    Classic example of how in baseball playoff series, sometimes 1 win ends up being worth 2 wins. The Dodgers' improbable win earlier that morning (ending less than 11 hours before this game started), was still fresh in the minds of both teams and definitely had a carryover effect. Dodgers were high on life while the Mets were angry and brooding.

    This was the first of many MLB playoff series that affected my Mets rooting psyche!! Such a weird schedule back then. Game 4 was an 8:20pm Sunday night first pitch, then Game 5 was like a 12:30pm Monday first pitch! I remember the A's closing out the Red Sox the day before. What the hell was the rush? MLB would milk those prime time ratings to bits this day and age and start the next game at 8 or later for sure!
    That Scioscia homer in Game 4 was devastating. You knew deep down that was ultimately the series end! Queue overhyped Gibson-Eckserley homer that should've never happened no less than 8000 times on repeat!!
    The Mets knocked the Dodgers out in 2006 and 2015, but it still feels hollow because they never finished the job and won the World Series either of those years!

      The reason this game started so early is because it was played on a scheduled off day. Game 3, scheduled for Friday night, was rained out. Sunday night, which was the epic 5-hour game, was supposed to have been Game 5 and not Game 4. But because of the rainout, they re-scheduled G5 for noon Eastern on Monday because there would be no travel day between G5 and G6 and the teams had to fly across the country back to LA that night.

      If the Mets won the NLCS, Im not sure if they would've won against the Oakland A's with the bash bros and Eckersley and Dave Stewart.
      It would likely end in 6 or 7 most likely.

    • @charleshendren3961
      @charleshendren3961 Рік тому

      The scheduling was like this because of game 3 being rained out on the previous Friday night. The rain out took away the travel day that was supposed to be on Monday. So the played game 5 early on Monday and then had to turnaround and immediately fly across country to play game 6 the following night in LA

    Jeffries getting hit by the batted ball in the 8th was one of most confounding and dumb plays I have ever seen. It was hit slowly and the view of the ball was completely in front of him. No excuse to have it hit him.

      I had totally forgotten about this. I was 11 when I watched this game live. I remembered Gibson's homer and remembered him getting hurt late in the game, but I didn't remember too many details about how the Mets came back and made it close, and I definitely didn't remember their threat in the 8th inning. Griffin was going to have no play there and it would have been bases loaded for sure. Then Holton came in and did a tremendous job. He sure had a helluva curveball.

      The game was just so different then. Hit-and-runs were so common on 2-1 counts, or, really, a lot of hitters' counts. Stolen bases were so common that a guy like Kevin McReynolds stole 20+. Heck, Franklin Stubbs stole 11, and he didn't even play regularly. And, of course, no shifts!

    I am getting real sick of McCarver calling out Kirk Gibson, several times in this series, of making BAD BASEBALL PLAYS for beating out bunt singles. Hey Tim, if you are still alive, do you realize at all that when Gibson makes it to first base with no one on, and then steals 2nd base, as he has in this series, then that is like hitting a frickin DOUBLE?!!
    Kirk Gibson was the NL MVP for 1988, OK? Show a little respect!
    What is this all about McCarver? Still sulking about Detroit defeating the Cardinals in the 1968 World Series?
