I've always loved the idea of passing on a watch to a family member (e.g., son, daughter, cousin, etc.) As someone who started to appreciate watches in my teens, hopefully, if that day comes and I have a son or daughter, I could pass down a watch to them. After losing my father to cancer, my mother passed me his Mickey Seiko dress watch. He bought it overseas while stationed in Guama during active duty in the Air Force, and it is a piece I will never let go of. The sentimental value of that watch is priceless to me. It's probably going on 30 years old, but it still runs and has become my go-to watch for special occasions as it reminds me that he's always with me.
I gave an old room-mate one of my bikes I was going to sell and watched him not only become obsessed with riding/fixing bikes but I watched him lose about 50lbs over the next year. Best thing I ever did. I have 4 nephews and a niece and I am always giving them my cheaper watches and it's fun to see them wearing/destroying them.

@Cyn D Agree with you digital currencies that were once viewed as mysterious by many in the past went sky high making millions of dollars for a lot of people including I. It'll definitely do that soon
@Cyn D The crazy part is that those advisors are probably outperforming the market and raising good returns but some are charging fees over fees drain your portfolio. Is this the case with yours too?

Gotta respect the fact that you are running a business that includes buying and selling watches and the first couple of points were aimed at making sure people really wanted to part with a watch and then encouraging people to think about gifting them.

If you have friends that like watches, I’d consider long-term trades. Trade your watch for 3-6 months and you get to try something else while figuring out if you will miss your watch.
When Teddy was talking about giving it to someone who may enjoy it, a Patek Chronograph was shown. All I can think of was uh, not that watch 😂. I gave an Orient Defender to a friend’s son who is majoring in civil engineering. He likes watches. He was his high school’s valedictorian. It was a real feel good moment. So far my son has my Green Alpinist. More to come for him. I’ve sold many on Chrono and some straight to dealers when I weighed the offer against seller fees and price negotiations.
Great video on such important topic in the watch community! My main reason for selling the watches i have fallen out of love with was to acquire a more expensive 'grail' watch and achieve quality instead of quantity in my collection. I did pass some of the watches to my family members and my partner which gives you so much pleasure knowing they enjoy it and wear it every day! ❤️ So sometimes selling is definitely not the only option.
Also don't forget to mention the hidden fees when buying or selling watches overseas particularly with import taxes. It happened to me when I bought my Sinn 104 in Chrono 24 from an authorized dealer in Latvia. As always, great video Teddy!

Great video and 100% spot on. I recently sold one watch even though I still liked it I just did not have have the love affair with it anymore. Only watch I have ever sold, but replaced it with an Omega Seamaster 300 which I do love. On the other hand I also have my first mechanical watch which was given to me as a wedding present from my in laws, that watch will never be sold and will go to the brave enough boy who decides to marry my daughter, same as for me when I got married. Some things should stay and be giving in the same way it was presented!
Probably the best, most useful video I have enjoyed from you Teddy. I have been impressed by my own rediscoveries of watches I haven’t held or worn in quite a while as I have enjoyed a newer piece. As my collection has expanded, this has had the wonderful effect of slowing me down and, surprisingly to me, increased my enjoyment. Keep up the great work!
Great suggestions. I would add, that perhaps before you purchase a watch you make sure you really love it and know you will enjoy it. I have never sold a watch I have purchased, mostly because I plan on handing them down to my boys but I genuinely do enjoy the pieces I have purchased. I know this isn’t always feasible and can really grow a collection beyond what’s manageable but that’s sort of my point about being disciplined when purchasing with intention.
Love the idea of giving a watch as a gift. I gave a Longines to my boyfriend. He was totally surprised and loves the watch. It stayed “in the family” and I enjoy seeing him wear it. I’ve also used watches as a trade for another model. I don’t get as much as I do when I sell it outright. But I don’t have hassle. All great ideas. Thanks, Teddy! Great video.

I love the idea of experiencing the watch the way it was attended. I recently was on vacation with my Family. We took the kids on small steam engine train ride. I had pointed out to me from an other watch infusions who I met on the train that I was wearing the perfect watch for the experience, a Ball! I new the history but did not think about it until that moment. It was a really watch nerd experience to be wearing a Ball wile on a steam Engine. Really made me fall in love with the Watch again!
I like „use it for its purpose“. If you have a GMT set the local time to your next vacation location a week before you go there. You can still see your home time (=actual local time), but also see the time at your next vacation destination (especially nice when you travel overseas)
Great points - I have an Orient Triton pepsi dial which wasn't getting much use. I bought a blue rubber dive strap and it breathed some new life into it - and I find excuses to go swimming with it on. Really took an old watch that sat unused quite a bit and it's now a favorite to pull out.

Good content as always Teddy. Have no comments about the video but about you. I've been following your channel from the beginning and there is no other way but to take my hat off for the level you reached. Your videos are successful and the channel is growing month after month. Everything is great and I'm happy for you because you seem like a good guy and deserve it. One thing I noticed during this video is that you look tired, exhausted. I hope I'm wrong but please take care of yourself and think long term. Wish you all the best! I love gifting watches. When I realized that I just couldn't get comfortable with a 44mm, 15mm thick diver, I gave it to a friend with an 8+" wrist. He loves it.
Selling starts with buying. I made the mistake of binge-buying a bunch of entry-level affordable watches, only to sell them 1-2 months later for 60%-70% of their original prices. A more cautious buyer makes a less anxious seller. Be more careful with your purchasing decisions.
I second considering giving away the watch to someone who would really appreciate it. I did this with some lenses when I was very into photography. When a lens became redundant I considered selling but found some close people who were extremely happy to find them in the mail. Obviously this is dependent on your financial situation and you should never feel bad about making back money. One point of “timeless” items like watches is they hold value. But I never regretted really making someone’s day and if you are financially comfortable to do so the feeling of making someone so happy really counters any future regret at the departure of the watch.

Teddy, this one just shines with enchanting video vignettes. Tiny shots that have to have taken real time to setup. Are you using a self-generated library of “stock footage” or are these one-offs produced just for this vid? Who is your cinematographer?
I almost always regret selling. I think that if I’m tempted to get rid of any in the future, I’ll simply give them to my kids as you suggested (I’ve started my boys on Casios, but they don’t have autos yet). I really don’t have that many: 5 autos, a G-shock, a Casio Pathfinder, & a Garmin.

Great video, Teddy. Some excellent suggestions made, especially the out of sight out of mind thing. I have a Seiko SARY057 that I used to really enjoy. I’ve since acquired better watches and fallen out of love with it. I put it in a drawer for months to see if I’d miss it. I haven’t, so looking to sell it or passing it on to a friend or family member. Perhaps someone can get more enjoyment out of it than I.

This is a great way to think about culling any collection of value, no matter what it comprises.
On your first point Teddy, I’ve gone through a lot of watches (I seem to get bored after 6-12 months) and find that when I start changing straps to make the watch feel different…that’s a sign that it’s going to go! It’s a plaster over my feelings toward the watch.
Then again, maybe I’m just fickle 🤣
What I'm curious is if I have an automatic with third party movement, like an ETA or Selita would it be worth the money if I got it serviced before selling it (especially if I never serviced it before). Would I get more than I spend?

I don't have any urge to sell any of my watches. But I only have lower dollar Seiko watches, SNK's, DressKX, and land tortoises. I also have my fathers 1970's Seiko 5 UFO, and my grandfathers Longines dress watch from the early 70's. Oh I also have a Skagen from back when Skagen was cool. I don't think I would get enough money for any of them to be worth it. I have also lost the urge to buy more watches. I went a little crazy the first 3 months of the hobby buying (8) new watches. I guess some people are after the thrill of getting something new. Then it makes sense to sell to make room for the next one.

omg. I sold my first Swiss watch to make room for a higher end purchase and now I friggin miss it. But I also got out of the hobby for a while because I was so ashamed of my affinity for watches

Giving your watch as a gift is the true spirit of a watch enthusiast vs. flippers who only care about money.
I sold a Hamilton Below Zero a few years ago and regretted it soon after. However, I found one in an outlet centre last year and could not contain my excitement when buying it. Different colour dial, but that was irrelevant, I had my watch back!! Now, I do not think I would sell any of my 'proper' watches. Fossils, Swatch, G shocks, sure, but there are 6 watches I would never sell.

Love all of your videos. I have four Swiss I need to sell that are $1000 to $2000. How do i go about selling them? All in perfect condition with box and papers.
If you’re trying to maximize return, private selling will be the way but this is way more involved compared to selling to a dealer. That said, most dealers only want luxury watches since there is not much room to turn a profit otherwise. Online marketplaces like eBay are probably the easiest/fastest way to sell independently but the fees are going to eat into your sale. There are some good buy/sell groups out there that might be good to investigate as you won’t have to worry about fees the same way. Getting a wire for the amount is preferred but as a first time seller with no past transactions people will have some hesitancy doing that. If you use something like PayPal, don’t have it be friends or family transaction as you are not as protected. I hope this helps!

You do need to thinking twice before buying a watch that isn't the one you really want, especially if the intent is to upgrade to the other watch later. It would be a shame to only be $200 short of what you wanted when you buy something else that you expect to upgrade from just to find out you will now need $400 to make the move because the value of the interim watch is lower than expected. This is where quartz watches are nice. You can get a great looking affordable watch maybe in a different style that you can wear daily while still saving for the one you really want in your collection. Giving away that quartz watch might also be easier while still encouraging new watch enthusiasts.
my oldest watch is 15 years old! i may be abnormal but when i buy a watch i buy it for life, unless i become desperate for money ( god forbid) and would have to sell all of my watches
Clearly you don’t dive. No diver is going to use a “dive” watch. Real divers use time pieces with built in depth gauges. Numerals you can actually see under water. Ascent rate and nitrogen absorption trackers. Illumination for deeper dives. As a diver I’m not using a frat boy toy divers watch. Same with “pilots” watch. Useful in 1940 but just jewelry now no matter how well made. I love the engineering in mechanical watches. Would have a tourbillon if I could afford one. But if my life depended on accurate time keeping (diving or flying) I want high tech not romance.

Unless you hate it…its easier to keep. Or, you can gift a watch. Between kids and grandkids, I have plenty of takers when I tire of a watch.
The only watches I wont gift or wear, are poor quality Citizen’s or Seiko’s. Where the alignment is off and it’s not worth any amount of money to make it right. I realize some folks think its charming. I think poor quality is a disgrace. If your manufacturing and selling watches, do a good job, or stop doing it.
