They native to Riverine Mountainous areas of my home South Africa. Hence the epithet Cape (Cape of Good Hope) in the common name. I don't grow them or tend to avoid them because to me the leaves look like dandelion leaves when they arent in flower. But to each its own. I think i prefer their prettier cousin genera (African Voilets). The leaves look pretty on those even when not in flower. I think it's because they remind me of velvet. You can treat them exactly as you do an African voilet. INTERESTING FACT: They grow only on South/South West facing crevices in rocks. So in the northern hemisphere you should place them on a North/North west facing windowsill/wall. They will love their lives.
I thought the same thing about the leaves looking like weeds. But the blooms are really pretty!
Very interesting, thank you for sharing all the information! 👌💕
@@heatherw.2751 The Dandelion is not a weed, is edible and has medicinal properties. It is a member of the Sunflower and aster family. Just an FYI in case you weren't aware.
I love the way dandelion look! I even have white flowering and pink flowering dandelion. They help break up soil, and bring nutrients from deep down. I use the rpots for teas, and chop and drop the plants for free fertilizer and mulch!
I do also love an AV, have two in my utility room, and we rarely see streptocarpus here, besides hobby nurseries, which are few and far between here in Ohio. Cheers!
@@angelarios8305I try to tell people that! Leave the dandelions! I'm spreading pink ones and white ones around my property.
Any plant can be a weed though, but we should stop calling every plant in our lawn other than grass a weed. Our lawns provide some of the earliest, and most abundant, flowers for our pollinators.
Happy Good Friday Laura and family.........remembering our Saviour's sacrificial death today.
Hey! Love the channel and I need to share the experience I had today. My husband and I were out to lunch on Good Friday. Just a hole in the wall place…I had on my ‘Garden Answer’ T-shirt and 2 people came to our table to gush over how they loved the channel as well! Huge fans! Love you! Happy Easter! ❤
I saw streptocarpus and read it as streptococcus. Guess that’s the lab tech in me. Thought everyone was sick for a second. Glad that’s not the case. Have a great day.
I did the same thing! I do insurance billing, so it's a word I see occasionally.
Same here! 😂😂
Yep! I did that same double-take! 😁
So did I! We have a sick house so my first thought is always strep. LOL
I also thought streptococcus. Both words are greek.
Morning Everyone 🪴🐇🐣🐇🪴
Good Morning!🪻I have 4 Streptocarpus & I love them! I have them in the perfect spot, so they can show their color when in bloom! Last Fall, I transplanted my husband's grandmother's peony bushes that his Dad had in his yard. We lost my Father in Law a couple of years ago, so I moved all his Knock Out roses & those keepsake peony bushes to my gardens so I can continue their care! 🥰🪻🌸🪴🌿
What a wonderful way to continue a gardening legacy!
I am so excited about being in my garden with my new kneeling pad! Only two more feet of snow to melt. Whoo hoo!😂
That's so funny. Think of all the pretty things you can plant with the vernalization period the cold provides. I cant grow anything that requires such. Or I have to place it in the fridge and risk rot
Have you ever thought of creating a wooded area on one of your new plots? Not just the edges but the whole area. I’m imagining a forest with one type of tree (birch, maple, oak), fields of bluebells and bulbs underneath the trees and a path going right through the center. Would be nice having something on your property that looks wild and natural but is strategically thought out :)
Yes, a fern studded woodland with a small babbling brook connecting to your pond!
That's a great idea !
That forsythia is just mesmerizing with the peonies charm. Both colors stand out. Beautiful.
Good morning all have a safe and blessed day ❤️
Love that you mention the fall color of the perennials. It is often an overlooked feature of these spring blooming plants.
Yes to starting up garden tours!! 😁
Yay! Garden tours! But I wished you had tours twice a month instead, especially in spring when everything happens so fast.
when i lived in alaska the seasons of fall and spring happened so fast we called them "sprung" and "fell".
Yes!!! I would love to see the bulbs that are now flowering!
@@VickieCarla I’m from north of Sweden originally and there we say that we have 8 seasons. Right now it’s springwinter.
Holding on tight to that zone 6 😂. I don’t blame you. !! Great content everyday!!!
Good morning Garden Answer family. Have a wonderful Easter 🐣 Day.
Yes, I loved meeting those new type of plants from Africa! Strepocarpus.
I must say, your proficiency with that auger is in top form!!! Makes life much more pleasant.
You're planting peonies and lilac make me reminiscent of my grandma and the streptocarpus are lovely.
It’s 4am, still up, & Laura is making me move my violet in southern staircase window.😂My other one had buds & blooms in that window & I tossed it mos. ago when discovered COVERED in mealies(?). Tiny white aphids. Thanks for helpful reminder! no direct sun…
Thank you! Yes, tours can begin soon!
I love when you also say the common name to plants , thank you .Every time I see you using your kneeling pad I wonder where mine is I ordered when you first came out . Trying to patiently wait 😅.
Hi Laura, could you do a Spring garden tour in early April even if it's partial , just to see the progression, that would be great! Also would it not be wonderful to eventually also have a deep purple lilac and a white one in the "Dirtland" border....in a few years, you could do beautiful lilac bouquets in all 3 colors...and the fragrance!
Good morning, quick question? I’m hearing your state has introduced some new laws about having farm animals on your land and laws about well water ! Will this affect your beautiful property?
Those plants are so beautiful, buy my eyes keep going to that greenstalk behind you , it's absolutely beautiful
Love seeing your yellow forsythia in bloom and that pop of color around. As you were planting the peony all I could think was Thank you Aaron for thinking ahead . Tilling and bringing in all that wonderful dirt at the beginning. Wow sure does make planting easier.
I think I will I will go look for some pretty flowers to pot inside. Have a wonderful Easter!
Love Your videos. Husband and I watch them together in the morning on the weekend❤
Oooohhh those peony's are going to be beautiful. I already can't remember the name of the (almost primroses)😊😊 are sooo pretty. Perfect in the Hartley. I'm sooo excited to see what my coreopsis does. It's my first time growing it. Thank you again for an amazing video. See you in the next one. 💜💜💜🌿🌿
What on earth is a pionese? Lmao. Do you mean peonies (peony)?
@@nashnash7997 yes that is what I meant. Auto correct changed the spelling. I changed the spelling.
Cape primrose 😊
@@breik8183 thank you. You are amazing...
Good morning from Delaware Garden Answer friends.
Good afternoon from Michigan 🐢
Loving your green house so colorful love the names of the primrose blue ice strawberry ice ❤ thanks take care momma Laura
Same weather as here this week.
Just outside of London UK 🙂
Everything’s gonna look beautiful it already does but it’s really gonna look beautiful when everything starts blooming another great video. Thank you.❤
Laura, it would be beautiful and fragrant if you planted a drift of lilacs. They are spectacular in bloom and would make an impact.
Good Friday Morning 🐣💕🐰🪴🌿🌞
The plants are so beautiful in the Hartley!!! If I were you I would be sitting in the Hartley for hours just enjoying all the views and enjoying the peace and quite. You have such a Gorgeous place and I know you have worked so hard to make it that way!!! Love your video's and your Beautiful Family!!! Happy Easter!!!🐣🌻🌹🏵🌷🌻🌺🐇🐰🙏
6.40 Really beautiful greenhouse. I wish I had one but now in Greece it is already hot. I walk to the beach to sunbathe so you can imagine what it would be like to have one like that from March till late November. After that it would be heaven to sit inside one like it.
I ripped my lilac out because it seemed like it flowered for only 10 days of the year. Now I’m wrestling with a million suckers that want to grow, the lilac is a pretty tenacious plant.
Beautiful plants. Beautiful garden. Looking forward to seeing everything awake and in bloom.
Remember with streps we follow Aaron with the "plant 'em high" philosophy!!!!
Gorgeous peonies! So excited to see a tour of the spring color!💚💜💛💕💙
I think I’ve mentioned this before here on this channel, but in Central California along the coast, impatience bloom 365 days a year. I just moved away and my impatience plant always had flowers on it for 10 1/2 years!
Lots beautiful plants you put in your garden today just love peonies and lilac. What beautiful pop of colour that will be.
Getting more excited about the garden this season 👏👏🌿🌿🌼🌷
The Harley looks beautiful with all the plants and the flower pots look very nice😊😊 God bless😊
Thanks for introducing these little beauties. Cape Plumbago loves our zone 9b climate in California. I wish I could find the Cape Primrose.
I can't wait for the garden tours! It will be glorious! 😀🥰
To everyone who wants to plant coral charm peonies and are above zone 4, I have them growing in the arctic area of Norway. Give them good drainage and consistent snow covrage and they will grow just fine
Greetings from lebanon 🇱🇧, always waiting patiently for the (hey guys ,how is it going)😊😊
Lovely seeing all the Spring beauty! I am going to cut a few flowering quince branches, and some Hellebore flowers for our Easter table. Happy Easter to all your family and all the GA family!
Hi Laura 🌺 . Wonderful and pretty plants . The lilac and the peonies are going to be amazing and you can plant blue hydrangeas along the white fence . Happy Easter to you and your family. 🌻✝️🌻
Have you ever thought about putting a lounge chaise or hammock in the greenhouse? That would be a happy spot for a nap when it’s raining. 😂
Just amazing how green it’s looking around your home! Those streptocarpus are just sweet!
came here to say the same thing! Love seeing how the lawn is greening up and everything is just looking so good!
Those plants are beautiful.. question? What is in the green stalk behind you??
My medical mind read this as "streptococcus" and I was like what is Laura up to???😂
LTC case manager here - I thought the same thing! 😂
Yay for upcoming garden tours!! Looking forward to those!
when i was young and first moved to Alaska in 1986, i spent my whole gardening budget of $125 on two large-ish peonies (i was in sticker shock after previously gardening in Seattle area for 9 years) and was so proud as they took hold and began to flourish. then one day i saw a moose in the yard and my peonies were stubs. they didn't recover from the moose attack. now i am in central Florida and they aren't rated for our 9b-recently-rezoned-to-10a zone. I am looking forward to watching yours grow!!
I'm also in a Zone 10 but a Mediterranean Climate, in South Africa. I want to grow peonies too? I've never seen anyone here do it, but I've seen people throw ice around the peonies in winter. Does that work to make them bloom?
Beautiful video with an interesting variety of projects. Laura is having such success growing geraniums from seed. The geranium blooms in the Hartley are charming.
I've never seen those first plants before, very pretty.
Happy Easter to you and your family.
God is good, all day, everyday!
Laura, your geraniums are gorgeous! Another wonderful gardening day in Indiana and temps hit the 70's.
💗 Wow! Its are so beautiful and bright plants. 🥰 Thank you for telling so interestingly about these plants and their care.🌱🪴 Great video! 👍
Omg ! I have one that bloomed so profusely last summer but I didn't know what it was . It was given to me by a neighbour who was moving!
So in love with how your property is evolving, love watching the process and the joy you have in gardening! Do you have any tips on how to transplant Peonies?
It looks like I lost my peonies during this winter's ice storm😥 Yours look so healthy. Will be looking to replace. The color of yours is beautiful. Love peonies as they look so dainty, feminine.
As always enjoyed your video. It's fun to watch you plant. Have a wonderful day..
such pretty flowers!! love how the Hartley is such a warm and inviting place to be... cannot wait for the tours this spring! so much to see.. 🥰❤thanks for the video!! 🥰❤
Don’t forget your Peonies frame.
They are absolutely gorgeous! Good morning
Your memory for the names of what is planted is amazing! Is streptocarus the common name? Have never heard of this plant but It is beautiful
I hope you can have some gardening with Laura outside with just nature sounds instead of music always kicking in as soon as she starts.
Laura, I think the one tree in front of the lilac is leaning.🤔 or my vision might be bad..lol
Those are very pretty I didn’t know you could keep those inside.
Don't forget the peony stakes! 🤗
Really like those pots too.
A beautiful garden space! I love your selection of plants that will complement one another so beautifully!
My favorite peony.
I’ve never heard of streptococcus plant all look so nice I wish I could plant peonies I’m in zone 10b in SoCal. Happy Easter to you and your family.
Good night or morning happy early Easter all 🐇 🐰 🌼 🌸
Good morning Laura and family
I'd like to mention I placed my first order from Garden Answer, a green stalk, spinner w/wheel kit yay, can't wait for it to get here.
Ahh your peonies are going to look amazing and the lilac bushe has a great bloom and the fragrance is spectacular, a bench would look really pretty out there.
Thank you for sharing, can't wait for your tours. Have a wonderful rest of the day and weekend, Have a Happy Easter to you and yours.🐇🐣
🙂👋
Never seen them before beautiful very pretty like orchids flowers x
That area is going to be so beautiful with continuous color...Love it
Thank you for talking about these streptocarpus. I had bought 2 last year and kept them in my living room away from the windows. I tried to not over water or under water. I didn’t fertilize so I think that’s why I didn’t get a lot of flowering. But one did not make it and I’m not sure why. But one is still alive and I’m hoping your tips will help keep it that way! Thanks 🙏🏼
I have bought them at African violet shows and treat them the same as a African violet. Bottom water, indirect light, African violet soil.
Thank you Laura for teaching us about the Streptocarpus. I had never heard of that plant until today. Might do well here in Zone 9 N. Florida.
Have you considered planting some Australian natives out in the Dirt Lands? Protea/Banksia even some gum trees could do well there and they are beautiful for flower arrangements xx
I haven't ever seen the Streptocarpus in my area , I may have to go on a plant hunt.
Lovin' your website. Makes it so easy to buy "all the things".
Reminds me of a cottage garden on the forsythia area!
Another great video from Laura. You start my day and I'm so grateful.❤❤❤❤
Laura, HappyEaster to you and your family! Love 💕 the beautiful blooms. 😊
Peonies, and lilac, my favorite spring flowers!
I used to grow them indoors many years ago. Really a beautiful flower with very long leaves. I love them-now I wonder where to find them.
Great video. I love the peonies, i need to add a couple to my gardens
Gorgeous plants. Love them. Great little video. Love Lilacs and peony. Thanks again for sharing this with us.
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE.🐰🐰🐰🇨🇦🇨🇦 🇨🇦
I love house plant that will flower. I need to get them. The show off Forsythia that you mentioned has beautiful yellow Spring Color. Is it like that all season and into the fall?
Ooh they are gorgeous!!! I love those plants and don't see them very often for sale in stores. Love your videos and thank you for the information on care.
I’m loving the nail polish what flavor is that, lol?! Your green house is gorgeous! Happy Easter!
Everything is coming along so beautifully.
Love peonies ❤❤❤
I’ve never seen those flowers before. Would love to have a flowering house plant.
Since I am so visual, the first thing my eye was drawn to were the extra long and straggly leaves on two of your Streptocarpus plants. The blooms are gorgeous, but I would have to trim those leaves! 😉
