I heard this sans vocal at a Peter Hook & The Light concert at the Electric Ballroom in Camden Town, London this past Sept 28. It was their lead-in before their four-song Joy Division set followed by the NO albums Technique and Republic.

Ian's unfinished lyrics and vocal delivery is far creepier and it spans almost 10 minutes!

Martin Hannett in creative overdrive production, essentially manufacturing the JD sound. Without him, they'd have gotten nowhere.

At the same time, I can understand why the band wanted to capture their live sound in studio. From the released live recordings out there - either as a bootleg or official, they have a very energetic vibe that the records simply couldn't, didn't, or replicate.

No Love Lost, Leaders of Men, Shadowplay, so many songs were already fully formed before Martin Hannett. I think Hannett dropped the ball on Unknown Pleasures, live versions were mostly better and even demos are better. Insight recorded in Eden Studios was before they recorded Unknown Pleasures. Closer sounds great with Hannett's production.
