    It’s worth remembering that Artisan is artist grade and DR Georgian is student grade. That’s why your Artisan is thicker - it has less fillers and more pigment of higher quality.

      Yes, good point.

      Thanks for watching Kyomii. As the water mixable oils are a very new concept I wasn't sure of the definition. Daler clearly say they are a student quality, however there is no clear labelling on the Artisan. The binders are going to be very different to the conventional oil binders because of the "emulsion" that makes them water mixable. I still would say I much prefer the Georgian and there is certainly plenty of pigment in them even if they are classed as student. Thanks for your feedback 🙂🎨

      Cally Lawson Hi Cally, all water mixable oils are exactly the same as traditional oils except for an additive (not a binder) that is used to make them water mixable. You can buy a similar additive on the retail market and add it to any traditional oil paint to make them water mixable if you wish. It’s called “medium W” and is made by Schmincke. Artisan are artist grade and will probably have better lightfast ratings, and most definitely better pigments and less binders. Student vs artist grade is personal choice, for me it’s a no brainer because I want all my work to be as archival as possible for personal reasons.

    • @CallyLawson
      @CallyLawson  6 років тому +5

      Thanks for the info Kyomii. Of course the paint you work with is very much a personal preference. How archival a paint is, as you know different for each colour and depends on the type of pigment not the quantity used. I.e. the same pigment in student quality if it has the same type of pigment can be as archival but you may need to build up more layers for the same depth of colour. Many Artists use a mix of brands and quality types in order to find the colour palette that works best for them. As far a how archival a paint is, you need to check each colour individually.

    Thank you so much for doing this. I just started trying out the W&N Artisan brand. I was an oil painter and decided to try water soluble. Figured W*N was a good brand. I have been sooooo disappointed in them. For the very reasons you discovered. I will buy a set of the Georgian ones to try because i also have asthma. Thank you so much again!!! Phyllis

    Im painting with Georgian, they are very good paints. Very good pigmentation, mixes well, very pleasure consistence. I use just a little
    bitt artisan tinner to block in and medium to do the paint fatter in the next leyers. I have some Artisans, pigmentation is the same in tests. So Im prefer georgian, good paint for very good price.

    • @CallyLawson
      @CallyLawson  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching. The main purpose of them being water soluble is being able to rinse your brushes without using solvents. You can use mediums like linseed oil with them if you like. It's really nice not having the smell of the solvents. Just keep in mind that if you use too much water the colours will be diluted and not as vibrant. Stick to thick layers over thin layers to avoid cracking. Enjoy your new paints 🙂

    I just painted a portrait using these georgian WMO. Of course, I am still wondering, if I had used traditional oils (especially some of the nicer brands, including winsor and newton) how different the painting would look... I was surpised to hear that in this video you approved these paints, as I would've automatically assumed that Winsor and Newton would be a more quality brand.

    Oh wow, I didn't know DR did these, I bought the Artisans when they first came out, but didn't like them very much (issues with clogginess being one of the problems), so I use normal oils, without solvents (I just clean with linseed oil and washing up liquid, a slower process, but does the trick). Hi Andre, thanks for watching. They are quite similar. However, I would say that the Georgian is slightly more matt. Neither are too glossy without the addition of linseed oil, which gives a nice gloss. If you prefer a satin or matt finish I would recommend a varnish, I use a matt spray varnish.

    I'm very new to all of this, but was a bit freaked out when I read tonight that Daler Rowney Simply paint flakes off after 6 months...is that true??....and, hopefully the Georgian does not flake? Also a quick question, Is there a bit of paint snobbery out there?

    • @CallyLawson
      @CallyLawson  3 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for watching. I have paintings from much longer than 6 months ago using the Georgian and it has not flaked at all. I always varnish my paintings. Yes, I definitely think there is some snobbery and some ingrained ideas that go back centuries and haven't taken into account new technologies and developments.

    can one work at the same time with watermixable oil color and normal oil color ?

    • @CallyLawson
      @CallyLawson  5 років тому

      Hi Else, thanks for watching. Yes, you can use them together. If you use a small amount of traditional oils, you can even still wash your brushes in water. However if you use a higher ratio of traditional oils to water mixable oils, you will need to clean your brushes with solvents. If you are switching from traditional to water mixable, a good way to use them up is to mix in a just small amount each time.

    • @CallyLawson
      @CallyLawson  3 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for watching. Do you mean a glaze of another colour? Or are you referring to varnishes? In either case, the same techniques apply as with traditional oils. Remember the thick over thin rule to avoid cracking. Like all oils you must wait several weeks or more to make sure they dry before applying a varnish.

    I recently bought some oil paints and i’m brand new to this medium, I find the oil paints to be very thick and very hard to blend , would you recommend any thinners if there is ? or would it be better for me to just buy some better quality oil paints.

    • @CallyLawson
      @CallyLawson  4 роки тому

      Hi Orla, thanks for watching. It is difficult for me to answer without knowing the brand and just how thick they are. There are a variety of mediums that you can add to oils. Some make them more workable, some make them quicker drying etc. I would suggest using a simple white spirit brush cleaning thinner and having a play with that and see how it goes. Linseed oil is also nice, however it increases the drying time a lot! Different manufacturers have their own ranges of media to work with their oil paints, so it would be worth googling the brand you have, to see what is reccomended. I hope that helps.

      Thanks for watching Fabrizio. Yes I agree, maybe it has (although the Daler appears to be well pigmented too) and it is good to have a thick paint and nice to work with a palette knife. It's not really the thickness that I don't like with the Artisan, more that it's very clingy and sticky and requires working more when mixing.
