The problem is, even if the Tory's did adopt a load of right wing policies, nobody would believe them. Years of talking tough and doing nothing, has created a huge credibility problem for them.
The UK public is not right-wing and never has been. Support for progressive parties far exceeds support for the right wing at every election. Adopting "a load of right wing policies" is certain to lead to their defeat.

"Be Conservative". They should at least offer a choice between their vision for the country and everyone else's. If that vision appears unfashionable at any given moment, then so be it. At this point in the electoral cycle they were doomed whatever they did.

Tories still can't quite grasp how much they are disliked.
They knew they were going to lose the general election. They only called a snap election to stop reform from becoming the mainstream right wing party by giving them enough time to convince more voters.
It was too prevent tory extinction and it worked. 130 tory mp to reform 5. So next election right wing will feel reform vote is hopeless leaving only tory as a supposed right wing party with any chance of defeating Labour. So keeping the majority of thier voter base.
Will be a new leader, new promises of a reformed tory party and "it's all fault of the last guy, we've learnt, we're your only option to win" and most voters will fall for it

@@Robc--jd6yh ok but there are a lot of instances of this being caused by specific circumstances like the World War Two coalition era having no elections or the collapse of the liberal party, split left during the SDP much later on (and just the generally split left with the libdems since then). The one time the tories ever managed to win a massive majority was the same as Labour has right now with the whole “voting against Labour more than for the tories” during the Great Depression. LABOUR was the one who managed to inspire a positive vote in favour in 1997, I would point out that by 1997 Major had done well to fix the economy in many senses and lost anyways so that was less about being anti-Tory and more pro-Labour. So no that doesn’t substantiate the idea that Britain is instinctively conservative except for surface level analysis.

Who cares what Rishi Sunak wanted? The British electorate wanted the Tories out months before the election. My personal feeling was that there should had been an election after Truss went down in flames - what arrogance to foist a second unelected leader on the country in a single parliament, especially given the records of the two previous leaders.
Tim Montgomerie may be one of the only ethical conservatives left. We governed badly, we deserved it, he says. We were left with the dregs. Damn right.

Despite the very obvious fact that Sunak lost the General Election quite heavily, he must be very relieved on a more personal level to have the whole ordeal out of the way.
There's one thing I do believe, is that deep down he's a quite decent guy.
Tim talks sense, but remember who the Tory members are. They chose Truss, they'll choose a Braverman or a Patel rather than fighting reform head on
They should be aligning with reform to give the country a proper right wing option.

It's not a mile wide and an inch deep, tactical voting was widespread, we knew we'd be getting a Labour government regardless, we chose to vote for progressive mps and get as many tories out as possible, that's why Lib Dems gained 60 odd seats, in places this backfired, and the progressive vote was split, you're seriously underestimating how badly the Tories are thought of throughout the UK

How can they choose a leader when they don’t any longer know who they are or what they stand for? They definitely need to take their time to do as Tim suggests. I’m a Labour supporter, so they can take as long as they like as far as I’m concerned - but we do eventually need an effective opposition and a strong second party in our FPTP system.

Labour have shifted into the middle ground (centre left) so what do the Tories do now? I believe that the likelihood of interest rates falling to 2% which they bid, but with the possibility of rising again, and that the thoughts of many would more on holidays & football than voting when a low turnout usually favours his party, were central to the reason for his decision for an early election.

All you've got to do to find out what the Conservatives are and what they're for is to ASK YOUR ELECTORATE.
Fishing around for university professors and talking to ex MPs, and 'internationalising' your party is only going to reinforce the political bubble that led you to this situation. Reform are a grass roots party which has the people's wishes at it's core - hence 15% of the vote in the election. That's the point.
