    Wow you are very brave planting all them! I love them and if I had the room and I was 20 years younger I would do it, but keeping on top of them is another thing. Thanks for all your info, I currently have a 50 year old willow in my garden which has been useful for making structures, but it's multi trunk is rotting and it needs to come down as it gets top heavy each year!

      Its s shame that some species of willow are short lived, although at least its easy to replace them with cuttings. Yes it can be a lot of work, It usually takes me one long day or two short days each year to keep them pruned, although all the branches that come off makes it worthwhile as they are so useful in the garden.

      Use the cutting from that tree and grow a bunch of new one and your timer will reset. Willow seem will live forever through propagation

      @@lionolee5480 yes that's true, even a very old weak tree can provide good cutting material which will grow like a young tree once planted.

    I really enjoy the willow trees! Thank you for this update. The catkins or whatever those are called, the time lapse video was awesome! I love seeing how harsh they can be pruned and then bust growth on the next year. Really cool! I read that willow bark and leaves are what Indian Americans used as aspirin and that they also help other plants root if you soak them in water that willows have been in. I would think having the wood chipped would help other plants root well, too, if that's all true. I'm going to look into having willows here.

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the update. Yes both of those facts are correct, although I think it's only a few varieties of willow that are used as medicine. Yes I think if the wood chips are used as mulch it could help cuttings to take root or help newly planted plants to establish their roots more quickly. They are such amazing trees, especially their ability to recover from pruning, make sure you carefully select the correct type of willow for your garden. Some willow trees are huge and will take over most gardens, where as others are small trees or shrubs which are well behaved and stay small. Also there are some which have brightly coloured stems which look great over winter.

    Enjoyed this... Just planted a load of willows @ 59° Orkney 👌

      Hopefully they will grow well for you, I find that their leaves can get a little damaged by the worst winds, but they are such vigorous plants that they come bouncing right back. They still grow very quickly despite our cool summers and so should do well in Orkney.

    That was a fascinating video on Willow shrubs... Or are they considered more a tree if left to grow? I had no idea they were pussy willow's till I saw their blooms, and you also called them by that name I think. I love your archways you made also. They're so creative. You used a term that sounded like 'pollarded' in reference to some of the shorter willows you had trimmed. Could you please enlighten me for the correct spelling and meaning? You lost me on that one. I love the way you had so many different uses for the trimmed branches. I wish our neighbor would plant some in his wetlands at the foot of our hill. He put in some big willows so they'll be nice too. They are among the top five trees for supporting wildlife if I recall rightly... White oak being the first. That's here in the states though. Probably different in the UK. Anyway I loved your video and learned quite a bit about pussy willow's. My sister grew some very similar to yours, but it was more of a bush. I think she kept it pruned back hard though.

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video. This variety is probably more like a tree, there are hundreds of different species of willows some are tiny shrubs less than 1 foot tall and others are giant trees over 100 feet tall. There are a lot in between which are somewhere between a tree and a shrub, this one of those as it only grow to about 20 feet tall. Pussy willow is a vague description of various willow species which have nice catkins, so my willow could be called this although it's usually the smaller willows that are known as pussy willow. Yes pollarded is the correct spelling, a pollard is a tree which is pruned back to the same part of the trunk or branches (usually 3ft up or higher on the tree) on a regular interval to keep the tree small and also to encourage long straight branches. A coppice is similar but the tree is cut close to the ground. This was done a lot with willows in the past so that straight branches could be grown for baskets and fencing. I don't know the exact variety of mine, but it's a hybrid willow with the species Salix viminalis (osier willow) as one of its parents. As a hybrid willow it grow a lot faster than most willows, it is also good for wildlife, especially insects. This variety is often used for baskets as the stems are very long and flexible. There are also some similar species with bright yellow or red stems.

    Thank you very much for your video. I found it very informative information on willows.
    I am wondering if you could list species name and hybrid as well. I’m living in Australia and willows are considered a bit of a weed but I would like to know more about them.

      Thanks, I'm glad you found my video informative. Unfortunately I don't know which type of hybrid willow I have but part of its parentage will be salix viminalis. It's a very fast growing willow, it gets to full height in a few years, but then doesn't grow fast again unless it's cut, maximum height is only around 8m.

    i wonder if you could partially cut those branches on the arch like in hedgelaying to make them make the bend more tightly

    Such an invasive plant. It looks like a great idea but in practice they will take over your soil and above ground too.

      Some willow species can be very bad, especially their roots. Choosing the right species is key as there are many small willows which are well behaved and can be grown in small gardens. This variety is a hybrid using Salix viminalis as one of the parents and so only grows about 20 feet tall despite it's rapid growth. Although at 20 feet it's best suited to large gardens.

    What's the specific variety of willow?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 роки тому +1

      I can't remember the exact variety, but it's a type of hybrid willow which has Salix viminalis as one of it's parents, so it grows similar to this species, but with much faster growth.
