  • There are many videos, teaching 'How to speak Dominican Spanish'. I have to admit that all the ones that I’ve seen are very deceitful, because they don’t tell the full story. This is because many people make videos based on what they find on Google or on their own experience.
In this video you have the opportunity to see the other side of the coin.

I really enjoyed the second half of the video where you clarified exactly what you meant. The first half of the video where you listed the “lies” was very confusing because those are all very common things that I hear literally every single day living in DR six months and counting. So I’m glad I watched the video to the end. That being said those things are not lies at all. However...if people try to make it seem like ALL Dominicans speak those ways that would obviously be a lie. When the videos that teach Dominican slang ...or how to speak like a Dominican...are saying this is how Dominicans talk, clearly they are explaining unique features of Spanish that you will hear very often in DR.

I definitely agree with you. People tend to focus on these differences and while they hold truth, they're not everyone's truth; however, the narrative takes on a life of its own and its hard to reel back in.
Reminds me of my own cultures. Some people speak the stereotypical way of the time, some people don't speak that way at all, and duality exists for the others.

A female Dominican teaching Spanish! I love it. You are a rare gem ❤ I’ve been to Santo Domingo many times (going back in a couple of weeks) Many do speak dropping the s’, adding l, etc. I think it’s good to know and have balance of both ways of speaking and understanding Dominican Spanish. Especially if you aren’t on a resort. Great video!

Es un español "machucao" : ) Vaina = crap as used in US English. Take you crap to your room!!! Lleva tu vaina a tu cuarto!!! They DO say "amol" and they write it that way : ). I'd also add that accents and vocab are different from the city to campo and from middle upper class to lower class. "Tu e'ta pasao, hombre!!!" "Como e'ta? E'toy fregao!!!" S is aspirated!!! Buen' Tardes is what I'd say they say. Oye...donde e'ta Tico? Tico e'ta acotao pa'lla tra' American for Dominicans = Washington Heights!!! Ah tu eres de los EU eh? tengo un primo en NYC...Washington Heights...lo conoces? True, there are Dominicans that speak a very educated Spanish...but even those guys will "get Dominican" at times.
Not ALL speak that way...but I have to say that if you are out and about in say El Mercado Modelo, on a guagua, or in a colmado...you're going to hear "Dominican" Spanish. To the point that Dominicans oftens say "Ah gueno...el habla español...pero habla domincano?
Reminds me of when Dominican Yorks learns English and it is all street and slang.
