Today I thought it would be fun to teach you guys one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands.
Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead has this dark and ominous vibe about it propelled by a haunting yet challenging arpeggiated picking pattern throughout.
The whole song is based around just three chords (Am, Em & C), but with the added melody lines and quick arpeggiated picking pattern it sounds much more complex than that.
The nice thing about this Street Spirit (Fade Out) guitar lesson is that the picking pattern that we will be learning stays the exact same throughout the entire song.
As soon as you get it down it is simply a process of repeating the pattern over and over again around those three chords I mentioned earlier.
I think this is one of those songs that sounds great even without the vocals. It really is a very beautiful guitar part when played on its own.
Be sure to pay attention to the picking indications for the picking pattern that I demonstrate at the beginning of the lesson.
Remember, the idea with this style of picking is to always be picking in the direction of the next string that you are going to be playing. This will make everything much easier to play in the long run than if you just decided to alternate pick the entire thing.
Hope you guys enjoy this beautiful yet challenging Radiohead lesson!
Carl...
I have to tell you this ... after watching so many lessons, I've learned only how to play it only from your Video, thanks a lot
Same
MORE RADIOHEAD!!!!!!
i learned it in half an hour i think it 's quite simple the hard part is the string skipping and to stay in tempo but it's not that hard and it so beautiful! Anyway thank you for showing it and keep up with the good work ! ;)
For me this is really hard. Playing this for 5 min straight, wih no chance, flawlessly is no joke
@@nesfan8 Yeah, the pattern and chords are pretty basic but keeping it going for the whole song is quite a challenge, especially when you factor in that Thom actually sings at the same time.
I pick it up in 5mins and then starting singing. Its so easy. I probably sound better then the original. I could keep it going all day. Amateurs the lot of ya

Thanks a lot man, that was super helpful. Breaking down the picking pattern to the degree that you did made this a lot easier to learn. And the multiple camera angles were definitely appreciated.

Yamaha_Supermofo think that's right lol... hope it helps any beginners
Yamaha_Supermofo Cool! I find tab very helpful, thanks! For finger picking, I use P = Pulgar/thumb, I = Index, M = Middle, A = Anular/ring finger.
P P A I M I A I M I A I P I (x2) on the Am, Em and C using the fingers accordingly...
THANKS!
i’m verrryyyy new to guitar. i understand what the u and d’s mean as you stated it, but what are the numbers? is it the order?
@@nyessah8687 idk if you have gotten it already but the numbers mean the frets you will press down on the guitar, the order is just from the left to the right, just as you read this comment its not from right to left or anything like that lol
Thank you! Love the way you explain succinctly.
It’s a mind thing with me, when I think about patterns like this and try and follow the correct direction of pick, I usually mess them up.
Your pick directions are spot on. So I’m going to keep at this one because it’s a beautiful AND predictable pattern and chord structure. I hope it will help me alter my brain to multi task naturally!!!
If you ever get to give an instructional on the outro, that’d be great. The most difficult part for me to get smoothly is fitting in the penultimate G#.
🙂
This is a brilliant lesson, had so much fun with this. Thank you so much..
gracias !!!!!! no puedo creer que estoy tocando esta cancion , ya casi saleee
Siono 😀
prolly my fav song of all time
I've been playing guitar for 4 years now and I still can't get this song. Radiohead is my favorite band and this just kills my self esteem
You will get it Wilma. I've only been playing for 1 week and I'm getting there slowly. Just persevere with it x
I learned the up down strokes my own way. Starting from 5th string try down 5th, down 4th, down 1st, up 3rd, down 2nd, up 3rd, down 1st, up 3rd, down 2nd, up 3rd, down 1st, up 3rd, down 2nd, up 3rd, up 4th, down 3rd.
On the 2nd loop after ending down 3rd go up 5th, down 4th at the beginning.
This worked easier for me as it seems not all minds are alike and just play which way works best for you
@@tinman8753 thank u legend
Excellent. Thanks.
You should do a tutorial for High and Dry, that is a great song and these are great tutorials
Great video, thanks dude
вот спасибо! наконец-то нашла правильный разбор
thanxxxxxx!
Great lesson sounds fantastic ✌️
your lessons are very helpful, thanks a lot brother.. :)
-exactly- what I needed thank you!!!
Evrothing is clear now! Thanks a lot! 🖤
Perfect lesson, thank you!
You did an amazing job on this song. Anyway you would be able to do a lesson for I MIGHT BE WRONG by the great RADIOHEAD.
Please and thank you for all the awesome work you do.
It was so understandable. Great job
great video, thanks a lot !
Merci! Très bon Tuto!!!
great tutorial , thanks!
What a great-minimalist song.
Fantastic, thank you
hi..big fan of yours...could you please provide a lesson for Airbag by Radiohead..ll really appreciate it.. thanks !
Nice one! 👌🏻
Thanks for the video.
thank you, very helpful
You deserve more views. Unlike Marty, he rarely teaches the whole song, unless it's a simple one.
Buyinos Marty explains the song better then anyone else. He's great for beginners not so much intermediate
this guy doesnt even teach the wole song. not thhe best example for your theory
Is picking direction important for a song like this?
Very very very good
Thanks to Marty, i learned to play guitar. I owe him my whole basis. He taught me my first songs wich motivated me to keep on playing.
Perfect lesson.-
If you have a chromatic tuner that changes Hz to tune, I think I figured it out about 429 HZ to match the cd. I tuned to the song, then figured out the tuning. Its been awhile since I played it but I think its 429 HZ instead of 440. Hope this helps. If not or any suggestions Ill re try it when Its not late
Ron Jeremy It should be 432Hz, the Scientific Pitch
@@manuwoland that's a myth
Thank from France, j'adore this song 🙂
You are the best mate. Thank you so much ☺️ and
Great lesson..
If you're having trouble learning the pattern, count how many times he picks the strings in one sequence. Figure out the pattern and keep practicing
Thanks from Brazil 🇧🇷
Perfection
Thanks I can finally play it
Thanks!!!!!!
bravo grazie!
Great lesson, just need to work on picking speed! thank you
1 week into guitar and you have helped me greatly so far (Fake Plastic Trees, No Surprises) and now I'm confident with some time and patience i can nail this little beauty. Thanks pal
where's the G part?
Found it a lot easier to use finger picking (P.I.) than using picks.
Im fairly new to guitar and have a terrible habit of learning the first minute of a song then moving onto something else 🤣 I hope this doesn’t create bad habits for me in the future with regards to actually becoming skilled or does everyone tend to do this when they start out?
same here
Another GREAT lesson from my favorite Guitar Teacher. Even when songs are above my ability I still download them for future reference. One day soon ( I hope). I am going to make a good contribution and become a Premium member of your site. Again Thanks for all you do, William T Branch
hey, how you getting on with guitar?
@@lavostoe1120 Not good. After I posted my comment my wife of 30 years died. I could not bring myself to play for a long time. Now I am trying but my enthusiasm is not the same.
nursetom61 i’m so fucking sorry mate. i hope you’re keeping okay.
@@lavostoe1120 Thanks, I"m hanging in there. August will be 4 years. It is getting a little easier and I am playing a little bit. I do not think I will ever have the drive to play I had before. But who knows what the future holds. Stay strong during this pandemic. I am in the USA. Hopefully wherever you are it is getting better.
@@nursetom61 how you holding up?
Every video i find of this shows a different way of doing this... Makes it so much harder as a beginner :(
one of my favorites of them, pure emotion. I did a cover of this song, where i played all instruments (i even added violin) by myself, so i would really be happy when you could take a look, and perhaps say what you think. Thanks a lot !
Can we see it?
thank you
Thanks man another great lesson i find this one a total head fuck although its simple its getting the picking spot on right every time. Cheers
Great lesson! But you should have mentioned the G major and E major towards the end of the song. Other than that, great video.
Does it has the same picking pattern for the outro?
normal que salga mas facil con arpegio que con uñeta? Lo mas increible es que Thom Yorke hace todo este arpegio cantando a la vez. Una bestia de musico
Why do the specific up and down picks matter, especially on such a slow and relaxed song? What is the benefit of this technique? And what is this picking-towards-the-next-string technique called?
The chorus first part is space odyssey by bowie
What about the song "Just"? It's a very cool song!
Please do a tutorial for Black Star by Radiohead. I really really want the right strumming and chords. Please :)
Yes! Favorite song from The Bends.
..I'm gonna nail this if it kills me!...thanks for the lesson..Awesome!
did you nail it?
@@A.I.N.A.C.. ..took a few days,but got there!...cheers..
Can't make the E minor part without my fingers partially muting other stings around them. My little finger is struggling to make the 3rd fret on the B string in that chord too. Any advice?
I have a radiohead score sheet in which it indicates two strings are played once in the arpeggio. So I used to play it with figures. Don't know who is right.
How do you stretch your pinkie so far down from the rest of your hand? I'm having a hard time doing that
I must say, all of these peoples profile pictures below sum up the internet rather nicely.
Having a hard time picking with the e minor chord. My pinky isn’t fully hitting the third fret almost as if my hand can’t stretch that far without muting or messing up the sound. Any suggestions on how I can improve that?
I had the same problem but strangely if I used the capo on the first or second fret, I got a much cleaner sound. It changes the key of course but works for me !
@@andrewhilton6130 thanks I’ll have to try it and let you know how it goes
Bold as Love next? ;)
Can someone help me figure out the strumming pattern for later on in the song? I think I've figured out a rough version from slowing down the video but I can't seem to get it just right
Just started learning to play guitar, is it a good idea to jump in with both feet and learn this as my first song?
Why not
How did it go x
@@annabelcranston3618 slowly n I still make the odd mistake when chords change 😂
@@tinman8753 ye I’m learning it and it’s not exactly going perfect
@@annabelcranston3618 Have faith and keep practicing. You will get there x
Immerse your soul in love. Last chorus it goes to.
G E (major)
If you do it whit out a pick, only fingers, the ups and downs comes almost by it self. 🙂 Try it.
i have trouble switching to E minor, like i always have to pause and its not a smooth transition what do i do?
Keep practicing, make sure your fingers are in the correct position before you press down on the frets, and also practice only that transition for a few minutes at a time, not the whole song
Огонь!
What do you do with the index finger and pinky when playing the E minor? Can someone tell me what he is doing with the index finger when playing the E minor? 4:57
Can someone tell me what he is doing with the index finger when playing the E minor? Because there is no index finger involved in that chord but it looks here like he is adding the index finger. In the previous chord (A minor) he lets the index finger go, but here it looks the opposite? 4:57
Hello what gauge strings are u using
great video beside there seems to be no mention of what the tuning is for the song
standard
How do I tune my guitar for this?
Alright, so I got the picking pattern down pretty good, but my struggle is the reach with my pinky. I can manage on the Am, but thumb is way low behind the fretboard. And when going to to Em I'm in trouble. The C is not so much of a problem. Does anyone have some good advice on what to practice to get a better reach with the pinky. Should I just keep having a go at this song, and I will eventually get there - or is there some practice routine I can do that will help me improve faster with the pinky reach?
Just trying this for the first time. I've got pretty thick fingers and I sometimes play Em and Am elsewhere with my middle finger covering 2 strings. For me that makes what seems practically impossible pinky gymnastics here otherwise fairly easy.
Good teacher. You look like Brian O'connor(F&F) with black hair. :P
My handsome teacher 😉
And now the evilish TheDarknessVersion! :-D ...Please!!!
Is this whats called "Economy picking"? I have recently learned "Alternate picking" where you always alternate between an up and a down-stroke. So the picking pattern in this video is really awkward for me 😊
Maybe I should learn both picking patterns. (Economy and alternate picking)
Can you play this song without a pick?
lesson for the lead part ?
Its so hard to sing with it what should i do?
Do the tutorial of just
Does Radiohead play this in a different tuning? It sounds way off playing along with the record. I tried tuning everything down like half a tone but can't get it right. I almost wonder they did something weird in the studio.
I'm a beginner and my picky finger is slow and weak, I'm so frustrated
dude looks just like oz from american pie
1:58 1:58
2:25 3:25
is the original tuned down because this sounds higher
Yes, I tuned it down a quarter(?) step. Sounds like the song. :)
+Aubie DW Quarter step is correct, half and standard is too low and high
Omg all I can say is omg xxx
I think it's easier with fingers
Laconcha es muy difícil
Hard thing I found is up stroke down stroke thing.. I'm a fingerstyle guitarist so it just confused me!!!
Great picking but you missed An important part of the song it would be great if yo could revisit it

Same goes for Pink Floyd's - Is There Anybody Out There?
