  • Carrots are extremely rewarding to harvest once you can get them to grow successfully. I grew carrots from seed to harvest and was rewarded with a great carrot garden haul!

    What is everyone growing this Spring/Summer? Have any of you tried to grow carrots and how was that experience?

      I over seed my carrot beds. When they get about a half inch around, then I thin them for delicious baby carrots. I let the next batch grow to 3/4 inch around and thin again. I let the rest grow to full size.

      @GreyManPrepping  Місяць тому +2

      @joyceterra2265 that's actually a great idea, Joyce less waist. We just thinned them out and used the tops for pesto, I didn't think about baby carrots.

      @@GreyManPrepping I didnt think about making pesto with them. I usually use basil. Do you make it the same. If not, would love the recipe.

      Hello Joyce, 👋 😁 I'll be honest the recipe we used is from "Simply Recipes." it uses baby spinach,garlic,cashews, sea salt, black pepper, and extra virgin olive oil. I'll share the link here, and you can check it out and let me know your thoughts. 😊

      @@GreyManPrepping this sounds delicious. Will definitely be giving this a try. Thank you for sharing. I hate letting anything go waste and live learning new ways to use things that typically I would throw to the chickens and ducks. They will still get some because they are so good for them.

    I started 6 new Bell pepper plants from seed and, 2 days ago, something ate one of the plants right down to the soil. Had to move the other 5 into the pool enclosure, where they're doing great. If it isn't the critters, it's bugs. 😬 I have so much to learn about growing.
    Have you ever watched 'The Ripe Tomato Farms' channel? Looks interesting. Blessings.😀

    Congrats on the great carrot harvest! I have feral cats so I'm redoing my whole garden to cage them out. No summer garden this year however I'll be ready for fall/winter/spring here in the low desert Arizona. I do have eggplants in containers as well as bunch onions, chives, asparagus and baby moringa I started from seed. My sweet potatoes & rosemary are growing crazy and my citrus trees are coming along(grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime) as well as my Pakistani mulberry, guava and banana trees. Grapevines are fairly new however I'll get grapes off one this year. I also have 2 trees I call my survival trees, Palo Verde- edible green pods when young and usable wood and Mesquite which the pods when dry can be used for a flour substitue(good for diabetics) and the wood, well you must know lots of people use for bbqs smokers and cooking with. Native people used these trees for many things also building materials. Good drought resistant trees. I never water them. I really enjoy watching your progress. Much love to fam and a pat on the pups head.

    I grow 50 ft row of carrots each year. I hate washing all those carrots by hand. If you have a top loader washing machine, throw the carrots in there for about 15 minutes, no soap, just water. It cleans them beautifully.

    Hey Grey…a day late. Been busy preparing my summer garden for planting…whew! Got it done. But I can’t plant what I need until after Mother’s Day. I’ve planted as late as up to Memorial Day. And even then, I’ve experienced cold snaps on the holiday and planted after that. So….I’m ready and waiting here in Michigan.

    The carrots looked awesome. Nice job. We grow them every year up here and some years are better than others. I think our best year was 18 pints ,last year was only 8. They’re so much better than store bought though. Still waiting on last frost right now but potato’s will be going soon. Stay safe down there brother and keep on growing 👍👍

    Peppers. The cross pollination will only effect the seeds, not your harvest this year. For strong growth of peppers, I use a general liquid fertilizer a couple times until about halfway through the season, when the plants reach full size. Then I switch to Alaska Morbloom 0-10-10 fertilizer to focus on flowers and not leaf growth. Peppers are about the only plant I use liquid fertilizer on and I plant like 20 veggies.
    Your garden looks good. Carrots look amazing. Mine always end up stubby, not so good.

    Why is the soil level so low in your beds?

    • @GreyManPrepping
      @GreyManPrepping  Місяць тому +2

      Over 18 inches per bed, but several reasons one is to use a wind break for smaller plants, second room for my mulch/straw, and when I need to utilize moundimg on certain plant's.
