  • 1985 Harley Davidson FXR custom built at one point is my new restoration project. I was told the old Evo runs and just needs a new ignition. The wiring is hacked up, backwards and a complete mess. She will need a complete restoration. More to come.

I picked up my second FXR ten months ago. It had been left out side in the Washington weather for 10 years. Tackling things one area at a time.

I just started on a '84 FXR barn find about a month ago. It's been a learning experience for sure. They are rock solid bikes and the EVO engines are tanks. I had the same wiring mess to make sense of but she's finally running and I take short rides on her a few times a week and work on the issues as they come up. i just went through the transmission this week. That S&S carb you got is easy to go bring back to life. The FXR I have had sat since 2006. Some disassembly and cleaning and the S&S is as good as new. Really easy to work on and no rebuild kit was needed in my case. Just elbow grease. Save yourself the headache and avoid that Amazon carb my friend. Im a little further along in the process than you but not by much. Enjoy it. I love bringing them back to life.

The bowl on the Super E ended up being stripped. I got a complete Amazon carb for less than the price of a replacement S&S bowl. I was thinking to swap the bowls but the bolts pattern was a little different. I was able to get it running with the Amazon carb but I’m hoping to get the S&S back on there at some point. More videos coming soon

I have an 83 Shovelhead and if I recall correctly, that line is the crankcase relief, most likely it wet sumped and someone didn’t understand so they plugged it off. With that in mind, I’d plan to either replace that oil pump or at least lap the seat and replace the ball. Mine still does it on rare occasions, so I catch the oil and put it back into the engine, good to go, only happens if it sits for months, and not even every time. Above comment was before you mentioned sumping, and before I realized this video was 4 months old so probably didn’t help a bit lol

Later reply but I think that plugged off line was a chain oiler. Not needed. The crankcase was vented to the air cleaner. Lots of progress on this bike but still lots to do. Not giving up on it.

@@twinsmotogarage1866 oh, mine has the dry clutch, so there is a primary chain oiler that sprays oil directly on the chain, then, the drain hooks to the scavenger pump, has yours been converted to a wet clutch? I plan to do mine but haven’t yet, looking for an easy pull clutch so my lady can ride it.

Yank the entire wiring harness and run a fresh one right off the bat... if you want it to be truly road worthy.
Otherwise, it's never ending chasing needless problems.

I almost did that but there was so much that had already been hacked off or eliminated I didn’t need a full harness. Just had to figure out the essentials and it’s all good now. Now that I’ve been forced to study and understand the entire wiring system it’s actually pretty simple. Posting another video tomorrow. I need to catch up on the uploads, thanks for watching!
