I think this song is genuinely perfect. It perfectly conveys the sorrow and anger that Angelica feels after losing Alexander. Renee does a fantastic job at conveying that emotion without it being said. The tension in her voice is incredible. Truly the best that broadway has to offer

Also for a lot of singers in musical theatre, the aim isn't just to perform a perfect vocal performance. They have to change and adapt their voice to portray the story (hence the difference between Phillipa and Renee) and they are also moving around to further tell the story. Sometimes they may change the way they sing so that is no longer a perfectly rounded and polished sound, but rather an amazing vocal performance that has a storyline
I think a part about the "May You Always" is because she wants to cry but can't so she switches to head to kind of indicate that instead of staying mixed
I like that this song has some slight imperfections in vocals. This is an incredibly emotional song and it makes me believe the performance more when there are imperfections that can be attributed to holding back tears or intense emotion. Reminds me of Anne Hathaway's performance for 'I Dreamed a Dream' when her voice cracked from sheer emotion. But that's a personal preference of mine. It's something I love about live performances.
I saw the show live twice but when I first saw the film and close ups of Renee, those breaks in her voice made me weep. They are intentional and serve a very specific purpose.
I think, personally, it's because of these imperfections that I prefer hearing it live rather than the studio version. It just hits so much harder to have the emotions in tact.
the whole musical is master class, but this song, everytime i was Renee perfromance, i get shivers, i've watched this, been to london show and the dublin show, and no one captures the character like her, by watching her you can FEEL the emotions, i can watch it with no sound and still feel every emotion, and then her vocal control is just next level

I like that you have obvious experience in vocals, but as some others explained there is a lot of character development relayed by the way the cast sings their songs. I feel like you are not completely in the mindset of these being characters and them telling a story. It has been said that nothing in the show is accidental, and that everything has a meaning, the music is a big factor in how the story is told (aside from the vocals). It is obviously perfectly fine to have a preference for the vocal style in Satisfied over Helpless, but to not acknowledge the reasons for the choices, makes your comments come off more as disparaging Philipa Soo for the character choices that were made. It may be a good idea to do a full reaction to the entire musical in one video and then doing individual breakdown videos of the vocal styles in each song, that way you are more well informed and can give your opinion on not just the vocals but what the vocals mean to the story; especially since vocal training is not only how to do certain things but knowing why they are being done.
@JJV1224 True and like I said theres nothing wrong with having a preference, the only slight issue I have is that her opinion seems uninformed because she outright says she hasn't seen the show or watched the entire movie, and didn't address the plethora of "her vocal style is characterization" comments on the helpless video.
@JJV1224 And that's fine. Im not saying she can't have an opinion or a preference. Im just saying that not even acknowledging the main feedback from another video and not trying to broaden her own comprehension of a piece of art she is analyzing (albeit loosely) doesn't lend credence on her expertise in the musical theater corner of music. I was simply giving a suggestion for a possible better way to plan out informed and helpful videos for those who want to learn about the vocals of Hamilton, not trying to force her to change anything.
@JJV1224 I think it does. Being a vocal coach is kind of the hook to her reaction besides it being a Hamilton reaction. She obviously has the knowledge of vocal training and gives good insight on the songs I've seen her react to but she doesn't seem to do much when it comes to the story and how the vocals tell a story on their own. Like I said in my original comment, there are two very basic aspects of vocals in musicals (Hamilton in particular), and that's the How and Why. She does a great job explaining the How but doesn't go into the Why, even though they are always linked, so her reactions and info seem very surface level. Labeling yourself a vocal coach in a video gives a sense of expertise to everything you say about vocals, in the same way Dr Mike can react to a Greys Anatomy episode or Legal Eagle can give commentary on Legally Blonde and their insight can be viewed as a fact or lesson to be learned. The same thing is happening here, which isn't a bad thing, but it just feels like she could delve deeper and make the videos more meaningful and have more information if she at the very least watched the entire movie. The optics of not addressing VERY common comments about these songs in particular and still continuing to make the same statement those comments are referring to can come off as her not caring about the art, the fan base, or her viewers who said it; though I doubt this is the case. All in all, as someone who loves Hamilton, I would love to see more in depth reviews and break downs of these songs from her because she obviously knows what shes talking about and I feel I could actually learn something. I feel that adding the analysis aspect to her videos could set her apart from the other reaction channels and help her in the long run on UA-cam as well. That doesn't mean she will or needs to change anything, I was simply giving suggestions.
Katie Zellers I completely agree with you. Its not like its a song just of a random album, all the songs go together and tell the story and ignoring that just rubs me the wrong way. Especially because its an intentional choice to portray eliza’s personality and her view on the situation vs angelica’s cynicism and hurt and as they develop as people their voices change
Agree it may help to do the whole musical, since a lot of the songs (b/c it’s Lin Manuel’s style) have interconnected themes and phrases and the tones switch up because they match the other song the phrase come from.
Here are a few suggestions of Hamilton songs that you could react to: - Wait For It. - The Room Where It Happens. - One Last Time. - Hurricane. - Burn. - It's Quiet Uptown. But, make sure to watch the entire musical before listening to some of these songs. Major spoilers in most of them, mostly It's Quiet Uptown and Burn have spoilers that you would want to avoid before watching the musical fully. (Mainly because the emotional impact is way better watching it entirely for the first time.) I would love to see your opinion on these songs. They are all really good and show a range of emotion and have a lot of different characters throughout them. They are also some of the most story-driven songs.
To be fair you can judge Philippa on the Fallon remote show... which was a fun light hearted..not the actual musical itself where she is singing full out
5:14 what they should’ve said is that Eliza is supposed to be more of a suppressed character if that makes any sense? She’s meant to not be put out there as much, which is why Burn is such a big deal because it’s the only time during the whole musical that she see Eliza on stage by herself. I don’t know if this helped clarify anything, I hope it did.
Fun fact: when you see the stage moving clock wise time is going backwards like in the beginning of the song where it says rewind their going back to helpless the song before so the stage will be moving clock wise then towards the end it’s moving counter clockwise so their not back in the present
This song is a big monster but she…she really is something else. Huge voice, great acting, always on point for the moment. Renee and Jonathan Groff really owned all the others Hamilton’s characters.
If you liked Renee singing, you should react to her part in 'The Reynolds Phamplet'... she's has a small part in this song that alludes to the lyrics from 'Satisfied', but it's simply amazing!
I found your channel a few weeks ago looking for Hamilton reactions, and I stumbled upon your Helpless video and thought it was great. Now UA-cam recommended me this video and I have to say, I am loving how into this you are. You seem so genuinely enthusiastic about Hamilton's songs. I wouldn't be surprised if you were just as enthusiastic about the other songs, but even so. IDK how you manage it, but one can visibly see both your reaction to the music AND the performance at the same time, when most people only manage to convey their reactions to one or the other, in their facial expressions at least. That's impressive. These two videos I've seen alone shows this channel is several cuts above the other reaction channels, which just stare blankly at what they watch. Well done.
I think that nasal thing in “Helpless” might’ve been intentional, if only to serve as a contrast with this song as “Satisfied” is basically a retelling of “Helpless” and the prior song, “A Winter’s Ball,” from the perspective of Renee’s character, Angelica. That’s just my two cents on the matter.

I think you should react to: - wait for it - the room where is happens - burn - say no to this - it’s quiet uptown - who lives who died who tells your story
I really enjoyed your video and tips! I will say, Philippa Soo's singing style in Helpless is very indicative of her character just as Renee's. I do understand your notes about both, I just thought I'd add this to the conversation.
Just found you today. I'm really glad you decided to keep the first video! It is great to see your reaction and also watch your vocal tips! Subscribed! Let's binge now!!!
I love that you can hear the company singing a winters ball/the beginning of helpless in the background.. like the lengths they went through to reverse and redo all the parts from helpless is insane
Good analysis and I know this is an analysis of the singing, but you didn't respond to what the song was really about - the emotional part of the song: that Angelica is singing about how she gave up Alexander for her sister. This is a total bombshell that is revealed only in this song and I would have loved it if you had responded to that too, if only momentarily. It's what makes the song so heartbreaking, especially the last 'To the groom! To the bride!' part
You'll have to watch the whole musical to understand the slight vocal choices, its not a matter of imcompetence its a matter of character development. Algelica being the confident eldest sister make sense for her to be up and forward while Eliza being the naive overlooked overshadowed little sister is the trusting and kind person who hides behind her sister
I have to wonder if what you’re noticing between this and Helpless is the difference in experience. Pippa Soo is pretty new in this - fresh out of school. Renée is a seasoned Broadway pro - she’s a classically trained pro with a huge resume, who is known for huge vocal chops. She knows exactly how to wield that weapon, whereas Pippa is still learning how to best use hers.
The fact that satisfied and helpless are both quick-paced songs but are sung differently shows the contrast in the sisters. Angelica is the more outgoing, charming and witter sister and Eliza is the reserved and happy and shy sister

I love your reaction video! I love to sing and if I could have found a voice coach like you who loves what she does and makes it joyful....I would probably be a great singer. Even at 65 I still believe my singing could be better! Keep it up! You're awesome!
it would be great if you reacted to the version of helpless from the film as it does phillipas voice more justice than the zoom call with the roots, also the visuals are amazing you will notice that the choreography is the same as in satisfied but in reverse as these two songs are back to back! also, i think you would really enjoy reacting to the harmonies in the schuyler sisters, or even better make a series reacting to all the songs in hamilton!! great video :)
musicality details are part of the story- from lyrical phrasings to chord progressions to vocal techniques. there are reasons for certain vocal techniques used that way. watch the show. there are themes every where as the show goes on like this tune come back a little bit in act 2.

If you were wondering about that scene where she wasn’t singing it was actually the choreography for helpless back wards because they’re rewinding to when Eliza met Alexander from angelicas perspective , and if you’re wondering why she sped up it’s because it’s supposed to represent the speed of angelicas mind going 1000 miles a second
Yeah. I realized that later on :) We actually had a Hamilton watch party a few weeks ago as well. We've been doing it for 2 weeks now. You should join us!
Not a singer but I stumbled across this video and found it really interesting. Also want to say, I love that your singing is so powerful your little mic couldn't handle it XD Glad you posted anyway and the sound problems didn't detract from my enjoyment at all :)
So I’m German, and if you don’t know, German is the only language that Hamilton has been translated to. Sadly you can’t watch it anymore, but the singer we had for Angelica was amazing. You should listen to it on Spotify. The song is called „zufrieden“.
It’s so open because of the character, Angelica is the oldest and the wittiest, she’s more educated and well spoken than any woman in the musical so you have to feel it when she sings
Just seeing this video now but I love this musical. The song A Winter’s Ball is a prelude to give background on what is about to happen. Helpless is sung from Eliza’s perspective so she’s infatuated and in love so it makes sense that Phillipa has that more nasal sound. With Satisfied, it’s from Angelica’s perspective. The part where they say rewind they actually rewind the choreography and then start the whole choreography of Helpless but it’s what Angelica sees during that song. Which is why Renee has such a fuller tone because she has that remorse of hindsight.
I'm so glad you did my favorite song! But if you see the choreography of Helpless and Satisfied they are similar! (They get similiar after Hamilton finishes his lines in Satisfied)
The choreography of Helpless and Satisfied are practically the same, lol. It’s just that in the first part of Satisfied they go backwards then afterwards they just do the choreography from Helpless all over again.
I didn't see your reaction to helpless, but I think the difference between this two performers relates to their character. When I first saw the musical, I saw Eliza (Philippa Soo) more (in a way) shy, reserved and Angelica (Elise) the opposite of her sister, more open. I think that's why Eliza sounds more closed singing her song, and Angelica opens more in her song. I really don't know, it's just the impression I got when I saw the musical 🤷🏽♀️ Loved your reaction to this performance, and love seeing your reaction to little mix as well ❤️
Yes!!! I love this song and live for Renee Elise Goldsberry's ah vowel. So beautifully shaped! I loved you catching it each time. I would love to see you react to Philippa Soo singing Burn. Just a note, and it’s possible someone’s already told you this, Hamilton has very little dialogue in it. It pretty much is one song bleeding into the next and circling back on itself. Reacting to the whole thing may be your best move and then just kind of sectioning out what you reacted to afterwards. just a thought. I hope you have a great day.

I think, personally, it's because of these imperfections that I prefer hearing it live rather than the studio version. It just hits so much harder to have the emotions in tact.
Oh that second "to your union" with that camera angles gives me chills!
Wow I didnt notice the slight crack in her voice when she sings, “She’d be lying.” It’s very slight. You have an excellent ear.
the whole musical is master class, but this song, everytime i was Renee perfromance, i get shivers, i've watched this, been to london show and the dublin show, and no one captures the character like her, by watching her you can FEEL the emotions, i can watch it with no sound and still feel every emotion, and then her vocal control is just next level
You should do “you’ll be back” next Jonathan Greoff’s spit take it to DIE for

Your ability to recreate the notes almost perfectly from only hearing it once was incredible. Time to subscribe I guess.
Thank you :) We've got tons of videos for you to check out and hope to see you on the others :)
Y’all need to chill. I’m a huge Phillipa stan and I love how she sang Helpless however stop being mean to this girl for her opinions.
Here are a few suggestions of Hamilton songs that you could react to:
- Wait For It.
(Mainly because the emotional impact is way better watching it entirely for the first time.)
I would love to see your opinion on these songs.
The best part of this song is that the scene is literally a re-creation of the Helpless scene.
solangelo lover💜🎶🎶💜
The way she hits “Union” at the end is amazing. Crazy it’s also right as Eliza kisses Alexander
Her: *confused*. Me: you had to be there 🤷🏽♀️
I found your channel a few weeks ago looking for Hamilton reactions, and I stumbled upon your Helpless video and thought it was great.
Well done.
I love this , as I want to learn how to sing , I got a lot of information from this video Thankyou
You have the same reaction I had. I love the open sound too!!! She has the best voice in the entire cast. Her and Chris Jackson is phenomenal.
Also this is the 2nd fastest song in Hamilton, Guns and Ships is the fastest with Daveed rapping at 6.3 words per second. You should react to it
Who else was here just to see how she reacts to “TO YOUR UNIOOON!!!” at the end.
Thi is so cool
Thanks!
Sending a 🥰virtual hug🥰
“Burn” by Phillipa Soo is soooo good! I def recommend reacting to that one. Also “ Wait for it” and “One last time “ they’re so good!

With helpless Phillipa was singing with an AirPod at her house or office or somewhere. This is the broadway pro shot! We STAN Phillipa Soo!
I love it! I recommend wait for it from Hamilton too

I think you should react to:
- wait for it
- the room where is happens
- burn
- say no to this
- it’s quiet uptown
- who lives who died who tells your story
I think this is the best song from Hamilton.
“Silence is it’s own music”🎶 I love that ❣️
Love your reactions, please do more Hamilton.
It’s also important to remember that Renee has at least 15 years of experience on Philippa 😊
I am LOVING your videos, you are so fun (I’ve watched like 20 of them in the last 2 hours) but your ads in the middle are driving me NUTS!
I’m obsessed with your videossss
+Alexandre Creão hoooray!! 🎉🥂
Best song Lin wrote. PERIOD.
fun fact: in the fastest part of the song renee raps 5 words per second!
I can't wait for you to react to burn, the raw emotion in Eliza's voice is amazing!
I love this So Much!!! Renee Elise Goldsberry Deserves Another TONY...just SO BEAUTIFUL! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️
I believe Renée (in this Cast) probably has the most prior experience.
I agree, but sometimes it's just the tonality and what people prefer. They are both talented, but I do prefer one over the other.
The fact that satisfied and helpless are both quick-paced songs but are sung differently shows the contrast in the sisters. Angelica is the more outgoing, charming and witter sister and Eliza is the reserved and happy and shy sister
I will never NAWT bawl my eyes out to Hamilton ❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭
You should react to you watching Hamilton. Maybe in a bunch of separate chunks

I love your reaction video! I love to sing and if I could have found a voice coach like you who loves what she does and makes it joyful....I would probably be a great singer. Even at 65 I still believe my singing could be better! Keep it up! You're awesome!
Wow, thank you!
I just stumbled across this channel and I LOVE IT!!!! This is everything I didn't know I needed
it would be great if you reacted to the version of helpless from the film as it does phillipas voice more justice than the zoom call with the roots, also the visuals are amazing you will notice that the choreography is the same as in satisfied but in reverse as these two songs are back to back! also, i think you would really enjoy reacting to the harmonies in the schuyler sisters, or even better make a series reacting to all the songs in hamilton!! great video :)
Why does literally every single song from this musical make me emotional
I literally never cry wtf
I love how excited you are in this whole video, its honestly so cool to see your energy
Aw thanks! Sky Love 🥰
musicality details are part of the story- from lyrical phrasings to chord progressions to vocal techniques. there are reasons for certain vocal techniques used that way. watch the show. there are themes every where as the show goes on like this tune come back a little bit in act 2.
This was literally my wedding song. Though my wife and I took slightly different meaning to apply to ourselves.
The reason Phillips's more nasal like is because that's her characters voice, the middle sister a little younger but not as young as Jasime (Peggy)
this song makes me cry every single time, it's so tragic
OH MY GOD please react to Naya Rivera singing don’t rain on my parade on glee ITS SO GOOD AND THE NOTES SHE HITS ARE INCREDIBLE

Miranda uses silence so well through out the musical. You feel here and there In the first act, much more in the second act.
Hamilton is my favorite musical ever so happy you reacted to this
San_yeah✨🥰🥰✨
Not a singer but I stumbled across this video and found it really interesting. Also want to say, I love that your singing is so powerful your little mic couldn't handle it XD Glad you posted anyway and the sound problems didn't detract from my enjoyment at all :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow!. I had no idea about your channel. I will become a regular viewer. I love Broadway and want to learn more. Keep up the great work.
First time on this channel. You are an absolute delight!
First video I saw from your channel, totally loved it, Subscribed!
I absolutely love how great you look on the videos! Always with good colors for you!!! Best regards from 🇧🇷 !
So I’m German, and if you don’t know, German is the only language that Hamilton has been translated to. Sadly you can’t watch it anymore, but the singer we had for Angelica was amazing. You should listen to it on Spotify. The song is called „zufrieden“.
you should react to "Congratulations" is a deleted song from Hamilton, and Renee's voice is beautiful
It’s so open because of the character, Angelica is the oldest and the wittiest, she’s more educated and well spoken than any woman in the musical so you have to feel it when she sings
Absolutely, Love your reaction and analysis. Can’t wait for you to see the whole show.
Let’s just watch you react to Hamilton Bc it’s that good and worth it.
I’m actually not exactly sure why phillipa sings like that, but I like it. I think it’s a styling choice, like shakira or something.
💜🎶🎶💜
The choreography of Helpless and Satisfied are practically the same, lol. It’s just that in the first part of Satisfied they go backwards then afterwards they just do the choreography from Helpless all over again.
@@hanaeve__ yep! :)
I really don't know, it's just the impression I got when I saw the musical 🤷🏽♀️
Loved your reaction to this performance, and love seeing your reaction to little mix as well ❤️
I love your breakdowns of how she's performing this, it really gives a better understanding and I love appreciation to the craft
Adalexen The Time Traveling Unicorn💜🎶🎶💜
Yes!!! I love this song and live for Renee Elise Goldsberry's ah vowel. So beautifully shaped! I loved you catching it each time. I would love to see you react to Philippa Soo singing Burn. It's not my favorite song of the musical, but the placement is so different from Helpless. Also, check out Wait For It with Leslie Odom Jr. Another fabulous singer in this cast.

I think the more nasal placement in helpless is supposed to be more of a character choice so we can see how different the two sisters are looking at helpless and satisfied. Also you can hear the growth in Eliza’s character when Philipa Soo sings burn.
She's doing the push because her character is supposed to be emotionally pained. She's hurt because she has to give up the one she wants.
Ooooh thanks!
you should definetely watch "burn"! the song is amazing!
