Audi A4 wiper defective repair (relay 377)

  • There is lot's of trouble with this wiper, used on Audi A4 about 1997/2001.
    In fact, the main problem comes from the arm of the wiper who stuck easily.
    It produce a hight current in the circuit, and the fuse doesn't melt...

    Hi! Thank you for this video! I had the same issue on Mk4 (Bora 2001), I clean the contacts, re-soldering and is working perfect.

    @gamester57 Between the driver's door and the begin of the
    dashboard. You must open the door: the left side of the dashboard have a fuse box, and there is a hole, you can see approximatively under the steering wheel lot's of relay, and the biggest is the 377 relay. You can plug on your glace wiper and feel the relay who emit some noises or vibration. Thanks for watching :)

    Had this problem today, €66 for new one. So I macgyvered it. The problem is the gap on the busted relay, It's too big. I fixed this by creating a strip of tinfoil the correct thickness and wrapped it in behind the contact and glued it to the black plastic on the outside. All it needs is to make the gap smaller so timing isn't the issue. Tested 100%. Not sure how long itll last but saved me some cash for now......

      +Cyber Max I did something like that, but finaly replaced the relay on the pcb by the new one.

    @musicdivers le relais 377 = essuie-glaces. Pour ton soucis, si toutes les vitres ne fonctionnent plus = fusible 30A, côté gauche conducteur, entre la portière et le tableau de bord. Sinon, il faut vérifier la commande centralisée (située à l'arrière sous l'aile droite sur une A4, à VOIR pour une A3). Peut etre l'emplacement n'est pas le même, les relais sont aux mêmes endroits que le 377 je pense. Je te conseille une recherche supplémentaire sur google, et la revue technique de ton A3.

    Just bought a second hand unit from a scrap yard. Cost me €10 and not exactly difficult to fit. Much simpler.

    Thank you very much for your video! I had exactly the same issue with my relais 377. I opened it and cleaned the contacts using a very fine rasp. I built it together but it still doesn't work! I hear clicking when I change wipers speed but I still have only one wipers speed like before. Do you have an idea what could be wrong? Merci beaucoup!

      Hi. Thank you for your coment. On your 377 box you have two relay. Try to see if you have good contact on each, and verify the contact with a multimeter and finger press. You have two contacts for each relay, "sleep contact and work contact", they are very important each.You absolutely need to do this check before to replace 377 box in your car.
      Now, after check the contact of " sleep and work" contact of each relay, and not win the hight speed wiper, may be you have a bad contact on your command arm.
      The wiper use a power resistor hided under the bonet of the car to create low voltage for decrease the speed, so, if the hight speed is not present mean than you have not problem with resistor but with contact comand.
      Try each contact with a multimeter before to go faster...

      Alexander Hartdegen Salut et je te remerci beaucoup! I've checked both relais with multimeter: the both sleep and work contacts on each relais are fine. As I said only the highest speed is funktioning and when I switch down the arm the wipers use to stop in the middle. In the last few months the wipers suddenly worked properly (all speeds) but only for a few minutes. It really sucks. Do you know how I can check the wipers switch and/or check whether it works properly? Looks like my relais is fine?

      Waldi Berger ok You must to check two points: you have rotary contacts on stucked to the motor of the wiper. You must dismount the wiper, and you will found a "rotary encoder", builded with lot's of rotary contacts in. If your relay doesn't stop at the good place, you probably have a bad/destroyed contact on this " rotary contact encoder". This " rotary contact encoder" are used to give a electrical situation about the wiper to the 377 relay. If one of them doesn't work, you will have the same effect.
      You must clean and give a best tight to the contact spring. If they are to much damaged, you need to change it...
      -For the speed, check the contact of your comand's arm (called in french " the comodo")
      -For the " doesn't stop at the good place", check the " rotary swich encoder" inside the wiper's motor.
      You probably have damaged contact on your arm's comand and your rotary switch.

      Hey bro! Thank you for your comments! I've put the wiper motor apart - there's a lot of grease on the disc and three contacts. Is this grease actually conductive? How can I actually check motor (away from the car)? Also how can I check if the wipers switch work and how can I take it out? Thx!!

      Waldi Berger Grease are not conductive in this point. If the wiper works, don't dismount it. Try to check the rotative contact disc without dismounting all the systeme if you can, it's not mandatory.If wipers move, motor is good, don't look too far in this point. You must clean contact of rotary system, and be sure they are not grinded. If it's be, you need to change all system.
      You can tight the contact inside the rotary disc to be sure it have good contact (with long nozzle clamp)
      If this contact on the rotary disc are good, don't look for the trouble in this part. As I told you on last comment, may be you have problem coming from the arm command in your car, near the direction wheel. If you cleaned the 377 relay and if you heard it to " clic" that's the problem comes not from this. I suspected it comes from you arm command.
      You can test the motor by injecting 12v comming from battery directly to the motor's contact (need to be naked).
      Check your copper contact on the rotary disc (if you can't check it easily, dismount it with dismounting plastic screws on the plastic band on the bottom wind screen shield). If they are not grinded, the problem comes from your arm comand, near from the direction wheel.
      CHECK YOUR ARM COMMAND.

    6 months ago I replaced the contacts with new ones. It worked. But the problem came back. I opened the relay and the contacts are looking well. But the whipers do not stop....

    I have another problem , maybe you can help, the wipers works fine , but the water that suposed to come out dosent work. i checked the fuse , its ok , i checked if i have water , its ok . but still no waters pumps out. and i cant hear any sound. If im right i have to hear the litle motor that should pump the water out right ?

      Dont trust on the fuse. May be it's not the good fuse. You have to check all the fuses. You have to disconnect the motor's wire and connect a light bulb or multimeter on it. You must find 12 volts when you send signal. If you find a 12 volts signal when you activate the water, may be your motor is dead, or gripped.
      Dismounted it, clean it, put oil on it, and connect it directly to a 12 volts source.
      If it always doesn't work you must change the motor.
      If you dont find 12 volts on the wire's motor conexion, may be your handle comand is dead. You have to check all the fuse on your board.

      Thanks for the advices, il try this first time tomorow. Can u explain a lil bit were is the motor ? (I have an Audi a4 b5) and i have this car for about 1 week. Seems the last owner keept this failure a secret until today whend i wanted to wash my window.

      Thank you , found the problem , seems the last owner tryed to solder the wires and kinda didnt have any ideea how to do it. It had a lot of tape on it and the motor wasnt connected right. Now its works :)

    Hi I have similar problem on my 2012 A4. I have the warning light that comes on most of the time( not every time), when the light is on sometime wiper works. What could be the problem?

    Salut, j’ai une probleme sur ma voiture et quand je coupe mes essuie glace parfois ils s’arrêtent mais parfois ils continuent à tourner indéfiniment tout dépend de leurs envie. Tu pense que le problème pourrais venir du relais 377 comme dans ta vidéo ? Merci pour t’as réponse

      il y a un contacteur dans les essuies glaces également, il peut faire défaut. Le tout serait de vérifier l'intégrité de ces contacts là et de vérifier les relais, qu'ils ne restent pas collés.
      Sinon je pense que la première chose à faire serait de vérifier les relais présents dans le boitier 377 oui.

      +Renaat De Block it's a good idea. We can also change completely the relay by a new one, not the same, with make jumping wire to the contacts.

      Ah yes, I was wondering if I could do the same on mine, as the contacts on the other relay are completely clean. I'm not even sure the other relay is being used. Does it do anything? It obviously doesn't carry much current, and perhaps the 'bad' contact arm would be OK in that relay. (My 377 relay is in a Mk4 Golf.) Did you find that was a long-term fix?

      Yup, I swapped the two relay contact arms over and it seems fine. Very quick and easy to do. The bad one had almost the whole contact pad burned away. I filed it as clean as I could without filing it all away, and it makes a good low-resistance contact now. And since that bad one is now on the relay that obviously carries less current, I think it will be OK. That 'bad' relay now has a shiny new contact arm, and should last a few years more. Anyway, it looks like I just saved £46 by repairing that relay, so I'm happy.
      I don't know what I'd do without all these UA-cam experts. Well, I do know: I'd be paying VW garages a lot of money for them to play around and eventually fix these things. I honestly think the guys making these UA-cam videos collectively have more reliable knowledge than any single VW technician.

    The entire relay can be replaced for about $10???? Why do this repair unless you need it because of all of the nuclear fallout raining from the sky AND all of the stores are closed?

      @@paulmorrison1822 yes I found the location but for me it was not from the relay. have a problem with the pins on the arms. you have to take down the whole mechanism to disassemble it, clean and grease it and attach it again if your motor is not burnt out yet.
      my wipers started and stopped in the middle of the glass

      @@Prince-nt4dc the motor on mine has been tested and is working good been told its the relay i bought it from audi but saying now they wont tell me where it is incase it fails and i crash if it doesnt work its stupid, so i have the part but dont know its location
