- Louis Gossett Jr. has died. The Academy Award-winning actor rose to fame as the role of Fiddler in the popular 1977 miniseries, ‘Roots.’ He was best known for his role as Emil Foley in the critically-acclaimed drama, ‘An Officer and a Gentleman.’ He was 87.

His role as GySgt Foley in "An officer and a Gentleman" is one of the best portrayals of a Marine Corps DI. Right up there with R. Lee Ermy and Jack Webb.
I still remember watching Enemy Mine with my grandpa and seeing silent tears fall from his eyes. That helped me understand racism at a very early age and helped me overcome it, we are all one, even if we are shattered.
What an actor. All of the legends of my childhood are leaving here.

@@beulahokonkwo The industry as a whole. After his role in An Officer and a Gentleman, he stated he was not getting ANY call backs for any of the roles he auditioned for. You would think Hollywood would have been beating down his door, but that did not happen. Even with those awards, his talent was horrifically underutilized. I am glad they got him for the remake of The Color Purple, but I wish his role had been bigger.

The odd thing about His passing was I didn’t know he passed away. I had the movie “The Principle “ in my utube movie save. It came on after I was done watching a movie, I didn’t put it on. My friend came in the room and told me He passed away. It was so weird because of that movie starting with him in it and he just passed away. Such a Brilliant Actor! RIP sir. I remember watching Iron Eagle as a kid with my mother and almost tearing up when I thought his character had died in the movie. But that was only one of many. So many roles and always so well done. Mr. Gossett just had that style. And from the interviews you can see & hear a good man giving life lessons.

I met Lou Gossett, Jr., here in Atlanta, when he was 83 years old. At my job. He actually spoke to me first. He had just come from the doctor's office. We had a great conversation.
I am truly saddened by or loss of a ne in a lifetime iconic actor Lou Gossett, Jr. It broke my heart ❤️; and for the sake of me, I can't stop crying! I really, really loved this actor! It hurtsme so badly! I've always dreamed of meeting his acquaintance some day! Now, my realization; it was not meant to be. I will miss him, tremendously! I admired him to no end! I will never forget meeting him when he came to Detroit years ago at Downtown Hudson Dept Store where he did a meet & greet to promote a line of African jewelry. I stood in line for a long time (late returning from lunch) to greet him (purchased a necklace), and he took my hand & kissed it (thought I was going to pee my pants)!
He asked my name, but I was so overwhelmed I could barely speak & my co-worker answered for me. She later interviewed him. I returned to work & swore never to wash my right hand for the rest of my life❤
