs, brush, leaves and always a lot of coffee grounds. Why dig a trench? Tohono said to! Aside from that blame it on all those evil coal miner's genes from both side the fam.
    The grape has 18 inches of shredded palm leaves on it, and bone black for phosphorus. All the cast ironware was burned off, and a bushel of dried bones with it. The whole garden got some but it should have been done in the fall, not February. niio, kids!

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  6 місяців тому

      We don't water figs at all during the Winter months when they're dormant. The only exception is if we get no rain at all for at least a month and then we'll watering sparingly to keep some soil moisture. Spring and Fall it's once/week. Peak of summer before monsoon it's twice/week, then back down to once/week.

    Hmmm raspberry latte fig? I may have to find another planting spot! Watched the planting demo carefully. Much more prep on the irrigation than the hole. Our alkaline soul in s Utah is devoid of anything but silt and rocks so i did plant in wider holes. Just starting to drag the hose around for a second watering this month. How often do you fill your trenches with water? Dragging a house around to each?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  6 місяців тому +1

      Most of our trees are on automatic irrigation, this being one of the few exceptions. This will receive irrigation once/week during the growing season and up to twice a week at the peak of Summer before the monsoon season kicks in. That is pretty much the same for the vast majority of our trees here on the farm and all of our other fig trees as well.

      You didn't mention what zone you're in, but ice storms tell me you must be below zone 9. Many varieties are good down into zone 7, but too cold and they die back to the roots (or further if your ground freezes). You'll have to let us know how they do come Spring. Fingers crossed....🤞

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm

      We don't worry about it here, because we irrigate away from the trunk and we're so very dry. In areas with higher humidity and can be a real problem leading to decay on the trunk.
