    I remember learning to fly in the C-152 many years ago. With a left crosswind I can still hear my instructor telling me to stop the crab by using right rudder and dipping the left wing into the crosswind. The landing happens on the left main, then the right, and the nosewheel. This keeps the plane aligned with the runway at touchdown. Keep the yoke turned into the wind as you taxi.

    • @KyleCowden
      @KyleCowden 2 роки тому +4

      Absolutely. My first major cross wind takeoff and landings (12 g 15) I kept it straight down the center line and my instructor sang my praises. I was so proud that it came naturally at such a low time experience. I did manage to give him plenty of opportunity for correction in subsequent hours. 🙄

      The “shudder” you experienced on landing may have been the side-load on your mains. 😊

      Always believed a slip was better than a crab. Had one day of nothing but crosswinds (in OK) where the student and I tried to see who could keep it on the upwind wheel longer.

    Great to see you highlighting this awesome product, Jonathan! This is one app that I always have running. I love the camera shakes, the random sneezing, and the cries of sheer terror from my passengers. FS Realistic makes my flying (mostly in VR these days) so much more realistic and challenging. :)

    I bought it last week. It takes some tweaking but eventually you'll get it to give that extra immersion. I've send FSR my wish-list and got word back they will improve- and enhance the addon in the near future. For example I'd like to hear the 'runway light bump' on takeoff. I think the team (2 persons) is doing a great job developing and supporting. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

    Did they change flight physics with the FS Realistic Pro Add-on? With the previous updates the C172 still felt sloppy and did not behave as the real one...

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 роки тому

      Sim update 10 brought a lot of changes. There are numerous videos of real-world aircraft pilots testing MSFS in recent weeks and months - and attesting that it's very, very good now. One video I saw was a real-world pilot checking X-Plane and MSFS side-by-side, and he said MSFS was far more like the real aircraft now. I think the big change has been CFD, which is now built into the MSFS flight model and provides a closer simulation than the blade element system using in X-Plane.

    The sounds are much better than the standard sounds for haptic feedback as well. If you turn off all the "extras" (Clear Prop and Screaming etc.) that have nothing to do with the vibrations in the aircraft it makes a reasonable alternative to buying and fiddling with the various haptic software products, especially if you have a DIY haptic set up. I think the writers of FS Realistic should look at adding some strictly haptic tools to this product which would give it a wider market. I have 7 Daytona "pucks" attached to my rig driven by 2 cheap usb sound cards (4 in cushions on my chair, 1 on each rudder pedal and 1 on the yoke. As I had already purchased FSRealistic Pro I decided to use it together with Voicemeeter donationware and I am pretty happy with the results.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 роки тому

      There are two widely used techniques when landing in cross-winds - either aligning with the centreline just before touchdown, or after touchdown. There's a really good video about it over at Kelsey's 747Gear youtube channel. Neither approach is incorrect.

    • @stallspin2953
      @stallspin2953 2 роки тому

      @@jonbeckett You don't want to land a small plane in a crab then correct on the ground like that; airliners are built for it but in a Cessna you'll roll the tires off the wheel hubs from side-loading (I've had students do it). In small planes you can dip the upwind wing into the wind and use opposite rudder to keep the nose lined up with the centerline, or you can crab all the way down and kick the rudder to line up right before touchdown. We don't usually teach the first method if you're going to move up into larger aircraft because you risk hitting a wingtip on the ground in large low-wing planes.

    Quick point from a pilot, you should hold full aileron into the wind at the beginning of your takeoff and then relaxing it as you accelerate. I wonder if that might explain some of the yawing on takeoff.

      @@jonbeckett No problem, I get it. Frankly I am not so much of a fan of the add on since having my head bounced around and sound effects I would never hear in the plane is not something I desire. Most of us pilots use ANR headsets and the engine noise covers up almost everything else. I think I would have a heart attack if I heard all the creaking and groaning I know is happening. I used to fly a metal wing Schweicer 1-26 glider and it would constantly “oil can” as you maneuvered. I know my Cessna does the same but lucky I can’t hear it.

    I own FS Realistic Pro and yes it does ad some realism into the sim and certainly makes the experience more satisfying however, having flown P3D for quite some time with similar addons one in particular being EzDok. FS Realistic in comparison is a poor cousin compared to EzDok, sure EzDok was more a camera addon but the effects were far more controllable and realistic. FS Realistic Pro has a long way to go but that’s just my opinion.

      Hey Matt, FSRealistic here.
      Thank you for the great feedback.
      Note that Microsoft still didn't release camera movement support within its SDK so we are limited here.
      Try comparing us with similar products in MSFS.
      If you find anything better than us let us know, we always want to improve.

    Whats funny is x plane for ipad has some of these features and base microsoft fs on a gaming pc doesnt come with it. Kinda funny like the flap airdrag sound. Btw no hate on flight simulator its clearly the best one but some of these things should be included without having to download mods.

    Looks like it's time to buy a new flite sim. Maybe time to build my own simulator. I've seen some very realistic aircraft controls made for the PC. I wonder if I can get a real cockpit from an old Robinson helicopter that's been gutted out, and build the interior to simulate a variety of vehicles. I might even make a lot of the parts on my 3D printer...
    Who says you can't have fun in your mid-seventies?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  2 роки тому

      It's just simulating the movement of the aircraft in the air. I can see in VR it would be an issue, because your brain dials out movement anyway (it's pretty good at it too). Having it forced back upon it will feel odd.

      @@jonbeckett been doing VR and flying since 2014 and DK2. The bobbing is wrong. In racing sims there is an option to lock view to horizon or the eyepoint direction to a point at infinity which is essential. in this fs2020 it's just not right, and the bobbing is not good.

      I don't think it's overpriced at all. The developer has spent a lot of time and effort working on it, and what it tries to do, it does very well.

    I did like XPrealistic v2 for X plane 11 but I am reluctant to give them any more money now. I bought my XPrealistic on steam but they pulled it off Steam a short while back and left me with an unusable DLC add on that no longer works without an activation code. Not a good way to treat customers who are now out of pocket. I am sure FSrealistic is just as good in Microsoft flight simulator but shady business practices puts me off buying it.
    Edit: should also note when you email this company they will ignore you and steam wont help either. It is what it is now can't do anything about it.

    Airplanes shouldn't be landed while crabbed as the gear gets side-loaded and risks damage and collapse.

      I've answered this again, and again, and again - I was throwing the plane around to illustrate the effect of doing just that. You saw the plane shudder? It wouldn't have happened if we had straightened up. It won't happen without FSRealistic either.

    It`d be really dangerous to take off the 152 below 50 knots, I tend to teach my students to rotate it at 55 kts and climb 60 KIAS Vx, 70 KIAS Vy. For safety, it's not recommended to fly near the stall speed and at velocity of minimum control. To be honest, that's what I don`t like about this Simulator, all the good job they did with scenery is wasted with poor flight dynamics and flight characteristics. Take off and landing with cross wind is far from what it is in real life making even it harder to fly on the sim. Thanks for the video!

      Any time I go anywhere near dangerous conditions I get comments like yours :) I was just showing the "FS Realistic" effects - which the strong winds highlighted. There's no way anybody in their right mind would fly in those conditions in real life :)
