Well, aside from the fees to join and also to maintain your membership (they are called "dues", I understand, in the USA...I'm an English Mason) which can be several hundred dollars, there is a lot of charity work involved, which naturally involves cash as well as time. To pay your dues would put strain on the family budget, which in turn would cause tension and unease in the family and we do not want that.

Look online for lodges in your area. Visit a lodge, and speak to the members. I did that in 2018, one of the best decisions I've ever made.
