- Does size matter when it comes to chainsaw bar length? You bet it does! Check out this face off, I wanted to show you the performance of the 40v HP 18" vs the 14" brushless. I know what your thinking but there is a big price difference and size does matter for compactness vs power. You need to watch this one all the way through! @RYOBITOOLSUSA

For those interested in the TtC (Time to Cut) metrics:
Cut #1: 14in took 29s;
Cut #2: 18in took 12s with presumably proper attack
Cut #3: 18in took 13s with aggressive hard press
Observation: aggressive pressure that bogs down the chain is not productive and likely just drains the battery more quickly
Thanks. I thought I'd check the comments before I timed it.
observation 3 is correct. let the chain do the work, it is sharpened and cut to only pull a specific size of chip that won't bog the saw(true for gas and electric). if you want it more aggressive, you need more power.
Major downside is after 5-6 big cuts, the batteries need a break. I have 5 40v batteries I use, and for processing anything substantial a gas saw makes more sense
Thanks for the comparison. I have the 14" and I love it. I don't use it much, but when I do I know it will be ready to go. I don't have to worry about gas going bad and making the saw useless.
I am a big fan of battery when possible. No carb, no messy fuel, no fumes making me stink for the rest of the day, no yanking to start after setting it down, can carry it in my hatchback, doesn't disturb neighbors (especially when I am trying to get trees out of the road on my way to work at 4AM), and long run probably costs less. I cut down probably 100 trees with the 14" so I have high hopes for the 18" upgrade!
Excellent video, I'm going to pick up the 18 now. Subscribed....thank you
Cool demonstration! Thanks alot !
Thank you. Just bought the 14 inch.
Damn I would love the hat and log shield
Just seen this video now. And I would love to see a new video comparing the 18" versus the 20" that just came out.
Nice!
I've got the 14 and have been a bit underwhelmed, the 18 looks like exactly what I wanted.
Love the helmet I will look for it.
You should do a follow up video comparing the new 20 inch chainsaw to the old 18 inch chainsaw. The new 20 inch is supposed to be the equivalent of a 50cc gas chainsaw while the 18 inch is supposed to be the equivalent of a 37cc gas chainsaw. No one has made a video comparing the two of them. You could be the first!
Thanks for reviewing this newer HF vise. I’ve been curious about it since seeing it for the first time a few months ago. They really are making some great value options in woodworking for the intermediate woodworker or hobbyist. I’m glad that this one is as good as it seems.
Love my 14 Ryobi but I think the 18 hp is in my future. Great video, thanks for making it. 👍
I did the same
👍
Thanks for sharing. Wow what a difference. What makes the 18in more powerful?
It has a different motor than the 14".
Una bestia
What a beast!
Are these the newest 40v saws or the last generation brushless?
The 18” is new the 14” is first gen
@@livefreeandtoolon Actually, the 14" is at least second-gen. I have the original 14" (not-brushless) 40V, with the "mid-mount" battery that slides in from the top, which means it can't take anything bigger than about a 4AH battery. I have since picked up the 18" with the chain brake, and by comparison, it's like night and day. So I think the latest would technically be third-gen.
Speaking of which, since that latest/largest 18"-er is powerful enough that Ryobi decided it needed a chain brake (unlike the smaller/slower ones), wouldn't it be wise to be wearing chaps when running that saw?
I'm looking for this as a SHTF chainsaw, it's quiet, I have solar so fuel never runs out, and I have 4 batteries for this already because I have other 40v tools
Have two gas saws also
With something like ryobi always get the high end brushless and HP versions. That’s what I did with the mower and string trimmer. More tool than I need and now I have 2 5ah batteries.
also, a new chain versus one that is too loose and has a few cuts on it. that 14in chain is too loose, and needs to be sharpened.
I have both and suspect your chain on the 14 was garbage. The 18" does have more capacity but I find can be awkward for general clean up due to excessive bar length. My 18 also likes to throw the chain often when used for trimming. You should also learn how to properly handle a saw before you get hurt 😅
That chain on the 14" saw looked pretty damn slack 😬
IKR? 1:40 it's pretty obvious when he pinches it.
@@madpogue needs a new/sharpened chain and a slack adjustment and then comparison. the 14in saw should have had no issue with this, the chain is dull and too loose.
Can I just put an 18” bar on my 14” brushless ryobi chainsaw?
I have the same question...🤭
How about a 14" bar on an 18" model?
Different number of links. 52 to 62. I'd say no. The sprocket is chain specific
Ha ha ha! Both of these saws are AWFUL. I have the 18 inch and it smokes and doesn’t cut worth crap.
