As one who is just getting into the whole wood carving and especially green wood I'm encouraged to see what can be done with less wood. I understand the concept of having enough to put a comfortable crank in the spoon. My wife on the other hand sees the waste of traditional carving. So, I will be showing her this video. Cheers!
You sure have good aim with that sharp carving axe!! I would have to put the closest ER on my speed-dial list!! LOL!! You sure enjoy this and it shows too!! You also are showing many how to be flexible with the work at hand. You’ll see be back often AND soon!! Thanks!!
I enjoyed this video. Cool to see how thin you can get with those billets. I’m a beginner at carving spoons. I start off with waaay too thick of a billet, rough it out with an axe, start carving with a knife, and then realize it is still way too thick and I need to go back to the axe. It looks so much easier and faster to start with smaller pieces, so I’ll for sure do that next time. Thanks!
This is a very nicely put together video! I’m very glad I watched this because I have a limited amount of wood I can work with and a limited amount of time so your experiment helped me a lot!
I don't have the luxury of greenwood so I have to rely on online blanks/billets. As a complete novice I find it really difficult getting a crank on my spoons because I find the blanks way too thin for me to work with. Your video demonstrates this needn't be an issue. Mind you, I don't have your axing skills. Cheers for the video 👍
This was helpful for me. I’m just getting started and I tend to make my billets too large and create more work for myself. I’m going to try smaller billets.

Very nice!
Good to see axeing out over and over for refresher.
Practice makes perfect!
