    Right on. Back in the 70’s when I was learning to fly helicopters, the fixed wing Guys complained of us hogging the field. This was no gyro days and hard. Today the hovering airplanes hog the field and there’s difficulty trying to get a forward flight of anything in. I can relate. Great job. I’ve passed it on.

      It's kind of funny in a way I'll usually stay a day after an event just so I have more time to pack I'll hop out of my tent throw a pack in my heli just to get yelled at because the airplane guys decided he wanted to get out and fly when I waited so patiently. there's good and bad in both but like tail heavy said don't take it too seriously we're all here to have fun

    As someone who grew up in the hobby during the early 90s I can say that I have witnessed all the traits you describe. When I was doing things with a model aeroplane at the age of eight that most men in the club couldn’t do, you get a bit of negativity from them. Now I’m now in my 30s and still love flying. The key is fly safe and have fun, they’re big kid toys at the end of the day.

    • @ctvxl
      @ctvxl Рік тому +12

      I used to belong to a club in the mid 90s in North Texas. There was a 14yo kid there who was truly gifted on the sticks. His dad said that he was flying solo at the age of 8 after just one lesson. He took to it like a duck to water. To this day, that kid is still the most gifted RC fixed with pilot I have ever seen. He could fly with such accuracy it was incredible. Everyone respected him greatly, and if he gave anyone at the field any advice, they always listened. Even the really old timers.
      When I first joined the club I showed up at the field one day with a brand new plane. It was my second plane. I could fly, but was still very green, and hadn't flown in a couple of years. He went over my plane and made a few minor adjustments, then maidened and trimmed it. Then he buddy boxed with me because I was nervous I would crash it. He gave me a lot of pointers and had me flying solo confidently by the end of the day. Good times...

    As an ex state CFI for over 10 years in Australia, I have to say that no club member should ever shout at anyone else, in particular newcomers!

    As a 19-year old who's been in the hobby for 14 years now; i could think of a person for every single type you've listed. I've met plenty of older dudes thinking they're better pilots but didn't want to prove it to me after i've flown and show what i could do. An excellent analogy for the AMA club experience. Especially the FAA wannabes and the Club police. I have been building and flying since the 1960s and I avoided flying clubs for those exact reasons. Back then we had to worry about crossing frequencies and shooting each other down. It was always better to get a bunch of friends, find a big field, and try to chase each other around.

I apologized and moved over some but he STILL CONSTANTLY was watching my plane. 😂 That itty bitty Ultrix haha. I’ve got myself multiple times with it and had my finger in those prop blades at full throttle before. Yeah it might hurt for a second but definitely didn’t cut me open. Good video... I started out as the 3D guy, and fit that description pretty well! Lol, though I've since found myself transitioning into the scale flyer guy 'not represented here unfortunately'... in which there is no such thing as too much detail, even if it adds a tone of weight and makes the plane fly like crap... also, trying to match full-scale roll rates and turn radius characteristics in the model's scale.

    LOL All I can say is, my local club/field is Marymoor, and I visited it twice and helped set things up for 'new pilot day' and sat around with the members to see if I wanted to join, and I saw nearly all of your 'stereotypes', particularly the negative ones which is why two years later I am still only flying on my farm and awful at it.

    I’ve never flown club, mostly just parks or blasting around over my neighbors fields (they’re fine with it.) I will say I’m one of those guys who doesn’t strictly maintain line of sight and/or sometimes hop into general aviation airspace when no one is using it. Every time I look at the FAA website and see that I need to go through a whole new process to legally fly is the start of a bad day for me. Now that you’re thinking I’m probably flying 50 miles away and 10,000 feet I will say that I have a personal maximum of 800 that I rare like go to and I will try to maintain visual contact, mostly with my drones as those are screens, my planes are a different story because I can’t take my eyes off of what I’m doing and those are rigged to goggles. The only time I’ve flown in a club like setting is when the fite fest West happened and that’s the first time I’ve flown an airplane FPV and not ended my day with a crashed plane.

    Cudoz for calling out Horizon cultists. Seems every foam plane they bring out is snatched up and given rave reviews by the faithful. I bought an eflite, and b4 the 1st launch had to fix a broken aileron hinge. A $180 airplane should not have to be repaired b4 the first flight. I'm done with foam. My next plane will b a PA balsa. And BTW, I fly on private land, so the only a hole l deal with is myself.

    Had an experience while maidening a P-51 35cc Mustang. We had two fields and right angles to each other but one faced the Sun so after I got the plane in the air I turned 90° to face away from the sun. I was no longer standing directly in front of the flight station now, so the president of the club came over picked up the flight station and moved it in front of me. I told him I'll be landing shortly using the runway I took off from, would he come back and move the flight station back from me when I land. Now that's the kind of adherence to rules that would have made Henrich Himmler proud.

    I'm a pattern flier. But only because the FAA, the Tower, and Approach, get really pissy when you try to randomly hover over the airfield. Rescue isn't a fan of it either but they get to play with their hoses so they let it slide.

    I'm glad I found these videos and comments. I'm new to the hobby of about 4 months now and there is a local RC club/field about 4 miles from where I live (very convenient) ....never knew it was there. I stopped by there one day during the week while out on a rip on the bike, met a couple guys that was there, and they gave me the low down on requirements etc....they seemed like good ole boys and I was thinking about joining....not so much now. I'll keep going to the 2 schools and the ballfield I found, I hit the ballfield during the week and the schools on the weekend while kids are gone and the place is huge, you could probably fit 6-7 football fields inside the flying area and now I met the guy with a farm next door that has 40 acres, he told me if I ever get run off at the school just come over to his farm and have at it. I don't do drama so them flying clubs can have it, I like the quiet, peaceful, being outdoors, sun on my face, fresh air, no mouth, nobody bitching, no rules, out of the house and watching the graceful flight of my plane against the sunset backdrop ALL BY MYSELF....well, unless my friend shows up. There's not too much flying going on when she gets there.

I was flying aerobatics over the field when another club who was driving past the field stopped and then proceeded to tell me that I shouldn't be flying aerobatics over the field. Apparently, I was putting him in danger at his house.

    Haha! I really enjoyed this! I have been into all things RC for over 40yrs. I for sure have seen all of these stereotypes in various forms, and must admit, I have been guilty of some of this behavior myself. I have found that the majority of long time RC enthusiasts tend to be male, and most are quite intelligent people. Many are friendly and will go out of their way to help you if you need it. Donating parts, helping you glue and tape to get one more flight in, etc. But many also have big egos and can be very argumentative sometimes.
    As I have gotten older, I have been able to recognize some of my own negative traits in this regard, and really work hard to not be "that guy". I enjoy debating with intelligent people and learning from them when we have a difference of opinion, but if things start to get heated, I try to apologize and walk away. I have found that life is so much easier this way.

Always remember not to take it or yourself too seriously.
