Tips & Tricks for seeing Mardi Gras Parades

In this video, Andrew and James share some ideas for how to prepare for a parade, including information to look for ahead of time, options for where to watch, and what the elements of a parade are. We're specifically focusing here on float parades - walking parades have different locations, smaller crowds, and fewer throws, but you can still find information about them by the means listed in this video.

Android - play.google.com/store/apps/de...

ITEMS TO CONSIDER PACKING
- CLOTHES - obviously wear clothes (much of what you've heard about Mardi Gras is exaggerated!), but things to aim for in particular are:
1) comfort, because you'll be out for a good while and probably moving a lot;
2) weather adaptability, like a layer you can add or subtract, because the temperature changes fast this time of year; and
3) flashiness - a lot of people like to wear costumes to parades, and if you want to catch a lot of throws, you need the riders on the floats to notice you! It's all about the upper body here - that's all the folks on the floats can see.
- GLOVES - if your hands are cold (and holding a cold drink counts), catching a well-thrown string of beads can HURT.
- SNACKS - being hangry ruins the fun, and it's gonna be a high-calorie day.
- DRINKS - water at least, and alcohol optionally - if not for you, then for barter (offering a float rider a drink can get you some good throws). Cans rather than bottles if you can help it.
- SPARE PHONE BATTERY AND CABLE - obvious reasons.
- TOILET PAPER OR OTHER SANITARY ITEMS - obvious reasons if you use your imagination.
- CASH - a lot of curbside stands pop up during Mardi Gras and some are cash only, plus you may want $1s to tip the flambeaux.
- EMPTY GROCERY BAGS - for throws or trash.
. . . and whatever you carry your supplies in, leave a little room - thanks to the throws, most parade watchers leave carrying more than they arrived with.
BONUS POINTS - you'll see people along the route holding posters, which can be a fun tactic for catching attention - you can use a poster to tell the float riders if it's your first Mardi Gras or if it's your birthday (not the most creative options, but workable), or make a joke on the theme of the parade, or just write "Hey Jamie" - there's bound to be a Jamie on one of the floats. Glitter helps.

Here for this year, for the first time. Very good info. We learned a lot of this the hard way. The one thing I want to emphasize is that if you're in it for the throws - the end of the route is where it's at. They know they're done and want to get rid of what they have. We have a dozen BAGS of unopened beads, because they weren't chucking single necklaces any more - they were chucking full bags. A couple parades on Friday and Saturday netted us 35 pounds of throws - which we'll donate because we don't really need it. We had fun cheering on the parade floats/dancers/etc, that they were almost to the end, great job, etc. But they were clearly *very* tired. Some of them had been out in the rain and cold for 4+ hours and it was getting towards 11pm. Not the same energy as the start I'd imagine.

Great video. Captured Mardi Gras perfectly! Want to shout out to all the schools uptown who have food, drinks and bathrooms as a fundraiser. They are great options when you need any of these.
Thanks again for watching Linda. Glad you enjoyed it!
No one -- and I mean, NO ONE -- smiles better than Andrew!!!

Need Jeff!!
Great video. Strange that there is not a special call that you scream at the parade. Here in Germany in cologne you scream "alaaf" to the people on the wagons and in the rest you call "helau" what is comes from the french "Hé, la haut", than you get the candy of gifts that they throw from the wagon.
Thanks again for watching Daniel. Glad your enjoyed it!
The tradition of Germany you shared sounds really exciting. Thanks for sharing.
I don’t know if you mentioned it but NO GLASS BOTTLES. Fastest way to get your booze confiscated and poured out by police: glass, and obviously too young
Best advice if you find yourself stuck on the wrong side of a parade, park your car and go watch the parade because it will take you as long to find a route around as it will for the parade to pass

Parking is an issue in New Orleans in normal times of year..a nightmare during Mardi Gras.
Where can I see the Mardi Gras Indians?

Hey, I just want to mention, please, please, please do NOT throw beads into the trees, beads in trees are rarely ever removed, they choke the trees, way down the branches, kill trees, pollut the city, and kill animals.

Noted. Thanks for pointing it out!
