I would not complain about Kuala Lumpur being underrated. I will hate it if many people know about it. I do not want Kuala Lumpur crowded with craziness. I love Kuala Lumpur stay as friendly family places. That is just the way how we brought and grew up, peacefully and harmoniously.

I'm from KL and recently went to HCM. Honestly, I can't stay there due to the pollution, horrendous traffic, very undeveloped and not international friendly. Maybe because when you have stayed in a more developed city, it's hard to stay elsewhere, I'm still okay with BKK though. Holidays are fine though. :)

Have plenty of friends there in our age group 60+ who enjoy going out and having fun on the weekends. You are so right the movie theaters there are way cheaper we go often and the movies are first run and sometimes come out even before hitting the US theaters go figure. The malls are humongous and put the USA malls to shame LOL. Our favorites are Pavilion, KLCC. Mid Valley/Megamall ,One Utama and Bangsar shopping. Food is amazing...from Chinese to Indian to Fusion to Western... Hopefully we'll be able to go sometime this year. Good luck in your future travels.

KL is also cleaner, and people are more educated in KL and suburbs. In BKK i get ripped off, but in KL never happened in my life. And I have been to both over 13 times. Lived in both too. Having lived in Bangkok 10 years, i would give second thoughts about coming back to live there now in spite of all my thai network of friends and the fact i still refer to Thailand as a second home. Cost of living has risen dramatically - everything is about the money now - and while international grocery stores are easily found, the price of imported food is extortionate because of very high import duties. When Big C was the property of French retailer Casino, and when Carrefour was still operating in the country, they both carried a nice selection of affordable though limited selection of imported food. Now you need to rely on Gourmet market / Food Hall by Central and Villa supermarkets and they are really, i mean really expensive. I never thought i would say this, but my destination of choice for moving back to SEA would have to be KL where i found the cost of living to be way more reasonable than Bangkok these days.Apartments, choice of local cuisines, mix of Asian cultures, english spoken everywhere, close proximity to Singapore, incredibly cheap imported food items from all over the world : KL has turned into a very fine place to live !

They rest of the year if very good. Also, Bangkok is very good for cultural events. The art scene is very good. Music and dance is very good. The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra is excellent and plays free concerts in the park January & February. And Thai cultural festivals are not to be missed. Finally, Thai street food is world renown. I’ve visited KL once and I can see that it is more family friendly.

    Fair comments.
To live, KL is the best to live. Easy to adapt as English is more widely spoken comparing to those cities and at the same time, to learn Chinese too. (Best combination of English and Chinese as if you have 'conquered the most universal and most spoken language on earth).
    We have superb medical facility
although (I feel our medical tourism marketing isn't as aggressive as in Bangkok).
Ample food varieties to choose in KL. You may easily get Thai food in KL but not necessarily it is easily avail to find Malaysian food in Bangkok/HCM.
We are not perfect but we at least understand and have higher tolerance level (culturally and religion) as Malaysia is a multi racial community.
To live in a place is ability to adapt and being inclusiveness in the local community; not just staying within expat area or focusing on the touristy areas. Cost is main factor when comes to retirement and to have the least major language barrier. KL has big selection of affordable and luxury living (depending on individual financial ability and their choice)
In contrast, I personally like Thailand for tourism purposes and to 'wind down'.
Am proud to be Malaysian and is a perfect place in an imperfect way.

Well, I am a Malaysian Chinese, I don't want to sound as if I'm being biased at all. But after being to the other 2 countries over & over again, I've to say, Malaysia is still a little bit nicer. Over all, the things you mentioned basically. I do love Vietnam, especially north part. However, the amount of bikes and noises & lack off rules, drove me nuts. Their food is great though. Bangkok, for me is way too crowded, less English speaking, even though they may have more things there to choose from. I do enjoy being there like a few days, but definitely not a long term. Bars & clubs aren't my thing, so basically there's nothing much left after gone there for 1/2 a dozen times, every time, it seems to get busier. Moreover, their local food, isn't my fave. International food, yes. But Malaysia has those too.
With that being said, I think all this 3 countries are great!!!
We hope Malaysia continues to deliver... & yes, it's rather underrated, but is ok. 😊
    Cheers from PJ/Malaysia

Penang also have international airports, Qatar air offers direct flights to Europe. Penang has both mixed and balanced modern infrastructure and Nature. I could easily go to the beach after my working hours just using my old bike, and you don't have chance to do that in KL....NO WAY!. We have spent time in all of them. some more than others. But I think we will be going to Bangkok for a couple of years (59 years old, married and minimal ties) so our needs are slightly different to yours. We speak a little Thai, along with some very basic Vietnamese and Malaysian.

Hi @Pixics, excellent question. This is a yes and no answer. If they are burning in Kalimantan state of Indonesia ( on Borneo ) or on the island of Sumatra then it can be bad anywhere in Malaysia depending on where the wind blows. But without the burning almost all of Malaysia can have very good air quality. Sometimes even on par with Hawaii ;) Many years ago while in the Malaysian State of Sabah, the air was always super clean even though it is close to Kalimantan.

Yes some of these huge palm oil plantation in both Sumatera and Borneo are owned by Malaysian in collaboration with local Indonesian companies. They are the one who's responsible for open burning. In Malaysia they can't do it because of a very strict law against open burning, but when they venture into Indonesia, stuff they can't do in Malaysia, they do it in Indonesia. I'm ashamed of these Malaysian companies who own and operate these huge palm oil plantations in Indonesia. I hope Malaysian government can punish all these Malaysian companies who are responsible for open burning in Indonesia and exporting haze to Malaysia.
