  • I own the Shoei RF1200 helmet and the transition shield caught my attention a while back however after using it for some time, I've found it's limitations and so I find myself carrying a clear and dark smoke shield on me to swap out rather than using the transition shield.

I've been using mine on the RF1200 for 4+ years. I carefully clean it after use and after thousands of miles, it shows minimal wear. I'm not sure how you would need to replace yours so often. Yes, occasionally (riding into a setting sun), I would like a darker shield, but overall, I won't ride without it. YMMV

I have to disagree who replaces their shields every year I haven’t replaced mine in 4 years works perfect by the time I’m on my bike putting my gloves on the shields already dark and when the suns beginning to set it’s clear without me even noticing it. I love it it’s literally the best piece of gear I’ve ever bought. I used to have a dark shield on mine because it looks cooler but after way too many days where I would be stuck out in town at night barely being able to see I made the switch and have never looked back.

I've worn transition lenses on my glasses for 20 years and on my visors for 3 years. They get very dark and work as advertised

To be fair I use Arai x7-v alongside a light smoke visor (road legal) with the transition pinlock which does the job fine, for those bright days. Double tint does the job.

I understand the price, if you’ve ever bought photochromic lenses in a pair of glasses you’ll know they’re not cheap and that’s for a fraction of the surface area of a visor. The last thing you want is something cheap that is optically poor. I just wish Shoei would put an internal drop down visor in more of their helmets because for my money that’s the best solution. Shoei charge crazy money for their helmets and they’re really basic compared to what other brands offer.

      @Cocobeachhippie 4 роки тому +5

Matt Swainston The reason they don’t have drop down visors is because it comprises the safety and integrity of a helmet. No drop down sun shield helmet is ECE or SNELL certified. You will find them with just DOT, but DOT is an honor system certification (scary). DOT also does not test chin bar integrity on full face helmets. IMO a safer choice for a helmet must have either ECE or SNELL certifications besides just DOT.

For people with glasses a transition shield or drop down visor is a God send. I have a bell qualifier dlx and a shoie gt air. Getting blinded by the sun is a quick way to crash.

Sonic Moto I live in Australia and had my eyes lazered so have to wear sunglasses nearly all the time. Have the shoei transition lens and never have an issue with it not being dark enough, in fact sometimes I pull my visor up and have to pull it down again because my eyes hurt. I’m thinking you might have got a dodgy visor.

Replacing a helmet shield every year or two, what are you cleaning it with? I've been riding 18+ years and have never replaced a helmet shield. I replace helmets every 5 to 6 years and always have two usable helmets. I had a Bell Star with a transition shield but I prefer to have at least one helmet with a drop down inner visor. Carrying an extra shield around is a pain, definitely on sport bikes.

Great review. I have the same complaints that you have but, they dont prevent me from using the shield. I ride to work sometimes in the afternoon then, ride home after midnight. Love it for that use. I do wish it would get darker though.

Thank you for this - very helpful. I just bought a new Shoei and wondered how the photochromatic lens worked when the sun is low; I suspected there wouldn’t be enough UV to trigger a strong darkening. (When you arguably need it most)

I ended up buying helmet with clear lens and it has built in flip down internal tint lens. I can flip down the dark tint lens on sunny days and flip it back up when it gets dark. Works great. I have owned transition eyeglasses before and they darkened super fast in sunlight But didn’t fully go clear that fast. Seemed to always have a light tint for several minutes after leaving sunlight which was annoying IMO.

Had the Bell transition shield I paid $135, then upgraded to the Shoei transition for $160 (not that much of a price jump going from a $200 helmet to a $500 helmet). So far, the Shoei transition one is much better than the Bell version. I have the same issues with the Bell & Shoei shield not being enough dark enough when riding into the sunrise/sunset. I wish it worked for all cases, but I just have to keep a cheap pair of dark sunglasses on me that I can put on real quick if I find myself in that situation. Other than that, I love it for any other time of the day!

I've found the low fall sun is too much for the transition. I have to add sunglasses under it. Still would buy again. I don't foresee replacing very often. I'm pretty careful with it.

I work 2nd shift, so it’s daytime on my way to work, and dark when I get off. Not getting dark enough is the one thing that makes me nervous about the photochromic visor, but I’m tired of carrying and switching out my visor everyday. I caved in and ordered one today, so fingers crossed, we’ll see how it works.

Cousin is permanently blind in one eye. The other eye is practically useless because he can't tell paper bills apart, can't see the time, one of us has to assist him when we took him out for dinner or walks.
Way back 1990's optical shops sells 'photo grey' lens. These glasses (real glass) when expose to direct sunlight, took minutes to darken, and they are not as dark as today's photochromic glasses.
Now, I always keep my sunglasses handy because I don't want to end up like my cousin when I retire.

I stopped watching at "blob of molten metal..." The Sun is not made of metals. It's composed nearly entirely of helium and hydrogen. The fact that you didn't know that and that you can't figure out why a photochromic shield costs more than a clear or tinted shield says something. If you have a college degree you should get a refund and your folks should get their school taxes back.
