It's interesting to see Olan mutate under these circumstances. We know two things in particular trigger the mutation process, near death, and intense emotions. I love Olan, I think the conversation with Brad made him come to terms that he'll never be able to feel closure with his family.
It's really a great scene about empathy. Juxtaposed with Terry's sympathy. The ability to empathize with others let's us let go of our trauma letting us see that we're not the locus of it. Brad can't emphasize because of his addiction and so he has to inflict his pain in an attempt to make it real and "protect innocents" as is all too often the veil that senseless violence is committed under.
@@ozymandiasramesses1773 Would you be willing to get more into what you mean by "inflicting his pain in an attempt to make it real and 'protect innocents'"? In this case, is Brad "inflicting his pain in an attempt to make it real" through his general bloodshed, or through giving Joy to Olan despite his prior attempts to get off it himself?
@@seg162 I was referring to the climax mostly. All i meant was that a joy run restricts his ability to empathize with Olan and gives him joy out of apathetic pragmatism.
Christ this makes Joyful’s secret ending speech hurt more. Spoilers. “I hurt a lot of people. I-- I was forced to hurt them very badly. Some of them I hurt by choice... Even though some of them I thought I was helping. When it comes to people. Including myself. I can't tell who's good or who's bad.” -Brad Brad really thought he was helping Olan there, if only he knew that Olan was as broken of a man as Brad, and couldn’t handle joy’s side effects.
What's scarier is that, compared to Brad, Olan literally had his first experience with Joy in the present. However, he was so torn from losing his family, he mutates far quicker than Brad. Brad had Buddy keeping him going for as long as he did, but Olan, like you said, was already broken (hence his drinking problem). The Joy is said to help those feel better and while it did worked for Brad for awhile, Olan, despite claiming "He's got the joy now", actually spiraled down even further.
Yeah especially the one in Area 3 where if you're unlucky enough to get someone kidnapped by that motorcycle gang, then that party member is dead for good since the leader of that gang mutates into a Joy Mutant and kills them off-screen.

What happens if you go into the bar? I remember the bartender saying Olan was his favorite customer when you enter it at the beginning of the game and talk to him.
The Bartender doesn't seem to have a reaction, but I guess its to be expected since Olan's mutant form didn't go into full "Murderfuck Anything Within Range" mode. either that or the booze just mollified it until it went dormant on the roof.
I didn't get to see this one (thank goodness tbh, Olan is one of my favorites!) And I'm curious: Did you use Joy in this run? I'm wondering if it's tied to that, or if I just got lucky
To view this scene, you must have recruited Olan into your party and have taken Joy at least one-to-two times throughout your playthrough up to that point. The first event will trigger randomly at a campfire - you can tell when a new campfire event is available by the lingering cinders at a campfire. The second event will trigger sometime after the first, with the same indication. Finally, Olan's mutated form can be located at the bar off the area 1 crossroads.
