Very interesting well done video of one of my favorite movies from a favorite memorable time in my life the late 70s to early 80s! I was about 17 when Logan’s Run released which was a wonderful time! It’s interesting how some fashions and hairstyles and looks were influenced by things in movies and vice versa. I remember the first girl I had a serious relationship with shortly after this movie came out I bought her a negligee and panties that looked like the costumes from Logan’s Run which had bright colors and made of shiny shimmering or sparkly materials that were vibrant and sexy and soft to touch. There wouldn't be any reason for men to have a "no underwear" requirement when wearing pants. Many women, even during restrictive times, go to clubs in dresses or skirt without any underwear. Today many Hollywood women are once again prancing around in little outfits with nothing underneath. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie for myself was when Logan was "reviewing" his "entertainment choices" for the evening and another guy got transported in and gave Logan the eye. He chuckles to himself and sends the guy on his way like it was no big deal. It was one of the very few overt homosexual references in 70's genre media that didn't have a tragic outcome for the character. WAY ahead of its time! Interestingly enough I don't think I've ever seen a cut of the film here in the States that excised it even back in 70's & 80's.
I have watched this DVD over and over again just for Jenny Agutter's costumes. Farah Fawcett's appearance in the movie was a bonus. I didn't realize until this video that the citizens' costumes were color coordinated to their age group. Kudos to Bill Thomas.
Jenny Agutter was a dream come true. The Australian film "Walkabout" and "Logan's Run" absolute crush material for guys back in the day. She was feminine perfection.
It made me think of what Jerri Ryan said recently about playing Seven-of-Nine in Star Trek Voyager. She complained about being objectified. Except, she certainly had no issue cashing the checks and even going to Star Trek conventions. And people act like that was the 20th century and things are different now. Err, no. There are just as many movies/shows now with skimpy outfits and even nudity. If anything, the amount of female nudity is going back up. All shows have to do is have a guy show his ass, and they can put all the female nudity in it they want because of equality. (Not complaining).
The Sandman uniform is iconic. Even now it is instantly identifiable. I had not realized before this video how well it served to separate the sandmen from the other characters.
I liked that design so much that as a high school student in the early 80s, I made myself a pullover shirt like the Sandman tunic. However, I switched grey for red with the accent stripe. Even all these years later, I'd like to have a Sandman costume to wear.
Wow! Tons of great info, including a lot of details I hadn't heard before, with no filler and good pacing. You know how to make a great presentation. I immediately subscribed. I thought it was excellent that you gave us some background by showing what designers were doing in the real world at that time, because it clearly, as you demonstrated, influenced the costume design in the movies. I also liked the little background tidbits about the actors as well. Movie-making is fascinating, especially back then, and you have piqued my enthusiam with your video about this classic movie. Keep up the great work!
Fantastic video. I collect Logan's Run memorabilia, and among my items, I have a screen worn Sandman tunic displayed in my home under glass. Love the costume commentary and analysis in this video, very informative! Thanks!
Well...Wow. I have a soft spot for Logan's Run because I saw it in its original theatrical run when I was 12 y/o and into StarLog and model-building...So I was more obsessed with the special effects and focused on the miniatures than what the actors were wearing. I thought I knew enough details about Logan's Run by now...But you bring up all of these wonderful wardrobe facts and history that I never knew about before. The next time I watch Logan's Run...I'm going to remember your video and release my inner Tim Gunn on on all of those costumes and appreciate them all the more.
Thank you so much Kendrick. Well, I'm a bog fan of the movie myself. I have always loved it since I was a kid and I really enjoyed learning all of these details as well. Your Tim Gunn comment is hilarious btw. :)

I love Jessica's skimpy outfit. But am surprised this movie came up because it's a long lost classic. Also it would be nice if one could place a picture to the voice behind the video. And what is your favorite costume of all time ?
Great video! I watched the movie recently for the first time and I loved the whole thing, especially the look of the people! Great job putting it all together.
I loved watching this movie and the series that followed. As a kid in the 70's , I was thrilled to get to watch shows like this, along with Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica.
There is a fantastic swimming centre by me with chutes and waves etc. You only get 45 minutes to stay there, and they give you a colour-coded wristband in exchange for your locker key to indicate when you got in. Then, when your time is up, a display at the front flashes to show that you have to leave the pool then, get your locker key back and get changed. It always made me think of the coloured jewels in Logan's Run to show how much time you had left to live!
I loved this episode! Very well done Costume Co. A wonderful, detailed, behind-the-scenes look at the costumes of one of my fave science fiction movies. I agree with you that "Logan's Run" does feel a bit "cheesy" today, but I first saw it in the movies when it came out in '76 and still love it. Excellent work on this. One of the best things I've seen on YT in ages. Subscribed :)
I was 7 when Logan's Run hit the theatre. My friends and I were impressed. Then we all know what happened a year later- it was like Plato's Cave Allegory. Jenny Agutter was a stunner! 🤩
Interesting, thanks. This is one of the few movies I recalled the costumes from, even though they were not overtly 'design-heavy. The simplicity is what made them memorable. I was 20 when it came out - I remember liking the sandman shirts - would have worn one! FYI: According to IMDB, the colour-coding according to age is from the original novel.
In the book has the age limit is lower (21) and the age marker is a tattoo on their hand that changes colour as they age. In the highest age (14-21) bracket it's red, turning black on your 21st birthday.
A caftan like he wore for loungewear is one of the easiest clothing items to make with the right pattern and material. Mostly straight seam sewing. I feel like making one:-)
Thanks for a wonderful video. It was much more interesting than I thought it would be. The costumes were great, and Jenny Agutter was so sensual the in way she was dressed WOW!!! The movie came out in 1976, the I graduated from high school. Coincidentally, in my senior year, I was taking a film art class and was doing movie making. Back then there was no such thing as digital photography, and working from Super8 film was a nightmare. This movie had one innovative feature that is often overlooked. I think this was THE VERY FIRST movie to use holograms in it. They were the "multiplex" type. However, the difficulty in making them and the limits of their applications made them impractical. GREAT COSTUMES!!!😁
Thanks for the detailed look at the costumes of one of my favourite films! The Sandman costumes always stood out to me: Simple, yet made dynamic and memorable with the grey stripe on the shirt.
@@Costume_CO You also made me aware, for the first time after all these years (first time I saw it was in the theatre in 1976), about the subtle shade differences in the reds and greens. So many viewings and I never picked up on that. Nice selection of images in the the video too, some of which I've never seen before.

I love videos like this. I do semi-professional theatrical costuming so finding out how other costumers came up with their ideas and executed them is fascinating to me. I am not a designer but rather a technician. I have to work with a designer because I honestly can't come up with the ideas that a true designer does. I do work with a designer locally for our regional theater groups, thankfully. She creates the designs and the looks for our characters in whatever show we're doing together and I make them happen. Once I get a template, I'm good. Seeing how others achieve this always interests me so, yeah, I love that you posted this video for us.
I first saw Logan's Run when I was 17, and Michael York's costume confused me. Since it was almost all black, I didn't notice that the tunic was separate from the shirt and wondered where the gray quilted patch went after it got torn up. This is an interesting video, informative and well-narrated. (Looking at Jenny Agutter's sleek, bare side certainly isn't dull, either.)
Do Caligula next. The costumes, especially for female leads and extras are similar to these but were designed by Donatello Donati who designed for Flash Gordon and Romeo and Juliet among others. Dune 1984 is also a good costume drama.
Its not surprising that there was lots for “free love” as the authors also had written for Playboy. I was 12 when it came out. They re-released the book for the movie. Weird thing is there was a Catholic book club for parochial schools that listed the book to buy. That’s where I bought and read it. It was much more graphics than the movie. My guess is someone at the book club had no idea what was in it.
What an incredible channel. I love how objective, yet informative your commentary is. I've watched and read just about everything about the production of Logan's Run, but you present information I'd never heard of before.
The Screenplay for Logan's Run was written by the late David Zelag Goodman (he also co-wrote Straw Dogs with Sam Peckinpah). It's hard not to see a movie about aimless pretty people, who indulge in free love until they hit 30 and then everything's all over for them as a kind of cultural commentary given it's a 70's movie.
The movie was a childhood fave, but it is full of logical problems and the screenwriter's hack-job introduced still more issues, in addition to him having plagarised Arthur C. Clarke to a certain extent. It's now hard for me to forgive the many flaws in the movie.
Yeah, even then I recognized that it looked like a shopping mall. But malls were everything back then and it made sense that they might expand to become living spaces.
@@aliannarodriguez1581 It still makes sense even now to turn abandoned shopping malls into post-apocalyptic living quarters--I want the B. Dalton's spot!
This was super interesting!! Logan's Run is one of my all-time favorite movies. I really appreciate knowing more about the costume designs for Logan's Run. Thank you!!
@@Costume_CO Yea of course but even then the film sill has a certain indi quality to it. The reason is I believe is that audiences are more sophisticated and much more unforgiving of visual effects then they once were. At least you'd be forgiven for thinking that. Then you watch the latest Star Wars movies where they've brought back some really poor looking costume based alien creations into the franchise purely because it was what fans wanted. having said that they were a niche audience and this doesn't really speak to movies on the whole. If this film were released today with the same cast as they were then of course, I don't think they'd need to do a whole lot to it as the story is great and it's not really an effects based extravaganza like say a Star Wars or Star Trek type move where people go to be visually amazed. I'd put this in the same category as Planet of the Apes or Soilent Green.
@@Costume_CO yeah Logan’s run the film and soundtrack I have owned for some time, and love the insights into the fashion, thanks for your time and effort, really enjoyed your doco.

Well i wouldn't say that. But she definitely gave Farrah a run for her money. The glammed up gorgeous babe vs the natural beauty with a girl-next-door look.
I think Jenny is more classic looking and Fara's style is more of her time. Had she been born 30 years later, Jenny would have been offered every "elf" role going.
Farah's best features were her fantastic figure and hair.. without those she probably wouldn't have been considered any great beauty. Also, Jenny Agutter's voice contributed to her level of attractiveness.

Fascinating :). And not just because of Farrah and Jenny :chuckles:. You have inspired me to watch the film again :thumbs up:. Maybe I shall see if the series is findable online too - I never got to see it when I was young so, even if it is terrible, I won't be bursting any golden memory bubbles :D.
I love Logan's Run so much that I watch it once a year. I don't really understand you Michael York being stubborn could bring down an entire computer system that runs a entire city but overall it was an amazing film. Loved the fashion statements.
I remember them saying on the dvd extras that originally the girls were all supposed to be like Jenny’s costume but given the ages they didn’t think it would fly with the censors.
After viewing your video, I now know where the idea for Victoria's Secret came from. After seeing this movie at a local theater, I had a delightful dream. I was a member of the Removal Squad. Our mission was to remove lady's bras, put them in a pile, and destroy them with our laser pistols. Shucks' I never had that dream again.
Just after the movie came out, many Sci-Fi conventions had "Runners" and "Sandmen" doing skits in the hotel hallways....(not allowed anymore sadly). But many of us had such a good time. I was becoming a good costumer myself back then and recreated Jessica's two tone green chiffon dress and dyed a pair of slippers which had a rubber sole on them, so no slipping on slick surfaces. I even had found actual green tights to wear as colored nylons were somewhat popular back then for wearing with office attire. Yup, it was a thing. Granted I was a "green" and didn't _need_ to run, but at some conventions you just had to have fun. I later recreated a film perfect version of a Sandman for my then boyfriend, wish I had both costumes now even if I couldn't fit into Jessica. Makes me want to remake it, but now I'd have to be "clear/white" as a renewed person. Well past any age category, even the movie was far above the ages for the book it is based on. When the Director wanted Michael York and Richard Jordan for the male leads, he ask George Clayton Johnson and William F. Nolan (co-authors of the book) if he could up the ages for the film as the cut off age in the book is 21. Way too young for most experienced actors at the time. I know this as George Clayton Johnson used to come to those early conventions and I hung out with him a lot. There was copious weed smoking and conversation.....what fun! Those fun days are long gone.
@@Costume_CO You're welcome!!! Glad so many people still like the movie even though it's now so "dated" in it's special effects. I forgot to mention Bill Thomas came to one of the early conventions and I was able to meet him and get a signed original costume design for a different movie he had worked on. I still have it somewhere in my collection. Mr. Thomas was very nice and liked my "green" I had made, that's why he gave me a design from a different movie.
Think about this. How beautiful was Jenny Agutter? Farrah Fawcett was in this movie and she was the second prettiest woman in the film. That is how much of a beauty Jenny Agutter was.
Why did Jenny think that the outfits were embarrassing? In almost every film that she had done, she had taken her clothes off, as she did it in this film
Why are women nervous in their panties and bras, but not in bikinis? My guess is the different feel of the fabrics and construction of the garment. Who knows, they are splendid in both.

I have watched this DVD over and over again just for Jenny Agutter's costumes. Farah Fawcett's appearance in the movie was a bonus. I didn't realize until this video that the citizens' costumes were color coordinated to their age group. Kudos to Bill Thomas.
I had no idea either! I even saw this when it came out, in a movie theater.
Are you sure it was Ms Agutter's costumes you were interested in?😊
@@gedofgont1006 I'll admit, Ms. Agutter is very easy on the eyes.
This is a really well done video. And oh, that Jenny!
Thanks harlovan!
Jenny Agutter was a dream come true.
The Australian film "Walkabout" and "Logan's Run" absolute crush material for guys back in the day.
She was feminine perfection.
Check out Jenny in An American Werewolf In London..
So right, I was and still am in love with her, she is still stunning

That "skimpy revealing outfit", Jennifer, has immortalized you on-screen.....not many can say the same of their own career....
Very true!
@norman smithers and was also to be seen fully unclothed in “Walkabout”, an absolutely wonderful film showcasing Australia’s picturesque outback.
@norman smithers the shower scene. And her co-star - the lucky dude.
Equus, as well.
It took me an hour before I realized that Jessica was Sister Julienne from “Call the Midwife.” She is still a beautiful and skilled actor.
Logan's Run, Soylent Green, Westworld, Planet of the Apes were movies I watched as a kid, Incredible times in cinema
Yes, I loved them all!
Same here. These films and the Logan's Run series were iconic films for me.
Dystopian sci fi... really love them .
Films that never really have a happy ending...!
I think the only one there I haven't seen is Silent Running but I know it's a cult classic.
Yeah, loved Clockwork Orange, The Exorcist and The Omen as well
The Sandman uniform is iconic. Even now it is instantly identifiable. I had not realized before this video how well it served to separate the sandmen from the other characters.
Thank you so much for commenting Charlotte!
I liked that design so much that as a high school student in the early 80s, I made myself a pullover shirt like the Sandman tunic. However, I switched grey for red with the accent stripe. Even all these years later, I'd like to have a Sandman costume to wear.
One of my all time favorite movies. Excellent cast and story.
Thanks so much Rick. I'm a huge fan as well and I always try to think about what I would want to know. I really appreciate your kind comment.
Fantastic video. I collect Logan's Run memorabilia, and among my items, I have a screen worn Sandman tunic displayed in my home under glass. Love the costume commentary and analysis in this video, very informative! Thanks!

The ultimate collectible in the collection? Jenny Agutter! ❤️
Man that's really cool, do you know which Sandman wore it?

Who doesn’t remember Jenny Agguter in Logan’s Run, she was and is absolutely gorgeous.
I saw the movie when I was nine and not ashamed to admit that I was so mesmerized by Jenny Agutters hemline that by the end, I totally forgot what the movie was about.

Thank you for making this channel, seriously is the only channel that I know that talks heavily about this stuff is amazing. You deserve more views.

@@Costume_CO Logan's Run is one of my favorite movies that does not get enough love.
Mine too! I'm so happy to see that so many people love it as much as I do!
It's quite possible that they took the color-coding from the books but adjusted the ages, maybe the colours. Thank you for commenting!
Thank you for your comment kab kab.
Yes, holograms were going to be future of imaging. Heard that for many years. Guess they did wind up having a niche use though.
What a wonderful narration and work you produced. Thank you for taking the time to do it. 😃😃

Thanks Zardoz, it's in my top ten for sure. I also love the Sandmen costumes. Very simple and elegant.
@@Costume_CO You also made me aware, for the first time after all these years (first time I saw it was in the theatre in 1976), about the subtle shade differences in the reds and greens. So many viewings and I never picked up on that.

I quite liked Jenny's "birthday suit " !
Mmmmm....Jenny Agutter...my first crush because of her costume

Hi Darkstar, I am working on a Dune 1984. Thanks for commenting.
Catholic scholars are no joke. You can bet they knew that kids would like the titillation but get the message that such societies are doomed.
What an incredible channel. I love how objective, yet informative your commentary is.
I've watched and read just about everything about the production of Logan's Run, but you present information I'd never heard of before.
Wow, thank you so much. I am pretty biased though, I loved this movie. 😍
I read the book some time after the movie came out and I much preferred the more glamorous settings in the movie. The book was just plain depressing.
I have no idea why your channel showed up in my feed but I am grateful. This is amazing.
Wow, thank you!

I think Logan's Run is *the* iconic 1970s sci-fi movie. I mean the domed city is basically a giant shopping mall! ;-)
Yeah, even then I recognized that it looked like a shopping mall. But malls were everything back then and it made sense that they might expand to become living spaces.

@@Costume_CO Thank you!!
I don't think Logan's Run is cheesy. I think it's a great film.
I love the movie. Just meant compared to all of the special effects and CGI we have now.
And I love Soilent Green and Planet of the Apes. 😊
@@Costume_CO They're all pretty cool dystopian futuristic flicks.

Just my opinion but Jenny made Fara look like a dog.
And believe me that wasn’t easy :)
Well i wouldn't say that. But she definitely gave Farrah a run for her money.
The glammed up gorgeous babe vs the natural beauty with a girl-next-door look.
I saw Farrah in person, 2 feet away. She looked burned out.

Good Job!
They could have financed the movie by selling "Leg Make Up Technician " apprenticeships.
That would have been a fun job for someone haha!
Hi Sandra, thank you so much for commenting and sharing your experiences!
Hi Sandra, that is very cool. Thank you for sharing.
Think about this. How beautiful was Jenny Agutter? Farrah Fawcett was in this movie and she was the second prettiest woman in the film. That is how much of a beauty Jenny Agutter was.
Yeah, Farrah Fawcett just looks so OTT cheesily American next to the rather more demure and vulnerable Jenny!
