I am SO happy I came across your video! I had cleaned the carb, checked everything, and thought I had gotten the Magneto cleaned from the surface. Nope, pulled it and the center contact had rust on it. Cleaned reassembled and it fired right up! Not bad for an old lady! THANK YOU!!!
I have a Honda mower and I love it! I clean the spark plug at the beginning of the season, check / replace the air filter and clean the mower after each cut. After about 15 + years it’s still going strong. No issues with it so far.
Newer Honda lawnmowers, use an auto choke system. If the engine does not start while cold, but it starts well when hot, the thermowax cartridge, located in a hole on the side of the cylinder in line with the choke linkage may have failed. If the cold engine starts and stays running using carb cleaner when you spray a shot into the carburetor to prime it, you will know that this wax cartridge has failed and needs to be replaced. It is a "thermowax" 16620-Z8D-305 part from Honda. A good thermowax will have the little probe retracted when it is cold. Conversely, a failed thermowax will have the probe stuck extended while cold, holding the choke butterfly open. So the engine is starved for fuel when cold. The probe in the thermowax moves the choke butterfly open when hot and closed when cold.
Good point, George. Problem with mine staring cold was the thermo wax cartridge. Replaced and now starts first pull. Damn things are expensive, $30.00 on Amazon for a genuine Honda part.
I saw a video of a guy getting a manual choke system and by passing using the thermal wax mechanism. I’m thinking of doing this to my Honda tired of it failing at least 3-4 times a year.
You make the latter steps (putting the parts back together), much easier than it really is. For most people, this is NOT a one person job and if one does NOT have a lot of patience, send it to someone who does.
Thanks for very helpful video. I got my honda mower back from repair shop three weeks ago. They did a tune up and rebuilt carb. The first time I tried to start it, took 8 pulls. Week later.6, then next week would not start. Watched your video and checked for spark. No spark, so pulled coil off and cleaned rust off contacts. It started with one pull.
This video was very helpful. Thank you. My lawnmower sat for a year. Went to use it and wouldn't start. Followed step by step and now it's working. Thank you for this video.
Thanks so much for this. I applied it to a Honda GVX160 and it was more or less the same. The carb was completely filled with gunk. After cleaning as you suggested it started pretty much on the third pull. Couldn’t believe my ears. It had been standing for 5 years. You provide an amazing service!
Another thing those Honda engines are good for after they've been sitting awhile is no compression. Then you have to pull the valve cover and remove the intake rocker and unstick the stuck intake valve and it'll have compression again.
This is Definitely one of the most informative videos on UA-cam!!! You definitely help out. I missed one step and it makes sense why it has stopped working. Thank you! When I'm done I'm going to let you again only if it worked and if not I have a much bigger problem than I thought!! But thanks mydude seriously
Thanks for this video! Mine was backfiring after running great all summer. I followed all of these steps and runs like a champ again. Appreciate you taking time to make this video.
Backfire is when the engine fires back up the intake, after fire is when the engine fires through the exhaust. This can be caused by improper valve timing or a rich or lean mixture
Impressive I have gotten up to air filter, new gas & spark plug so now I am going to prime it. After that I'm looking for a Mechanic if it don't start.
This is the most common sense method for troubleshooting any small engine with no start problems. If I didn't know this already I'd be subscribing. Hey CM I've been wanting to explain to UA-camrs exactly the process you demonstrated how to troubleshoot this Honda. I'm scratching this off my bucket list because you beat me to the punch and its essentially Mission Accomplished. Thanks for putting this up.
The only thing I should have left in was to check compression! But I’m at the point where I can usually feel burnt rings when I pull the pull chord. Thank you!!!
This was excellent. Pretty much everything i did apart from clean the carb jet. UPDATE. Cleaned out the jets and it purrs like a kitten.... Honda engines are pure genius
I have one of those. So far I have replaced all the wheels, both rear wheel adjusters, the carburetor, all the cables except the throttle cable, and now the transmission and axle. I hope this thing is worth the effort. The front wheels are supposed to lock up but the cables were frozen. It was $66 just to replace them. I only paid $35 so I pray it doesn't need anything else. The transmission cost me $145. I normally just part them out but committed myself to repairing this on . I have another with a badly bent crankshaft that I plan on replacing. Honda mowers are over complicated for what they are. Those drive shafts are trouble. Every one I got refused to go backwards. Usually it's rust on the axle. Honda needs to get its act together.
Thanks for such a great video. I've had to buy a couple of new gaskets for mine. Should I use a gasket adhesive to keep them in place when reassembling?
had a honda power washer, same thing, but could not find anyone around here who knew how to fix it, one guy tried, it came back leaking gasoline, thanks for the video
Excellent video. I've been watching a ton of these and this one is the best I've seen. My problem is that even after following all the steps - even replacing the carb with a new one - my mower still won't start. Mower sputtered and died while mowing and haven't been able to start it since.
NEVER let a Roach live! Grrr good job. This was nice. I have the honda Honda Model 12A-986Q795 and got it used for $75 a month ago. Worked great when i tested it out and worked great an hour later at our house. That's when i noticed there is no Primmer Bulb at all and that is kinda important. Hoping the one at Lowes for $6.29 will suffice! Not sure if thats all it will need but the filter is pretty nasty too. Wish us luck, our yard is gross.
Just so you know, to start these Honda mowers with the flywheel brake, you have to engage the blade when pulling on the rope. I noticed that at 1:08, the blade was not engaged when trying to start the engine. Sure, the blocked carb and choke mechanism not working would've prevented it from starting, but not engaging the blade will also not start the engine either.
To clean the jets and air passages, you need to remove them and clean them manually with small wire or carb brushes. Then spray everything thoroughly with carb cleaner. An ultrasonic cleaner works great with carbs if you have one.
Great video, Thanks. However, My issue is a little bit different. Just went to start my 25 year old Honda 214 model ( I believe) Had started it every year, and ran for about 15 minutes. However, for the past 2 did not. Brought out yesterday to start and service, and starter cord would not pull at all. Tried moving blade underneath, but remembered there is a blade brake/clutch or similar devise in place. Just trying to free piston. Note mower always kept in air conditioned/heated garage, never out in elements. Also, always ran carb dry . Any suggestions to free motor would be great. When it ran, it was just fine. Thanks Robert TN
Sometimes when lawnmower hit something hard get stuck and won't pull the cord or kick back the handle cord front the hands and blades not moving or hard to move with the hands. You can try moving the blades move the blades with a long wood and if you thing is a divice or cluth stopping the blades you can try put the handles in running position but be careful this is only to check if the blades move a little to free the piston.,
Thanks so much for the response. Stupid on my part. The day before removed blade to sharpen first. Had put blade and attachment Back on improperly. Blade in holder upside down. Raised against deck. Once put back on properly, All good to go. Thanks again Robert TN

Okay. I've tried a service. I replaced the thermo wax on the auto choke. I saw this and tried to clean the spark plate but it wasn't that dirty. I got a spark from the pulled spark plug. I cannot figure it out. Just won't fire. Tried starting fluid as well.

Yes, but every time you stop the lawnmower that break comes in contact with the flywheel and shaves some of the pad off. Over time it seemed these pieces accumulated behind the coil, this the reason for no spark.
I had a failed spark plug which worked perfectly on test and at idle, but the motor stopped when throttle was opened.
