  • In an era where romantic dramas have become a rare gem amid the saturation of IP-driven franchises and action-packed blockbusters, films like Lonely Planet remind us there are still powerfully heartfelt stories out there. This Netflix feature, written and directed by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and starring Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth, stands out as more than just another love story on streaming. It might seem like The Idea of You or A Family Affair on the surface, but Lonely Planet delves deeper into the heart of its characters, offering a rich, nuanced portrayal of romance that feels both timeless and relevant. At the heart of the film lies the undeniable chemistry between its leads, who open up to Collider about their characters’ vulnerabilities and the powerful bond they forged while filming in the remote landscapes of Morocco.
As a film about the transformational power of travel and how journeying outside your usual life can make you see yourself in a new light, the film relies heavily on the engaging and convincing dynamic between Dern and Hemsworth. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of that connection. While in conversation with the two for the film, now on Netflix, it’s fun to see the pair’s undeniable chemistry on and off-screen. Their playful banter, as seen with their affectionate names for each other - “Dernsy” and “Hemsy” - highlights their relationship that extends beyond their roles and adds a sincerity that translates seamlessly into their characters’ complex love story. However, outside creating palpable chemistry that will excite audiences, their journeys and vulnerabilities as actors added layers to the film.

A light May /September romance with the setting as the most charming character and element. There is little chemistry between auntie Laura and nephew Liam, so when he turns to her for comfort it's kinda ick imo.
Indeed, the sultry Adriano Giannini would have been a better match for Laura and lent a spark to their union. But alas, the message was about growth and chaos and being vulnerable to safety and....elusive love. Something about Dern's small mouth and chin combo makes her seem more harsh than her character reveals. It doesnt add up to romance despite Liam's obvious charms and protective masculinity.
He is natural, vulnerable and convincing here but the attraction to Dern is never believably established because they have very little in common except for their mutual, forgettable breakups with uninteresting partners.

Good movie for sure. I don't know I could support Laura and Liam in a real life relationship. Laura has had her time to create a family and have children. I worry for someone like Liam dating a much older woman where he can not have or create a family as he may have been destined to do. This won't be a popular post but I have seen it so many times where the relationship does not last and the man looks back at the loss of his life when he should have been going through his life and having experiences that never happen because of loss of the years that they should have occurred. I am not good at the explanation, but I have seen the aftermath all too often of these relationships. Woman can't have children once they get to a certain age... men can have children until the day they die. There is a difference and obviously, I am an old person with old fashion archaic ideas. They are both adults... I just hope that no one regrets anything when the years slide by.

Same thing with young women when they are with much older men, they always complain for having a bossy controlling partner and that they lose their youth and true self being so dependent and controlled by him that in the end they get divorced especially when he starts getting sick. Men have shorter lifespan. A friend wants to get out of her relationship cause her partner who is 20 years older got sick and she has to change his diaper with him being bossy and controlling her every move. Let’s be honest, guys who like younger girls they like them young, stay young, naive and obedient. Some of us who liked older guys have had this experience in our lives. But we know older guys who prefer young women are completely different from older guys that prefer a partner their age.

When Liam laughs he sometimes makes me think of Elon Musk. Their laugh is very similar. Crazy 🤪 right?
