It isn't about Slovakian specifically. Many kids born in Western countries or who came there really young are struggling to keep their mother tongue intact because they learn English or French as almost a second mother tongue! That results in having an accent and being shy while speaking it because those kids know how bad they speak it compared to the natives...You would say "but it's alright, just practice it, who cares?"...for those adults like David, they don't wanna look like a little kid who's learning the alphabet for the first time.
Maybe he can’t speak it well tbh because that’s how I am with Spanish. My family speaks to me in Spanish 70% of the time so I can’t understand it but my Spanish sucks so bad. So I’m always embarrassed to speak it because I sound like a no sabo kid..
He’s embarrassed bc he probably feels like he doesn’t speak it well. My bother gets nervous speaking Spanish around our relatives bc he thinks he has a thick accent when he speaks it and he forgets words sometimes and gets stuck. But nothing improves language more than practicing it!
@@kolovnika4309 many kids have no accent in their native language even when they arrive as babies or were born in the US because their parents speak that language to them and they ask the kids to speak that language at home. Maybe David has an accent because his parents didn’t mind him answering them back in english so he never really had to speak Slovakian. I think if the parent would have required to speak only their language at home, he would not have an accent. Just look at Spanish speaking households. They usually speak Spanish at home so kids who were born in the US from those families never have an accent in Spanish or English (except certain areas where the accent is prominent)
@@GossipGirl770 Yea I totally agree with you but you cannot blame the parents for that. You never know what they've been through (speaking their mother tongue with their kids maybe wasn't their priority) and also their age is a factor. If someone's parent came here quite old when they were little, of course their parent will always speak in their mother tongue with them..younger parents tend to speak more in English or French with their kids...I noticed that a lot. It isn't a shame for those people to not speak their mother tongue as well as their parents or other natives. It's alright in my opinion.
I know he doesn’t like speaking Slovak but he shouldn’t be embarrassed to speak his native tongue. It’s apart of him. I feel like so many people once they move to the US from Europe want to get rid of their native language.
I'm not sure what his situation is. However many people feel like they have to stop talking their native language, especially if they're children. Even myself I was born in the US but my parents only spoke spanish, and I was made fun of for my accent, and poor English growing up until like 3rd grade. I cannot imagine how it must feel to already leave your home country and then be made fun of for speaking your native language. Must be awful. It's also not just children, adults are also looked down upon if you hear a different accent, regardless of how well their english is. Just my two cents:)
@@arianah8842 I can see this. Same I was born in the US and my parents spoke Spanish to me. I don’t remember having an accent tho. So, I can’t relate to your experience of getting made fun of. I think it’s more they want to Americanize themselves like back then when Europeans would come over to the US they would change their last names and stop speaking their native tongue (German, Russian, Slovak). For me it’s important for me to speak Spanish and practice it to teach my future children and teach them where there blood comes from.

Idk I’m not the kid of a European immigrant.
For me I suck at my national language and I’m not embarrassed to speak it, I just CANT speak it very well. I’ve moved all around and just came back to my country and I still don’t speak it. So maybe he isn’t very comfortable speaking it and it doesn’t come as naturally as English
