I bought a Swiza D-04 a couple of years ago. The knife has seen some improvements since. The most important improvement has been the bottle opener. The bottom part was excessively long and would go into the bottleneck too deep, easily breaking the bottleneck. I broke three beer bottles before I retired this function once and for all on this knife. The Phillips drive is no longer as pointy, which is another good improvement. The old-style was nearly useless. They also improved the shape of the can opener, which apparently is easier to use now. I've only tried the old one and it isn't as good as the Victorinox can opener either. They've added a hole to attach a lanyard, which doesn't come with a ring. Finally, Swiza has added new implements to its knife line, such as a tick remover and scissors (ambitious design).
I bought a Swiza a few months ago. It's ok, but I prefer my Victorinox!
My girlfriend just bought this knife off a girl scout site. I thought it was a pretty nice well made knife. A nice little carry knife
I'm not tired of my SAK. but it's good to see competition
thanks for the review. Glad I checked in with you for the review . Almost got one
I prefer Wenger. Wish they were still an independent company.
I use a Swiza D03 for 'EDC', a Victorinox lock blade for work on game.
The Swiza is a bit smaller than the Victorinox, but I prefer the later for skinning and butchering ungulates and predators alike.
Did some work on a Mule Deer with the D03, found out that the lock for the blade can be accidentally pushed in course of skinning. This never happened with the Victorinox lock blade.
I see good and not so good in both, so I use them for different applications.
And what is $ 40 for a folder in the grand whole of things?
Many of you spend more per day on cigarettes, alcohol and drugs!
I am a big victorinox user , have been for well over 30 years ,, I've looked at these ,, I'm definitely thinking of getting one or two , good review
Take a look at the Victorinox Rangergrip 78 or 79. Nice similar rubberized scale, one hand opening with liner lock knife.
6:04 🤔😉
Great review 👍. Thanks. First knife I just don't need. I will stick with my Swiss army knife.
I first saw these at my local camping store for about $40. I guess they weren’t selling well, cuz a few weeks later they were on sale for $20. At that price I picked up a couple to try them out. They’re well made, but like you I agree there’s nothing special that’s gonna make me use one in place of my Victorinox knives. Still, they’re not bad, and I hope they keep it up and are able to give Victorinox some competition.
Curious: Can’t you get into a really nice SAK for $40? Tool-wise, this doesn’t even seem to have as much in terms of tools for EDC. I know he said he got it for bush use. But personally, I’d much rather have the full size Phillips #2 on the Tinkerer ($20) than a saw.
Agree entirely.
I tested the awl on this one with one from a Victorinox Alox model. I posted it on my channel. You're quite right in your overall review of this tool. I have the pouch as well meant for this.
You ought to try a victorinox farmer alox sometime. The handle has great traction, the blade is more robust than a standard SAK, and it has a saw. One of my favorites.
My Farmer is a favourite. And yes. The blade is very robust. The awl great. The saw outstanding for small scale sawing. I ground the flathead into a light chisel/scraper. Super pocket carry.
I'm after a new SAK because I don't dare carry my locking blade Victorinox Hunter anymore with the Uk's ever more draconian knife laws. The farmer looks a great suggestion
Have a few alox pioneer's, great secondary pocket knife or me,
Tnx. I've been eyeing these for a while. I'll stick with my SAKs.
I would give them a go.
They are much more comfortable, Victorinox are good but they were pretty plain and never did much, Wenger was a bit more innovative.
But Swiza have really been making better designs.
Look at the new line of one handed opening line.
This something people who e been wanting for ages a 3” one handed opening blade.
And Victorinox for over 100 year has still to give us that.
I would be very excited to see them distinguish themselves as a competitor by aiming for higher-end materials like titanium and supersteels--I feel like that is really the only way to exist in that market given the juggernaut of production and brand recognition that is Victorinox.
Good rveiew - I agree with you.
I have 9 Victorinox SAK's, & recently brought the Swiza D10 for something different, & I love it.
Modern styling on a timeless classic.
It's well made, to the same sort of quality as Victorinox, & it's nice that Swiza is also made in Switzerland .
The fun thing about it all, I have heard that the designer of Swiza knives was a designer who left Wenger when Victorinox bought Wenger because he didn't wanted to work for Victorinox.
Sorry what? Victorinox has perfectly fine fully metal versions of their knives. Look at their "Pioneer" collection.
Not with a locking blade. The victorinox new soldier liner lock is a joke they all have vertical play. Even the military version. Bought one 2 years ago, returned it only to find out 3 others I tried out all had it as well. If your going to install a lock make it lock! Otherwise stick to making slipjoints. Ironically Wenger Evogrip has zero play. Also Ironically Swiza is apparently old Wenger product management.
@@sedwards8503 I own two Soldier knives. No blade play. No liner lock joke. You must have an exception.
@@davidsiegel9847 of the new generation? or an old soldier slip joint? I have 2 current generation locking soldiers that came in a lot well used and one newer and one that's the hunter version. The blade play is in the the vertical not side to side. It's a known defect on all the forums. You must have lucked out. Baby that thing, unless you are like most people and it doesn't bother you. I'm simply OCD. If it's a lock the there should be no play up or down.
Thank you for the review. It does not look like something I will purchase. I love my Victorinox Swiss Army 'Huntsman' that cost less than this one and has more to offer.
From where did you get the idea that Victorinox uses Sandvik? They mostly uses 1.4110 a k a X55CrMo14.
MrAliaspostmortem Yes as I commented in these below. I believe I read it somewhere recently but I must’ve been mistaken.
victorinix uses Din 1.4110 not sandvick.
Also called x55CrMo14 comparable to 420HC for Americans
They are pretty good, bought one a few years ago. They don't have a key ring. The two I have don't have a saw. Swiss Army ones are better.
I used Victorinox for the past 50 years for EDC. In service over sea, now in the forest.
I found the Swiza #3 a bit smaller than my usual Victorinox to carry in my pocket.
Used bot models to work on game. Prefer the somewhat larger Victorinox for that but for EDC
the Swiza # 3 and 4 can't be beat.
I agree with the uncomfortable hold on the #5.
Have a do2, do4, do6. Great knives. Even numbers have phillips screw driver. Odd numbers have cork screw. Look at the victorinox ego grip, some which lock.
Hmm. Love it. But I have seen that the blade can come loose with a slight sideways movement. Cause the liner has a big gap… But I guess I love the grip and the easy way to open the tools….
I likes the Wenger models a bit better . I carry two , one in my pocket and one in a modified leather 1911 mag pouch , leathermam tool and the. big Swiss army knife with hard wood scales , bigger models all have locking blades which is a must for me , they work well for fishing and hunting , I gutted an elk with it . as a fire I carried one with a serrated main blade , works good when cutting hose in the field . I;ve been carrying a Swiss army for 35 years I look over each model that will suit my needs in the field.
It seems like most issues are solved by buying one without the saw. I like the awl much more than victorinox's small blade
The awl/reamer grinds into the main blade tip everytime it closes hence the snubbed blade. Vic puts a minute swedge on their blades to avoid this.
Good review - further:
awl breaks as a drill but super wide as a sew tool with very circular small hole
phillips sucks looks/feels awesome but in use it is a badly made inbetween size with one side cut down which makes it slip ALOT.
Decent pen knife if choose a VERY simple model and use the awl as a box opener.
My daughter has the new official Girl Scouts knife which is a Swiza D06.
Interesting video! I'll stick with my SAK backpacker. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for filming
hey Aaron... just got mine today.. there is in fact a place where you can attach a lanyard.... it's kinda tough to spot but there is a hole next to the tip of the corskrew.. not for a paracord lanyard though but kevlar string or fishing line would probably fit... create a loop and work your thick lanyard from there :-)
I’ll keep using my Victorinox knives. My current edc is the Huntsman with the traditional red scales.
i also have the D04, that's the one with the philips screw but without the saw and corkscrew, one other thing i don't like about this is the can opener, feels awkward when being used. i wanted to try this to see if it could replace the spartan that i lost... it's good but not great...
You compared a big victorinox with a small swiza. Maybe it should be compared with a small victorinox.
Nothing wrong with Voctorinox’s steel. I am no expert but had mine years and can still get a razor edge on the blades. It’s held up in terms of durability too. I was considering a non locking one of these but read feedback on forums (from those who have carried for a few years) of scale material wearing and i different customer service from the company (despite a lifetime warranty). I might try one eventually but need to price more competitively as quite expensive and not many places selling them in the UK.
I just grabbed a Moonwalk D04. I bought a D03 Tick Tool last year and I wasn't happy with it at all; the grind on the blade was utter rubbish. The D04 is a damn fine tool and, while I won't carry this one because it's basically a collector's piece, I'll grab a bigger tool with more tools. That awl is the best I've ever seen on a multi-tool.
Sad that the designers did not see the issues with the saw etc hanging out like it does, thus causing a hot spot. SAK’s are a life time investment. I have had some of mine for over 40 years of hard use and with some new scabs recently they look new. Not sure if I like the scales as well. First do not seeing them holding up well and like rubber I have seen on other knives get sticky. Secondly the blade lock release button looks like it would tear after time. Maybe do a liner lock, micarda scabs and recess the other tools and they may have a winner.
I have one really like it. Keep it in my jeans coin pocket
Design, material and cost of the Swiza make the Victorinox a better choice
I have never had an SAK slip because of its plastic scales. If you’re using it in a way that it might skip then you are probably using the wrong tool the wrong way. It’s a EDC crafts knife. It’s not a BUCK 110 for use out on the range. It’s for whittling a stick or cutting string. Simple easy tasks... not hard work.
Does it have a keychain option like the traditional Swiss Army Knife? Because I like keeping mine on my keys.
Had one. Got writ off it as fast as I could. SAK is so much better!
I'll stick with the Victorinox..but good review
Thanks for the show and tell about this version of the Swiss knife at first i was liking the color but as i watch as you explained I'm not touching it. And thanks again.
Keep cool and peace to you family and friends ✌.
Locking blade on a slipjoint is not big deal to me, was intrigued by some advertising it as 440c, but now that I know its 440a, I'll stick with my SAK especially my alox's
Thanks for the review. The pricing must have jumped as I picked one up for $26 AUD about a year ago. In USD it should be sub $20. Alternatively the Swiss multitool you show is about $85 AUD, 3 times the price.
Hey Aaron, your voice is a bit different. Are you doing alright?
The 111mm and 130mm models all lock, and do NOT have the red shiny scales. Many have textured grippy grips. Not true that most Victorinox Swiss Army Knives are shiny red or non-locking. I have many 111mm and 130mm models. Also, there are small models in the Evogrip series with grippy scales and locking blades.
Grippy scales and locking blades ARE common with Victorinox Swiss Army Knives. The little red ones are good in their niche. Personally, I texture my red scaled Vics with cross hatching, using sandpaper. Takes a minute or two and gives acceptable grip.
Cheers. Thanks for the reviews.
My victorinox hunter has a lock and textured scales. The saw is excellent too.
From what I saw Swiza doesn't compete well with Victorinox BUT they definitely have some very interesting design decisions; the lock blade is one, but have you saw the scissors on D08? Very unique.
Have you looked at the Gerber Armbar yet? Looks interesting.
Gary Horn yes I am buying one today
I had no idea Victorinox uses Sandvik steel!
Chris Reuther it looks like I may have had my info wrong. 1.4116 steel
gideonstactical all good! I think it holds up pretty well. It marks less easily than Case stainless steel
Like that belly bag with the shoulder straps. What’s the name of it and the brand.
I'ts a pocket knife and I'm not INTERESTED in wrestling with it to get it out of the pocket. I see zero reasons to buy this new wander . Happy trails
A lot more thought should have gone into this knife/tool if they want to compete with the SAK.
I have been thinking about starting a company for a while but I’m too broke to start a company but if someone out there reads this feel free to rip off this idea: SKINS FOR THE PLASTIC SWISS ARMY KNIFE SCALES. There are several companies that make skins for phones, laptops, etc. Why not make skins for Victorinox Swiss Army knives? If you want to change the texture to make it more grippy, add a textured vinyl skin. If you want to protect it add a skin. If you want to change the color add a skin. If it looks old and scratched up and you care to make it look fresh again add a skin. Awesome idea but alas it doesn’t exist. I hope someone with the financial wherewithal will someday make these.
Hop on etsy dot com and look up swiss army scales.
hi friend , is it easy to sharpen like victorinox ?
Good review, thanks and take care.
No tooth pick? That’s what I use most!
Sorry it’s such a disappointment. I was looking forward to trying one but comfort & saws are important to me in a camp knife. Have you tried the “No Box” or “Live in No Box” brand knives? I think of them along the same line as Rough Rider Knives. Not a bad budget option with real wood scales. Like to see you review one.
i can see the rubber grips breaking and becoming a d=real draw back
Some say that the can opener isn't great either.
All of the Victorinox models that this would be the direct competition would include a lock. I do like the release mechanism of this one though, but I'm not ready to abandon Victorinox just yet.
Have you tried victorinox SAK New Soldier '08? It has a rubberized scales, liner lock and a fine blade, wood saw, flat screwdriver (also with liner lock), Philip screwdriver, and victorinox world known quality.
They are much better compare to victorinox . especially locking blade and steel liners and grippy scale.but remaining tools there is no special
only confusion I have is some say that the awl is made from a very soft steel and bends easily
@@HaraldSjellose yes 100% correct , awl was made with softsteel wood also we can't drill but locking blade and blade steel quality much better than victorinox
@@prakashlb2984 mine's scales broke off while trying to remove them yesterday :( sent a mail to swiza for warranty hope they will send a new one.
@@HaraldSjellose ok
When I saw how much the saw protruded from the handle I knew it wouldn't match a Victorinox
Has anyone tried the Swiza D08? What do you think of the scissors?
i will go for victorinox 😊
Victorinox..accept no substitute.
Alox all round the best.
Saw your arm off like the guy in that one movie.
Good fair eval.
The traditional 92 mm IS an URBAN tool, in my opinion. 👍👍
This has nothing on the Vic one hand trekker/soldier.
Damn... then you really had to poop (couldn’t find my poop emoji...) on them by slapping in the BEST SAK’s out there is your SAK Ranger Grip 78... 👍 SUPER VID!!!! Your the Best Bro!!!
pocket clip would have sold for me
I prefer the crappy bear grylls multitool more than this swiza .....
This is no competition against victorinox...
The saw is too thick....or thicker than Victorinox. Thus it is harder to saw.
Victorinox is the best.
Aesthetically it looks cool but in practice....Victorinox is much better.
Just about to order victorinox spartan
Weird rounded edges on all the tools, looks like a Chinese knock off of a Victorianox but the rubberized scales do have their advantages.
What’s the Victorinox knife your showing at 06:05?
Victorinox Ranger Grip 78
Thanks
Hm don't like this knife, it's not well thought through, saw sux, rubber may sound good but forget it once in the sun and you have a mass in your hands, all tools too exposed and hurt my hands... I'm fine with my Victorinox models 😉 thx for sharing...
FYI - the scissors on their other models are totally useless
It's too expensive.,only good is can use dishwasher
Are they built in China?
These type of tools just don't connect with me. For me they feel toyish. Not a fan
Not tacti-cool enough for me, jk.
Ish.
Excellent review. Good on them for trying something new, but Swiza offers nothing that I desire. I think they are ugly, the rubberized handles are more of a hindrance than a help, and locking blades are not needed on knives of this design if one knows how to properly use them. Keep up the great videos!
Hey bro, "Alox." Try one.
very dark video, not like always
knock off capitalizing on the tried and true victorinox.....flash in the pan
they copied the awl from victoriainox farmer
Those hot spots. :(
First
that's liked not likes da !!!
