The best UA-cam channel on the platform.
I normally don’t take the advice of strangers on the Internet, but I’m gonna listen to you my friend subbed
As opposed to all of those UA-cam channels not on UA-cam? 👀 But yes it is lol
I love this channel! Would you have any recommendations for channels that are similar to this? I also like Astrum and SEA for information about outer space.
It's hard when there's so much low quality content that only cares about getting followers. Finding a decent channel like John Godier's feels like finding a needle in the haystack!
No Anna has the best channel on the platform and John just is along for the ride!
Amen
One of the rare times that JMG uploads new video just in time when I, a human from Europe, go to sleep. Thank you John and have a nice evening!
I wish we could get a video about protostars from John. Please upvote if you agree.
Actually, I've begun to worry already, that silence has been somewhat disturbing....who knows what the possum could have been up to. Could've easily kidnapped JMG and the LeBaron to another dimension, and we would be none the wiser. It's good to see you again, JMG (:
I just had a cold. The possum has been absent as well. On a lunar landing mission. I thought it was a first for possum kind, but it turns out they've been going for thousands of years and he was just on vacation.
This is where I invite everyone to join patreon! We love you, and we think that you and the possum and your android are amazing! As long as it’s not Jasper or chat, GPT.. I have to be fair. Jasper is much more intelligent as far as I can tell but who knows chat might be up there and by the time this gets posted, they will be something else that much more all encompassing Hopefully. By the sounds of your last guess that I listen to six days ago, he didn’t have much of a clue about what AI will be capable of in the future. I didn’t want to say it, but I’ll say it here. I enjoy all of the podcast on every channel! You guys do amazing job.
The section in 2010 where super-Bowman descends into Jupiter and encounters metallic hydrogen--among other things!--has stayed with me ever since I first read it. Clarke had an incredible, subtle power to his prose.
I’ve also read 2001 and 2010 several times, they absolutely enthrall me every time…Moon watcher is my favourite character.
The Götterdämmerung from the Iron Skies movie used metallic hydrogen as ammunition.
The movie was surprisingly self aware and nailed some science aspects other movies get wrong all the time.
Good music, too.
Wait, now MOVIES have become self aware?! I can think of a few, that might need some therapy and additional observation🍿...
That was a great film, the scene where there was a lever you had to pull in case of motivation emergency and then anthem started to play had me rolling on the floor
Also helium3 which may or may not be element 115 the fuel for thier ufos in the movie
Self aware? A film can not be self aware. What a bizarre thing to say. 😅
This is the second one of your videos I have watched. I kind of fell into one by mistake but was so entranced I decided to try again and you didn't disappoint. Very clear narration, no wild claims, excellent explanations and visuals. I'm off to binge on a few more. Thank you for the work you do to produce these. btw you have a new subscriber.
Welcome aboard. I'm working on a new video for release probably tonight if I finish it in time. You might also enjoy my other channel Event Horizon where I do an interview talk show with the scientists that work on these subjects.
Whenever I think I can’t go on, I just imagine John saying “you have to liiiiiiiiiiiiive” with all of the emotion and umph his closing bit is known for, and I feel reinvigorated and ready to take on the world.
It takes so little? Well done. You're a complete human being.
😂
I've never been this early ! Love from South Africa !
The writer, the voice, the Godier. Never stop please.
I'm gonna listen to this to hear what JMG says ... and then I'm gonna listen to it again to hear the silky smooth sound of him saying it.
What headphones you using? His voice sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr Strange accent (kind of grating).
Now just imagining dropping a giant bucket into Jupiter and pulling up some metallic hydrogen
P.M. Robotaille makes a very cogent and convincing argument for our Sun, and by extension - all stars, having metallic hydrogen.
I'm glad someone beat me to mentioning Dr. Pete.. His research is astounding. Does he still consider the electric sun model? He was a big contributor to the EU
Excellent content as always. Thumbs up!
Why do i feel like the only thing i need now is John reading Asimov for 10 hours
this channel reminds me so much of a now-defunct channel. it was hosted by a narrator who was definitely an AI (ily anyway JMG), but the subject matter was ancient myths and stories from all around the world. it sounded like a lot of the stories had been directly ripped from textbooks, because sometimes the AI would read chapter headings. the channel was called Matrix Wisdom, which, if you look it up today, only publishes wild conspiratorial videos about ancient aliens and the like, which is a damn shame. it happened suddenly too- at one point a few years ago it took down every single one of its videos and suddenly switched to that kind of clickbait content. it’s certainly an interesting youtube mystery that might never have answers, but if anyone here recalls this channel back in 2019-2020, please reply because i feel like im remembering a fever dream here, but the channel is definitely real
also I love this channel so much because it scratches the same itch.
These days AI/ML is being used for copyright purposes to transcribe videos and compare not against just video/audio but also the actual text content of the video as well, so my guess is that someone was taking their script direct from textbook which probably got their videos taken down by some publishing company. Conspiracy theory stuff comes mainly from open source info so no copyright.
Heaps of early AI using channels were taken down for using voices/content that they didn't own the rights to, a few have managed to successfully replace their original stuff, like David Attenborough 40K Lore to Scholars Lore channel.
I had a similar thought when it first disappeared, that maybe a publisher got UA-cam to take it down. it’s a shame to hear how common this was. given that the content was literally ancient myths and legends, though, im kind of stunned a publisher was somehow able to secure rights to stories that predate the concept of copyright by hundreds or thousands of years. sure, it’s been translated into english, but these stories are the heritage of all human beings, and it seems wrong that the only sources accessible to me are gatekept like this.
So glad to have you back John :)
I could listen to this all day.
"It's Hydrogen, Jim, but not as we know it."
You always find some awesome subjects that nobody else is talking about!
Brown dwarfs. They're the runts of the cosmos, I'd love to see you do one on them. PS they may be runts but they ain't boring.
Excellent!! I’m so stoked to listen to this all night ! On auto play where we Livvvveeee! Most definitely the best! Thank you!🙏💖🙏
Needed my JMG fix today, good timing.
There’s a lot of insane physics just kind of happening out there in the universe
Fascinating stuff indeed! Thanks, John! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Love your video's John Godier, keep up the amazing work
Hi John, you're amazing! I was wondering, because I read somewhere about time moving 5 times slower after the Big Bang, if you ever talked about that in your videos? Cheers from a long time fan!
Great stuff as always, JMG! 👏☄🚀🌠🌌🔭👽
Does everyone hear "oh, the humanity!" in their head each and every time that famous photo of the Hindenberg exploding is shown?
Actually thought that when I put the image in the video. Horrifies me to this day.
Thanks JMG
Thanks JMG.
Great to see you again!
Hi I really enjoy ur videos keep at it!
Great look at a common element.
Obligatory comment to make the algorithm love the best astronomy channel on UA-cam!
Come on, JMG... You took so long to release this new video! Finally here!
Thanks jmg
🎉hooray. Thought you forgot us short form content consumers. Kidding. Kind of. I may be addicted to the blue dot 🔵.
Thanx. Now, for no reason other than I am a curious sort, am now *utterly* fascinated by the Diamond Anvil Cell. Went straight away to read it about it. (and i've been ignoring my cat for an entire 30 mins. i'm not sure she'll survive....
I had the pleasure of playing with one of those. It's a bit of tungsten carbide holding a synthetic sapphire carrier with two precision polished diamonds that squeeze whatever you like between them to oblivion. It was used to simulate pressures reached by high explosive charges on various materials to determine the feasibility of using energetic conversion of chemicals and composites to specialized types as well as doping materials that would not accept the atoms at normal conditions with the end goal of using explosives to produce the end product. One that was rather interesting was to dope some gadolinium oxysulfide with xenon to make a radiation detection material and the xenon became metallic when squished😮
I love john micheal godier
Jooooohn! You didn't mention Water's special Talent! The Triple Point! Where it's boiling ice water all at the same time!!!!
Always fascinating, thank you!
Personally, I find the noble gasses very suspicious; they just don't seem to want to interact with anyone, what gives?
Typical extrovert prejudice against introverts, smh
Atomic autism?
As an American, I've always been suspicious of nobles.
They have a hard time bonding because they are fulfilled. They're happy in their outer shells.
Nobility is like that.
actually the sun is likely made of metallic hydrogen. Both @SkyScholar and @TheMachian have videos on this here on youtube
Nice. Dr. Pete @SkyScholar.
ty for another late night video for me to play to sleep
In one of the recent videos You gave a little rant on how You think that Pluto and object alike should be called planets. May You make a video just on that?
I'm very curious
Love Your content
Cheers!
Sorry I am late to the awesome. I saw this when I was beginning my shift. And there was absolutely no way I was going to let my job distract me from this.
"Whenever you drink a beverage, you're ingesting water." - Challenge Accepted
Would most certainly agree!
I like the idea we are star dust and one day we will go back to that state and maybe end up on a far distant planet in another life form looking up at far different sun
my father always told me this when I was little. I truly hope so
Some 1950s SciFi movie I saw had hydrogen radicals as rocket fuel, basically same thing, them combining to H2 would give very good Isp.
Best channel around, learn the stuff we all should know about here. 😮
Yaaaaaay!!!
Your voice is magnificent.
JMG,.. you are the freaking GOAT since Art Bell (and you're on equal footing there). I love seeing when a new video is up !!! !!!!!
There's a story there. I had radio experience, and knew Art Bell. He encouraged me to use "the pipes" and that ultimately led to this channel and Event Horizon. You could say I was a kind of student of the professor.
@@JohnMichaelGodier - .. and now you sit in his chair! (it fits great). Cool back story,.. appreciate you sharing it !
Yeah, perhaps, but I wish Art was still around. He's been gone something like six years now, and would be pushing 80 at this point, but man, won't lie, with the developments of the last few years that I've been covering, it would be nice to hear it once more. "From the high desert and the Great American southwest ...".
Coast to Coast as it is today is totally missing all of this stuff. I'll do it, happily, but Art did it better.
Interstitial storage is more dense and can be done at room temperature. Berlin buses were running on that decades ago !
Can't stop thinking of the fella who said he was rolling up blunt and smoking it in honor of John 😂😂
i missed you buddy❤
Hydrogen can form an intermetallic alloy with palladium that has a formula of PdH2. The hydrogen is in a metallic form in this alloy. One result is that it is extremely chemically reactive compared to hydrogen gas and so it can be used to add hydrogen to stuff like cooking oil to make grease or margerine. It is used in chemistry as a catylist with some extra hydrogen to replace the hydrogen that gets used. ❤
This was the best mindbending thing I needed before bed
there is also ultra dense deuterium, which is about as much unobtanium as metallic hydrogen, if not slightly more, from being rydberg matter
Metallic hydrogen is likely to exist in many environments in our Solar System however it’s going to be a hundred years before we learn it’s basic properties.
Thx
3:30 didn't everyone finally decide the Hindenburg was primarily related to the coating?
Search for: "The Sun: Liquid Metallic Hydrogen"
Can anyone please tell me the video in which the “sleep crowd” is addressed? I have been searching for days and cannot seem to find it. Thanks in advance!
I don't remember the exact ones sadly, but I've done it several times. I also promote the Event Horizon clips channel as sleep focused content because it has really long aggregate videos you can put on for falling asleep. I take that aspect very seriously, if I can help people get a good night's sleep, that's a very good thing in my view. Useful content on many levels. Also shout out to the anti-anxiety crowd as well.
Why you took so long... was worried for a min
Posted 58 seconds ago.
Today was a good day.
That’s weird, it doesn’t look like 1am outside 😂
Came for the in which we liveeeee!
In which we liiiiiive
That is soooo metal!
Fahrenheit and Celcius mentioned in the same video.
John! You're evolving!
😂🤣😂
omg - metallic hydrogen being meta-stable?
Who would have known.
Can every element be in each state (solid, gas, liquid, plasma) under the right conditions?
1:25 john, did you have to meet a video length requirement?
So, if it’s “meta-stable” would that make it theoretically plausible to mine for it in the gas giants, assuming the requisite materials advances are made?
The universe:
JMG: *eyes suspiciously*
There are scales in our universe that are so immense, it's understandable if we can barely grasp them. It's hard for us to comprehend dynamic chaotic systems. Especially vast systems. What if at those immense scales, we don't yet fully grasp how things fully work? Like density, mass, Electromagnetism, static charges, fluid dynamics, temperature, pressure, radiation, velocity, etc. *I think there is a lot left to learn about these behaviors on VAST scales throughout our cosmos? I hope we continuously try to improve our understanding of the cosmos over time because it would be foolish to think we fully understand these things. Especially when talking about scales of galactic filaments, multiple galaxies interacting, and many more cosmic bodies & structures. We are getting better & better but some things are just so vast it's understandable we don't yet fully grasp them yet. I'm curious to see where things go as we advance our ability to study these things.
Metallic hydrogen is just going through a phase.
Boron is very weird for sure. 😁
If you think about it we are all billions of years old, all of us as old as the universe.
John it’s been too long! Although, quality over quantity, always! Love your work.
Voice was trashed for over a week from a cold. I'm back now.
@@JohnMichaelGodier sorry to hear, glad you’re on the mend!
im gonna stop saying "im thirsty" and start saying "i need solvent"
Metallic… hydrogen?
That’s the ticket, laddie…
I’m just wondering what other types of hypothetical machines could be conceived/invented if we were to find in space certain specific elements. My guess is that scientists already have a few hypothetical machines already but they’re missing such elements
The Hindenburg caught fire because they coated it with powdered aluminum, highly combustible and a conductor. When they grounded it the charge when into that coating and it went up in flames almost instantly.
could the same be possible with oxygen as an oxygen giant would be interesting and might explain some of the mini netunes and trappist one g
i wonder if we make a mistake when imagining atoms as they are in fact a collection of quarks which are very strange indeed. The description of the atom as the basic unit stems from the Greeks !
Solid hydrogen is one of my favorite sci-fi doohickeys. Not much is known, so anything is possible.
You sure do worry an awful lot, John. I recommend 'the plant.'
Robert Plant is good. I also found a bag of brightly colored gummy bears once that were pretty good too.
It's theorized that metallic hydrogen would be stable if it could be processed. It may also be true to make it electromagnetic. If 2 polarized electromagnetic metallic hydrogen electrodes came together it should cause fusion to occur. This could be the basis for a fusion rocket or fusion energy
I think rigid zeppelin is redundant
Best way to see this developed in our lifetime is to convince the states they can make some super powerful high pressure hydrogen bomb that has no fallout
More weirdness from the universe in which we liiiiive some day we will find this stuff that's what we do best. Probably not in my lifetime but some day.....
I have some in my backyard. I'm not sharing. Hehe :)
Yipppee😊
I wouldn’t mind John doing a series on each element.
What say you JMG followers?
It's happening. Hydrogen was first obviously, but I'm gonna do them all in succession with a focus on the strange attributes each of them have and how all of that integrates into the universe. There are some very, very strange mysteries and oddities with many of the elements. Helium is next, but ahead lays such things as red oxygen and technetium stars ....
@@JohnMichaelGodier Thanks Mr. Godier. Maybe it was announced; if it was, I certainly missed it. Looking forward to the series.
Happy days
I've always wondered what would happen if, early on in solar system, a planetoid had collided with Jupiter or Saturn. If the metallic hydrogen in their cores was metastable then there ought to be fragments of those collisions still floating out in space.
Metastable may not mean stable without containment. I think it often just means the pressure needed to keep it in that state could be a lot lower than the pressure needed to put it in that state.. like pushing a boulder up a hill that is less steep at a certain height.
