I had to pause in the middle of your video for a moment to say how much I appreciate you make eye contact to the viewers while you’re talking. I have problems focusing sometimes so it really helps me stay on track when I can see face-to-face !
What you say in the last couple of minutes of the video is so so so important. Graph view is completely new paradigm that solves issues that a folder hierarchy can never solve. You'll never understand Obsidian's vision if you cannot see that. Great content.
today is my first day using Obsidian and I have already watched 10 of your videos, thank you so much for taking your time to make this for us! I would be so lost without your videos
Also worth to mention - if you go to settings -> Files & Links -> Exclude Files, it will let you to exclude particular files and folders from the graph view.
This definitely helped me see what the graph view is actually useful for, thanks so much! I immediately went and added several "groups" and this is a gamechanger.
Videos are phenomenal. I use both Notion and Obsidian as my note-taking app because they both serve different purpose. Obsidian for me is more for planning and gathering information while Notion is for finalizing the story.
Thanks Luka, I also use others tools, and I also use Notion and even Evernote. I have a future video where I will talk about this in these series. I like how you use notion to finalize the story, I take it your a writer or content creator of some sort?
Neither of those. I’m a computer scientist who loves to track different stuff in computer science like research, vulnerabilities etc. and takes a note of it.
@@lukajeliciclux3074Hi. Sergio's content resonates with us both and I have a use case for both Obsidian and Notion. Could you tell me please, is there a particular Notion UA-camr that tops your list?
Thanks! This is substantial video... in sense you really learn great stuff watching it... many UA-camrs are wasting just your time... This is not like that.
11:16 Upon listening to this the first few time I thought that an "Existing File" was a note that 'had a connection but had no content'. This puzzled me but I eventually reasoned that I probably got it the wrong way round and that the definition applied to non-Existing Files, ie. a non-Existing File is a note that 'had a connection but had no content'
So many explanation about how set filters and I still didn't understand why do I need this graph view... So I disabled it. Thank you for a lot of useful videos and good luck.
11:23 Just beforehand you explain how you can just view orphan notes in order to create links. However, I don't undertsand how you can create links if the notes that you coukd potential link to are hidden? The only method I can think of is that you go into each note and look for unlinked references. Could you please briefly elaborate?
Thank you so much Sergio! I appreciate your videos so much! By chance, did you figure out if it possible to export the graph view? as pdf or something else? thanks!
Ta for this, as I didn't know of a way to open a graph view for specific folders (like for my uni), so I had sub-vaults in the past, for this purpose. Makes things a whole lot easier! 🙂
Thank you for your very informative video! Perhaps you can help me with the following problem: I want to use Obsidian for history. I have created notes for the years 1700 - 1800 and linked them successively. Accordingly, in the graph view I see the numbers (= years), which are linked together. These numbers should represent a TIMELINE ascending from left to right. The idea is to connect the individual nodes (= year) later with notes that contain events in the respective year. Problem: I can’t get a straight line, not even by stretching the number nodes. The shape is always slightly curved or wavy. Do you know how / if I can create an absolutely straight line in the graph view?
What a great video! Thank you very much! Could you do a video - if not already on your to do list ^^ - tackling the length of the notes? You often hear good pros and cons for either long and short notes and I try to shorten my notes, but sometimes it really gets long because I want to have them all in one place (e.g. One page to summarize a whole paper). So basically, how one can use Obsidian effrctively without going into zettelkasten /atomic notes
Thanks for the suggestion Kevin. I did not have that on my list yet. I also try to shorten my notes as much as I can. Otherwise I easily get overwhelmed going back through them. I have added your suggestion to my list for these series. would love to have more suggestions as well. The series is roughly half way! Have a great one! :)
I´m still not sure how to turn my explorer files into a graph view where I do not need to worry about organizing files on hierarchic folders anymore. Got a video explaining that?
dumb question but is there a way i can change the size of one specific node? I like to filter my node importance by size or to easily use it as a subject visual
what do you mean by "MOC"? For me, it stands for Management of Change, which is a type of document used in companies to handle changes in processes, products, etc. But I don't think this definition fits what you are refering to in the video.
Really great video. I am new to Obsidian and your videos are very helpful in navigating all of the functionality available. On your use case 3, I can't seem to locate the "local graph view" option. Has this been disabled in the latest version of Obsidian? Or is there a different way of finding it/actioning it?
I tried to use 'Recently Files' plugin to star my graph view filters files but the file didn't appear in 'Recently Files'' lists. Did I make a mistake at somewhere?
@@FromSergio Oh, just found it. It only was working with the local graph on a new pane, not at the side window maneu. But i figure out ...just a mattter of drag and drop it there.. :D Thanks!

Super Helpful, thank you! Nick Milo just showed how he now uses the new Obsidian bookmarks to keep graph searches like you were hoping for, too.
Glad it was helpful! I'm aware, very happy with that feature :)
Thank you bringing it nicely fast to the point: Action in the way of showing the use cases and examples. Thank you!

The Starred core plugin is now Bookmarks just in case you were left scratching your head not being able to find it like I was.

For some reason my local graph shows nodes but no names when in the corner.
You have more options than I do, is it something i should have enabled?
I seem to fail to grasp the usefulness of looking at my files in this fancy way. Any support?
Tip: for more clarity
In Forces Tab:
- Link Force all the way up
- Link Distance all the way down
Having an option for different sets of filters for graph view would be so great.
Completely agree which is why I have a note for all my filters, a feature request was already submitted for that!
7:40 The new Bookmarks feature let's you have Custom filtered graphs saved !!
Gave me some good ideas to organize my notes 👍

Hey
do you know if there is a way to filter by dates?
if I want to find all nodes from last year for example, can I use date range in filter?
Thanks
I use dataview for that. Feel free to check out my dataview video! And sorry for only getting back to this comment now, busy week!

Can Obsidian make graph view of items within a note?
So not to another note
Maybe a plugin
Not that I'm aware of!
I do not have this Depth filter options on my Obsidian... maybe they got rid of it ? Plus i have the animation feature...
