I would absolutely, 100%, recommend the tomb kings expanded mod for any tomb kings play through.

No tomb scorpions = how not to build a (good) tomb king army.

To everyone who wants a tad bit more firepower in the early game, it is possible to get a casket of souls very early

How to Build Tomb King Armies: you need a lot of CALCIUM to make them strong bones💪💪💪💪

Good early and mid game comp, however for endgame any non-construct melee unit is going to perform poorly. I would replace the skeletons with tomb scorpions and exchange your ushabti for more stalkers.

are stalkers better than ushabti bows?

    • @captainseabass874

Either work. Really depends on what you’re going against. Use bows for monstrous or large races and stalkers for infantry

Stalkers are anti-large and good at hunting monsters and taking cavalry charges. Their ammo is too low for them to be much good against infantry.

Depends on if they have an anti large counter army. There's nothing wrong with having trash units up front as fodder. That's the point of TK. They're expendable and replaceable.

Tomb Kings need the Chaff! Losing your tomb guard is fine, their deaths power the Realm of Souls. Just make sure you don't lose your single entity monsters or heroes.

My end game armies are all made up of a single unit. One army of necrosphinxes, one army of warsphinxes, one army of hierotitans, etc. This is so you can specialize their commanders' bonuses to give maximum output for them and some of the special dynasty tomb kings provide bonuses to a particular type of unit or another so they're good to pair up with.
Warsphinx army, necrosphinx army, hierotitan army, bone giant army, and two scorpion armies make up the vanguard of my forces that are responsible for most engagements and city crushing. Each of these primary construct armies has its own necrotect. For Settra himself, I like to be a bit thematic with his personal army. I load up all my tomb princes into his army, I forget how many he can get, like 9 of them I think? Slap all of them on horses, give all of them the best possible war gear from your mortuary cult and each one will turn into an absolute monster. I specialize Settra's skills into buffing tomb guard as well and he gets 3 of the special elite tomb guard units he can use, so I throw them in his army as well. Then the other slots I usually stick any extra constructs that won't fit into their specific armies due to having more than 18 cap. I often throw Settra on a horse as well because it lets him and his absolute assassin hit squad of princes stay together and annihilate the enemies in hit and run attacks. The warsphinx does more damage, but its size makes it rather terrible because it takes so much more damage from ranged units and is easily surrounded and beat on by many melee units as well, the smaller target of the horse makes it a better choice. The chariot is also good, but i'm too lazy to micromanage it. A lot of folks go for warsphinx or chariot because they see bigger numbers but that settra on a horse is almost unkillable he is so durable.
The rest of my armies are generally made up of like 15 tomb guard and 3-4 tomb guard with halberds and I may or may not pair these armies with a liche priest. Their sole purpose in life is defending my walled cities on the border from enemies. I find that lining the walls with tomb guard and then clumping all my halberd tomb guard in front of the gate gets very, very good results. They can defend incredibly well most of the time and just keep the walls secure to let the towers do the heavy lifting. It wins more of the time, takes a pretty specific army to win or just being completely overwhelmed. As long as they're defending a fortified city, these tomb guard armies do really well. I think their autoresolve probably always loses, but playing them manually results in a win just about every time.

I like to think of the large tomb king constructs as your average fantasy rpg group. You got the scout/assassin(tomb scorpion), the mage/wizard(hierotitan), the archer/marksman(bone giant), the normal soldier/warrior build(khemrian warsphinx), and the monster hunter(necrosphinx)

Honestly any late game comp unit that isn't a construct is going to be decimated so no sweat for not being able to keep them alive. Thats kind of the point of tomb kings since they get free units. They're meant to be fodder.
Either keep recycling them between battles or replace the front entirely with constructs. The choice depends on if you're up against an anti large army.

I think these army compositions have a little too much unit variety. With any faction and with the Tomb Kings especially you should be taking advantage of the red line unit buffs and build a more specialized army with less variety but units that work well as a team. It is actually better to bring 2 tomb king armies together as a single legion in the early-mid game. I trait farm for a prepared lord for the archers, dedicated to asaph and boosting skeletal archers and Ushabti great bows in the red line. You could also bring 2 archer spams but capacity might prohibit that at first. My second army is usually skeleton warriors/spears backed up by melee ushabti to provide a front line for the archer spam. I save my Tomb Scorpions for a doomstack and send them out to collect black books.
My late game comp for Settra is tomb guard spam with 4 caskets, 2 chariot master tomb princes, and his starting warsphinx with a supporting army consisting of archers, ushabti great bows and bone giants. . If you skip the blue line with Settra you can save just enough skill points for him to get skullstorm upgraded and arcane conduit, the resurrect ability at the end of the red line, as well as the desert strike ability at the end of the melee line. He misses out on some melee stats and spells with a hybrid build but he is still very powerful if you do it right. I always put him on his warsphinx mount, the chariot of the gods is not that great in my opinion. I would only use the chariot mount if you were going for a chariot master tomb prince doomstack, which takes ages to trait farm and there aren't enough princes in total for a full stack.

I'm considering getting the tomb kings DLC and from this video, looks like the ranged and monster stuff I like is well covered. Worth getting?

I'd say go for it. They are pretty slow at the start but rather fun overall. If you want some cheese for them legendoftotalwar covers them pretty well

I enjoyed them. Khalida is a much easier campaign then the others imo & you can listen to her yell about snakes & vampires.

Any self-sustained TK army must include a casket of souls. Its extremely important to get one as early as possible using the initial 5000 gold you start with, not having it in the early game is shooting yourself in he leg, no matter what strategy you go with.
2x catapults in a single army is not a very optimal, you only get 1 capacity cap from the building and its much better off putting the 2nd one in another army. casket of soul + catapult is a much better and flexible combination.
I think you could have done a better comp for the battle example, this was not a good showcase in my opinion.

It needs Tomb Scorpions. Those are better at dealing with pesky infantry than Tomb Guard.

This is bad advice for the tomb kings. No tomb scorpions and too many different units requiring tons of micro managing not to mention the amount of skill points needed to max out the skill tree of 6+ different units.

Dont speak so fast. Mumbling is not exactly good for UA-cam videos. Dont be afraid to make the video longer.

  • @gmabitx1

I don't know if someone has said this before or not, but both of you talk WAY TOO FAST..... It was like watching the video on 1.5x speed, as if you were hard pressed to not make the video longer than 23 mins or idk.
I decided to stop watching once the second guy just picked up even more tempo in his speech and I realised I'm having to focus way too much, way too often, to understand simple but key parts of the video.
