After I got LPI: Linux Essentials, I basically neglected my Linux admin skills while I concentrated on Network+ and Server+. Now I’m enrolled in a training program focused on getting Security+, CEH, and CCNA (R&S and Security) and I’m now combining through old notebooks of CLI libraries and tips so I can become proficient at Linux enough to utilize Kali at a professional level.

Whenever learning linux, just use virtualbox using kali linux and start practicing linux commands using capture the flag/war games on OvertheWire.org that way you learn linux as well as hacking mindset. Most of it is nothing but linux command games. Lots of tutorials out there too incase you get stuck.
Using the vm prevents you from farting up your actual computer, can still use hacking tools if needed, and use linux.
I use my macbook in this way and learned a ton doing so in this fashion

I tired to run Ubuntu on my desktop which has a Radeon RX 480 Graphics card in it. It wouldn't work. I eventually found out that there is no graphics driver for Ubuntu. Not sure if that was your Mac issue since I don't know much about the graphics in those things.
A few people posted some workarounds, but it was WAY too much trouble and not something I had the energy to worry about maintaining all the time. I've found that pretty much every version of Linux works best on Intel machines with integrated graphics. IMO Thinkpads make the best Linux laptops. Or else you need to make sure there's a driver for whatever distro your running for whatever graphics you're running. Kali seems to be the most compatible with the most graphics cards in my experience, but I'm not a long time Linux user.
I'm also working in learning more Linux fundamentals. What's been helping is Cybrary's Linux+ course. I also try and follow along with Shannon Morse who does Linux terminal command videos over at Hak5. Both are good, and great for the budget. Free.

@gilkesisking Thanks for the tips. I am able to run Ubuntu in VM and that VM is installed on Kali. But I can't USB boot it successfully. Not that it's a huge deal on the desktop, but that stopped me from installing it on bare metal on one of the other drives.
I will investigate more based on your info. Thanks.

I'm confused. The command line for OS X and Linux are like 99% the same.
