    1. When I survey the wond'rous Cross
    On which the Prince of Glory dy'd,
    My richest Gain I count but Loss,
    And pour Contempt on all my Pride.
    2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
    Save in the Death of Christ my God:
    All the vain Things that charm me most,
    I sacrifice them to his Blood.
    3. See from his Head, his Hands, his Feet,
    Sorrow and Love flow mingled down!
    Did e'er such Love and Sorrow meet?
    Or Thorns compose so rich a Crown?
    4. His dying Crimson, like a Robe,
    Spreads o'er his Body on the Tree;
    Then am I dead to all the Globe,
    And all the Globe is dead to me.
    5. Were the whole Realm of Nature mine,
    That were a Present far too small;
    Love so amazing, so divine,
    Demands my Soul, my Life, my All.

    Growing up in the Caribbean in the 1970's and 1980's in the Methodist Church, it was church every Sunday, no excuses. And this hymn was a big part of my childhood. I still adore it so.

      This splendid melody was composed by George Miller (1735 - 1807) one time flautist in Handel's orchestra. He was appointed organist of St George's Minster, Doncaster in 1756, a post he held for fifty years until death.
      The tune has all the solid workmanship I enjoy in the best of18th century compositions. Measured, dignified, assured and beautiful.

    Fascinating. Just ran across the cross-Atlantic divide on this hymn. Americans tend to sing it to a different tune (“Hamburg”). This tune is “Rockingham.”
    Beautifully sung, but still wrong to my ear. Church I grew up in used the “were the whole realm” verse as a musical response to the offering.

    does it ever seem amazing, that the God of the universe who created all things and upholds all things by the word of his power, forsook his glory, came to earth in the form of a mere creature that he created, was scorned at every turn, yet he was proclaiming God's redemption and love for mankind, and then was crucified by same people whom he was preaching to, and was punished by God himself for the rebellion of all mankind. Seems almost mind-boggling. No human would ever do such a thing.
    "For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person - though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die - but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" -- Romans 5:6-8
