This Is How I Thank the Lord- Mosaic MSC cover
Reflecting on Thanksgiving, week 1 of 3.
Pondering the question “How do I be more thankful?”
As we enter into the thanksgiving season, I pray that we might not look past these simple questions.
What does it mean to be thankful?
Does it mean writing a list of things that the Lord has done? Does it mean sitting around the dinner table conversating about all that we have?
How do we walk in thanksgiving, instead of simply pausing to “be” thankful. One is a momentary practice, one is a God-glorifying posture of obedience.
This song helps, I think.
The Psalms help remind us that the Lord deserves unending praise (look up Psalm 145 for one example).
The Lord Deserves our every praise. Christians have heard this phrase a lot, but what does it mean to lift up “every praise”.
The Lord is present in our work, in our home, in our activities, and He can be praised in all of it. But how often during the day are we thinking “Thank you Jesus. I praise you Lord.” Yes, we can stand and sing in church, and that is praise. But, we can also notice the new mercies in the morning, the sustaining grace of God at our jobs, the beautiful sacrificial love in our marriages and respond in thanksgiving; “Thank you Jesus. I praise you Lord.”
But why can/should we constantly praise? Because of Christ’s work in our lives.
Because of Jesus, and the testimony of the gospel in our lives, we have been forever changed. God demonstrated his own love us in that while I was still a complete wandering, spiritually-dead sinner, Christ chose to go to the cross for me.
This song says that amidst all our deceptions and duplicity, we have no record of wrongs in the eyes of our Father. We can approach the throne of grace only because of Jesus. Because of this we respond with praise.
So, how do we be more thankful? We respond to the gospel more. We acknowledges God’s glory more. We sit in wonder of Christ’s resurrection power more.
We let that transform our lives.
