- Many Muslims living in the West have become aware that the ideas of tolerance, individualism, liberal multiculturalism and freedom of religion - all liberal notions - have their limits when it comes to our community. A series of tensions, from depictions of the Messenger (saw) in offensive cartoons and the teaching of sexual practices at odds with our faith in schools, has brought into focus how there remains an incompatibility between the ever-increasing demands of the liberal state and the Muslim community.
To help us understand these tensions, Imam Tom Facchine, an imam and convert to Islam helps us understand the liberal state. He finished his BA in Political Science and was granted the opportunity to study at the Islamic University of Madinah from 2015-2020, where he obtained his BA from the Faculty of Shariah. Imam Tom is the Research Director of Islam and Society at the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research. He is also a resident scholar and imam of Utica Masjid (New York state).

Alhamdulillah, what an excellent episode! Imam Tom hit the nail on the head with his examination of the fundamental flaws of liberalism, uncovering truths that liberals in the comments find uncomfortable. We've all witnessed it. The moment a liberal encounters someone who dares to challenge their worldview, the "tolerance" dissipates. Couldn't agree more with his point about the lack of inclusivity within liberalism. While it claims to champion diversity and fairness, it often shuts down any differing opinions that don't align with its preconceived notions.
yeah, sure. what's up with the condecending tone? the liberal values allowed for you to speak in this manner on this platform. you just don't like the results of some liberties.(abortion being normalised despite it being closer to a tragedy. but again looking at the circumstances in the society, having more mouths to feed is not always that easy) but we are at least in the process of achieving that(a perfect system to benefit all humans) after 2-3 centuries of existing. islam after 1400 years still looks like 7th century Arabia.

To be honest, As a female revert to Islam , I would like to be in a Muslim Country. Salam from Sweden. (ps I do understand its different from me , then a person that have to flee from Muslim countries to save their lives or those of loved once.

Liberalism is a path to overcome suffer, nothing more or less. To get happy in this life. To me it would be wonderful for Muslims beeng liberated. You would be very helpful for the world I guess. Not like the Americans or the Europeans... I bet you would care for your parents and children ❤❤❤ this how I see more than 90 percent of the Muslim and Christians also. The liberating shouldn't be exclusive to rich people to make more money. It should be given to normal and altruistic people for a better planet ❤❤❤

This is the first time for me to this channel & hearing imam Tom makes me sad abt our umma & I wonder why many even thousands of muslims are willing there life & sacrifice death to go to Europe or west as a migrant ... its sore issue in muslim world I knw.
I heard that migrating to another land in order to maintain your religion is kind of a worship.. but unfortunately its the other way round to us muslims as a whole.

To be fair, in the US, there are pockets of high density of Muslims.
For example Dallas TX has seen a huge influx of Muslims and is arguably paving the way for establishing strong Muslim schools in the US.
It´s great that american muslims are increasinly moving to red states. The next thing should be for them to stop voting for democrats, because liberals hate islam, muslims and conservative values. They only like you when you´re an ex-muslim or an Ilhan Omar.

Thank you for this informative discussion! Just a couple comments: (1) Muslims moving to the US solely for dunya reasons has had ripple effects, since their deen was probably not on point to begin with, and (2) some of our kids are leaving Islam because of their negative interactions with Muslims in Islamic schools and in the community. And let me add that (3) many of our community leaders, masjid presidents, board members etc. aren’t doing their job effectively, so we have neglected youth, languishing reverts, disgruntled women and sad kids while those in leadership positions are focused on self-serving projects and embroiled in petty disputes. There are amazing communities, but on the whole we really need to up our game. Because (4) not every Muslim family is in a position to choose their location.

@@michaelmalzahn-tx2zi that’s an idea. But it’s not an option for everyone. The US has a large and growing number of converts/reverts with varying economic resources, family commitments, personal circumstances, etc. Muslim countries are not 100% Islamic either as Imam Tom mentioned. They present other challenges and increasingly some of the same challenges as here in the US. And one thing we still have here that many Muslim countries lack is freedom of religion. We need to build robust communities and institutions here.
I agree with most of your comments but I am not sure why you felt it was necessary to say "some of our kids are leaving Islam because of their negative interactions with Muslims in Islamic schools." Generally speaking I would say that a child's home environment and peers in general are major contributing factors to their spiritual foundation, however, even the Prophet Nuh's son left Islam.
@@saburabdul-salaam2418 I mentioned it because I’ve seen this. I agree the home environment is generally more important, but it depends on the kid and what they go through with peers. Sadly, my own girls experienced more bullying and toxic exclusionary behavior from Muslim kids than from non-Muslim and I’ve seen the same with other family members and children of friends. I also saw this as a teacher in Islamic schools - bullying, racism, cliquishness, and arrogant, judgmental attitudes in different communities in different states over the last 30 years. It breaks my heart. I could get very specific…. If people want to bury their heads in the sand, this stuff will continue to be a factor in people running away from the religion.
@@hoopoe9629 I am very sorry about the bullying that your. daughters have experienced in Islamic schools, I am a co-founder of the Al Ihsan School in Syracuse, New York, it is K-thru eighth grade and has been in existence for over 20 years. I have also taught in Islamic schools in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York City. I have also taught in public schools. Both Islamic schools and public schools have their problems and have good students and bad students. May Allah bless, guide and protect the Muslims.

I made Hijra in 2018 to Indonesia, I don’t regret it at all. Yes Indonesia is hyper secular and makes the red line very clear for Ulema, but I find that there is a higher probability of passing on values and ideas that are pleasing to Allah if I raise my children within a culture that’s traditions are inherently connected to Islam.
Because my children would have grown up around my family who are non Muslims, I made the decision to sacrifice economically with hopes of increasing in Faith. I can say for a surety Allah has made a way for me from means I would never have thought and given me clarity in many of the misconceptions I had due to the many years of absorbing liberal secular ideas. Stepping outside the box, so to say is some time the best way to see what it truly is.
However, I have to say my situation is very different than someone with a good Muslim family living in the Occident. Although, I would not totally throw out the corpus of Hijra (not saying Imam Tom is doing that) from experience I say Hijra is a valid option especially for young Muslim men seeking a spouse.

Thank you for this. JazakAllah a khair. I can tell you at least in my situation in Chicago USA, I can live more of my Islam then in Palestine and not because of the Israeli government, but because of the non-religious pressure of family members and community. So far there is more space here then there for my situation. Allah knows. I would have loved to be born there and stay in the blessed land but this is how it turned out so far.

What he said at 26:00 is the way I had been since childhood prior to Islam. School friends were school friends and my real friends were siblings, cousins and neighbors.
I remember telling my school friends, "I don't have friends, I have acquaintances" with regard to school friends.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and cast enervation (al-wahn) into your hearts. Someone asked: What is wahn (enervation). Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): He replied: *Love of the world and dislike of death*

We are not supposed to value a comfortable dunya over an honorable death defending the truth. If the Right share more of our values but want us dead, then we either assist them in protecting our values and defend ourselves when they try to kill us or we at least stay neutral. We won't face any punishment for being killed. It's actually the exact opposite. Being killed while defending Islam is the highest honor.

This is so needed thank you. I literally just had to stick up for myself in an ABAR training. It was very hard and my colleagues have spent the last two days attacking and isolating me.

@@michaelmalzahn-tx2zi Anti Racist Anti Biased, but it is not what it sounds like. Just like the imam said in this talk, they are not trying to get rid of bias or racism, but rather realign the intolerances. I am a teacher and I was told to take all pictures of and representations of white people out of my class and replace with only brown people and brown stories and brown history. When the trainer was asked if this would exclude the white children in our classes, she said "well some cups need to be filled first". I was told to stop using certain language in the classroom like "line leader" or "challenging work" because that is discrimination, and to begin "educating" any parents who pushed back because their beliefs are wrong.
@@bebrave1622 Yep they are using minorities and established discrimination laws for racial groups to push their agendas and bully parents and the wider society into conforming to their ideology.
The more I interact with the left the more I find them to be the most racist group out there, because they change their tone for darker skinned people and assume that you don't understand basic math and science concepts and live without the internet.
Why else would they explain basic math concepts you learn in middle school to darker skinned students of university/college doing engineering courses? I see the way they talk to my friends who look as white as the Europeans. Then my friends tell them they are Arabs and there is a tone shift and magically the conversation is "simplified". It is as if they met a new person. We started to pay attention to these liberal arts students who pretty much run all the events in the university. When they interact with one of our darker friends they start with the "simplified talk" immediately. I mean you can see a stark difference in the way they talk to you based on your accent and skin tone. Why would we be in these science events after hours if we didn't enjoy and understand science? You can see what this training is teaching them.
They see themselves as the only saviours of the non-whites and must help the non-whites to evolve to the level of the whites. Must be a bias from their evolution theory. it makes people feel stupider and become stupider. They want to keep the minorities as their babies who need their help forever. Makes sense why blacks who grow up in these countries have problems and immigrant do better. There is a system who keep them down and these antiracism groups are the guards who keeping the system in place. They are not fighting against it, they actually made it worse in the last couple of years by completely appearing to be racist against whites but it was to keep the non-whites from escaping from their nets and ideology.
Anyways, there are many agendas they are running at the same time. To turn people into nothing but boxes that can be grouped into special groups and they become their representatives. But when we have our group identity and want to self-represent they argue that we need to be individuals and group thing is primitive. Then when we are alone in their groups and want to uphold our individual rights, they argue that our individual values and beliefs are primitive and we are being divisive and making others uncomfortable.
Conclusion: Only liberals can be the leaders (AKA Masters) and we must be the followers (AKA Slaves). They just put non-white liberal leaders and expect us to follow as if we don't have our own beliefs and values. And of course, liberalism is just an objective fact not a subjective belief system 😅
If you look closely there are vast parts of this country that have large Amish communities that have a lot of authority and control. Many also have a tax free status and thier own schools and institutions. Muslims could take notes.

For all of those who think it is ideal if Muslim women are not financially dependent on men:
Would it be ideal if Muslim men were not sexually dependent on their women? For example, would it be ideal if men could purchase (at low cost) harems of docile life-like forever-young sex robots?
How would you respond to Muslim men who justified this by saying such robots are necessary to give men true independence, such that they are not forced to stay in relationships with women who are rude, jealous, controlling, manipulative, fat, old, or ugly?
How would you respond to Muslim men who said that Muslim women need to "step up their game" such that men choose to be with them instead of a robot that is more friendly, beautiful, young, and thin?
The cop out answer is to say sex robots are haram, but there are other conceivable halal alternatives that would do the same thing: flood men with cheap alternatives. Obviously, such alternatives would weaken and ultimately destroy marriage because it takes away the dependence that men have on women for sex.
But that is literally what giving women financial independence does; it makes them independent from men. And that's why no society or religion ever did give women that independence, except for our current dystopia.
I see a significant issue here that we we can drive a truck through.
No one is asking any Muslim to become gay or transgender all that is being asked to you cling to your faith and let those that are transgender enjoy what they like.
Where is the issue in that?
I am Buddhist, I believe Muslims can be liberal and Muslims you are our friends. We are not like Hindus. We respect your faith and rules. For the engaged Buddhism iou are aloud to practice meditation as long as you respect us.
Wonderful discussion. The issue of raising Muslim kids is a little more nuanced so I disagree a bit with the Imam on the reality of Muslim lived experiences. Some of what he says is true but there are also pockets of rather large and active communities in the US where parents don’t have such stark choices. For example in the DC region and outer suburban communities there’s a strong Muslim presence where parents have access to good jobs, good schools, but also where we have built strong centers of religion. These are some of the wealthiest communities in the nation and you’ll see plenty of Muslim kids in public schools who also have access to religious schools and education. We need to build critical mass in more communities. How else will we attract more people to our deen if we’re so insular?
The problem is that you shouldn't rise your children at all religiously. They are children. They don't understand the concept of religion.

asalaam alaikum, thank you again for these discussions, however, I must state clearly again that Allah is not a deity - a deity implies an idol of worship, hence to consider Allah a deity would be to approach idolatry. I can understand why a former Christian would make this statement, but it's not a correct understanding of Allah - it is clearly stated in the Qur'an that Allah is creation, hence why, again, in the Qur'an, it is stated that Allah does not and will not explain all of creation to us and how the cosmos came to be etc (I am building off what is stated in al-Kahf), because that would require us to be able to see into other dimensions of reality, which we humans are incapable of -- we can make models and assumptions, but we will never witness an alternate dimension beyond the 3rd/4th dimensional time-space. Allah is the cosmos/creation itself, not a Zeus-like figure given to us through Judeo-Christian beliefs. This understanding in no way invalidates morality or afterlife -- I am not allowed to kill anyone I please, for example, unless of course my life is threatened by them attacking me under conditions of oppression. I can submit to ensuring paradise in this life for those that follow after me (who will remember you in an act of embodied afterlife, hence the significance of martyrs), for a less provocative example, and indeed, when we ascend in this life or pass on, as some would say, we are not separate from the cosmos, since we are made from the cosmos. We do not say that someone buried is separate from the Earth, for example, that would make no sense, and even if someone were to be cremated, their ashes are not separate from the cosmos or the Earth either. One lives on by returning to the cosmos, if you like, in a way that is beyond the material human body -- we contribute to the soil, for example, or air and so forth. As Allah made us, we may die as an individual, but are still part of Allah's creation after that individual death.

Wait a moment. Unless the hosting nation is secular and liberal, one cannot practise Islam or Judaism, or the rest. If a Muslim finds the environment antagonistic toward him, he has to move to Saudi Arabia or Iran to live completely dictated by the Islam belief. Why is it that some Muslims aspire to migrate to non-Muslim countries from those Muslim countries? Why does it matter where to practise one's belief? Incomprehensible. Conservative Muslims may have to buy an uninhabited island to start a caliphate, if practical.
