Amen. I took TSD for two years until recently. It's a lot easier to say I take "Korean Karate" or "martial arts" than explain what Tang Soo Do is while a person's eyes glaze over.
As a Tang Soo Do practicioner, I've always wanted to see how Tang Soo Do would fair against Kyokushin but you have to remember that it depends on the spirit of the fighters themselves. The first guy seemed very hesitant and the Kyokushin fighter seemed to dominate him. The second fighter faired better though, and proved to be something of a challenge for the Kyokushin guy. Good video!
Shuri Ryu is an eclectic art polished by the man that brought Karate to America O'Sensei Robert Trias. He trained under many masters such as Tong Gee Hsing,Choki Motobu, Ankoh Itsu. O'Sensei was a navy middle weight Champion before studying the arts so the practical aspects of Boxing are an integrel part of Shuri Ryu as well as Ground fighting, Joint locks, breaks, etc. I am 3rd generation from O'Sensei and my Sensei was a three time Toughman Champion way before Dana White even knew Aerobics
Karate looks like kung fu at it's higher levels. that is why tangsudo appears to be influenced by kung fu. Karate came from kung fu, but not the kung fu that exists today. All of those kung fu like kata are also in shotokan karate.
In America karate is used as a catch all term for all martial arts that aren't either judo, kung fu or jiu jitsu. Many American schools until the nineties referred to TSD and TKD as Korean Karate, which is totally inaccurate as Korean is an English word and karate is Japanese. However, to an outsider it is probably easier for a TSD practitioner to say I practise a form of karate than to have to explain what tang soo do is to someone who has little knowledge of MAs.
@Trevorleeous it all depends. if you are over 5'9 and 170lbs u should take kyokushin or full contact karate,if u are skinny you should go for kung fu or taekwondo
@YunSeung I agree with you... but not 100%. It is not just the fighter (and all the personality and psychological aspects of him)... it is also the training methodology, definitely the master (teacher/coach/trainer), and also the art itself and it's arsenal of techniques.
tang soo do in japanese means karate-do pretty much so this is like korea vs. japan in the same martial art so yea this video should be called (karate match)
@Lee7676 I don't think that's necessarily the case. I'm 5' 8'' and about 145lbs and I've trained in Kyokushin for about 7yrs and I used to weigh even less. It's about what feels best for you not for your body. Just because someone is smaller doesn't mean they shouldn't learn such a full contact style in fact they should go after something more aggressive and power centered because of their lesser size.
Well, Tang soo do has two meanings. One means "way of the Chinese hand" referencing the Chinese lend the Koreans their hand strike techniques. The other meaning is "way of the Tang hand" another reference to the Tang dynasty in China from 617 to 907 A.D.
Nice vid and nice fight. Chubbier dude was more aggressive but the other dude was ok. It would be nice if you would tell us who was karate and who was tang soo do thoguh. :)
Well factoring Newtons Laws of Motion etc F=MXA .Now Timing is crucial In punching or kicking, Ideally you want your opponent to commit the first move. Once he starts forward momentum, your reflexes must be refined to "beat him to the punch" If done correctly you will take advantage of his forward vector + Your forward vector resulting in a compounded impact. Now as far as say a rib fracture if your fist is tight enough where impact is on 1-2 knuckles it's 8lbs per sq inch.
lol it was the whole "heres what i think" angle you were throwing my way and it was just what great men have said. fair enough you can think that but to try and make it seem like its your own revalation is pretty gimpy. I was discussing that karate did not come from china and you get all "everything comes from everything" on me to sort of sidestep my point to still come out "wise". Im busy getting ready for tonight so apologies for not caring lol. Happy new year when it comes x
you should know that this is kyokushin karate vs hapkido.a chunky guy with a left chinese letter sign is from korean kyokushin karate ,and they went to challenge to local hapkido school.hapkido school lost match.
@ibzm so you're saying the japan karate association is wrong? they recognize many styles of karate. there are also karate associations all over the world with many different styles. koreans took karate from japan who took karate from okinawa and created tang soo do and tae kwon do which have many of the same kata as the other japanese styles of karate. shotokan is very much a style of karate as well as shito ryu, wado ryu, and kenpo.
@YunSeung one guy has shorter sleeves, like in kyokushin, while the others have longer sleeves. Probabely some other kind of karate. There is nothing to suggest TSD, and the guy is slapping away like a hapkido fighter.....
I have to agree with the other comments and that is not Tang Soo Do or very poor school of it. I did not see any kicking, which if it was Tang Soo Do, there would have been. When people do these kind of videos, it is a waste of time, because it just does not all depend on the art, but the student too!
well technically before Karate was known as "Empty Hand Way" it was "Chinese Hand Way" they later changed it to Empty Hand Way.. but Tang Soo Do literaly translates to Chinese Hand Way. Im not saying that Karate was once called Tang Soo Do, thats what the Koreans called it in refrence to the Chinese Hand Way. Im just saying that at once point Karate was kown as "Chinese Hand Way.. However you would say that in Japanese. If you look its almost the same Characters.
I take Tang Soo Do. There are techniques that I've never seen in formal TSD training. E.G.: I don't believe there are any techniques aught by the World Tang Soo Do Assoc. involving a head2head lock up, it's not focused on. That said, there are obviously moves that are "style free" so to speak. Like throwing a knee when locked up, who wouldn't? looks to be good demonstration of differences between styles, but the matches Seem *cough* weighted IMHO BTW, what's with the hands down on the TSDers?
@Calle299 I Am, and I'm not a kid. My students train how to fight, not how to talk. And what I said is true. Not a single TSD kick or anything close to it.
Is Tang Soo Do a descendant of karate or Tae Kwon Do? Because I thought Tae Kwon Do was a mixture of Taekkyon and Karate so is Tang Soo Do basically Tae Kwon Do without the Taekkyon influence e.g Korean Karate???
wait doesn't tang soo do stop at a dark blue??? b/c black means death or something. and the dark blue stands the quest of never ending knowledge. and i know that tang soo do is a mixture of arts from japan, southern china and two original arts that came from its home country. but most arts are like that. i just started not to long ago so I'm still a white belt and the concept of moving my hips to add power and driving my punches are hard for me but i will get better in given time
So what your saying is a chinese fighter showed a karate man how he punches and the karate man improved on it and made it his own... so karate is chinese? No. I know thats a very very simplified way of putting it but thats basically what you're saying. And I believe the approach of the japanese arts is vastly different to any chinese art to such an extent that nothing other than various minor techniques come from the chinese in karate. of course this is an opinion lol
Thats not Tang So Do. Yes its a form of martial arts, but not the Korean style of martial arts; Tang So Do. I took Tang So Do since I was in kindergarten and my next belt would be black, which I am only 1 or 2 stripes away from getting. The techniques shown weren't that of Tang So Do.
You are half right. that is Hapkido, which like Tang Soo Do and Taekwondo, are considered "cheap liquor store knockoffs" of their Japanese Karate/Aiki-jujutsu origins. The only originally Korean style of fighting is Taekkyon.
The karate guy is heavy so finds it easy to bully way in, TSD not aggressive enough to stop his attack, and not striking to kill . A fight is about the people fighting, not the art practiced
Dude, Karate is a word that originated in the 1900's. "taekyun no karate" just means "taekyon with karate" there is no way in hell that that the word karate existed as early as 668, it is a much later term. What is your primary source for this information?
yes but this video is not called "who would win in a real life threatening situation" is it? they are just having a bit of fun lighten up. not everything is about real grim reality. If i want that ill have a look at some geoff thompson
DUDE, DUDE, DUDE, If he meant Taekyon "NOT" karate. It is his grammar mistake, don't blame me for that. He should have put a comma and a "t". AND, He still doesn't know what a primary source is.
@LilacLynn4 I bet you didnt know that tae kwon do came from tang so do, and if you dont believe me then take it up with master khan cause he told me himself :)
do u know what makes me laff the most the fact that people argue over the smallest things it don't matter what it comes from or what style blah blah blah its about archiving something that your proud of if you do it for pure show then ur in my opinion missing out these guys look like they enjoy what ya do so fair play to you guys :P woot woot oh and another thing i do both a style of karate and tang soo and they are different in there own rite !
@browsfan There is a difference between "studying" a few styles and actually fighting skilled fighters in any MA style. It is obvious you haven´t fought a skilled TSD fighter. The kicks can be as fast as a punch, but way more powerful. The fists have less distance to travel to hit the opponent, but the legs can be used in such ways you won´t even see the attack untill you are on the floor. Aside that, we the "kicking styles" also have hands. Se we can also punch, and many of us do. Regards
Please explain what these "taekkyon rumors" are. From a historical standpoint, there is no evidence that modern teakkyon has anything to do with the old Korean sport of teakkyon.
one, tangsudo is an acceptable alternate spelling. Two, tang soo do was only influenced by shotokan karate. All the founders of tangsoodo were students of the creator of shotokan karate. The Koreans learned karate in japan, but refused to admit it because of Japanese imperialism at the time. Sorry, that is what your art is. Thirdly, reading makes you know history, not practicing. I might not be a black belt in tangsoodo, but I am a black belt in martial arts history. BOW TO YOUR SENSEI!!

Original Tang Soo Do.. what is Moo Duk Kwan tang soo do.. By Grandmaster Hwang Kee was highly Influenced by Japanese Shotokan. Hwang Kee would watch Japanese Soilders train and practiced thier Katas. hence the reason we do most of the same Katas/Hyungs. Say chuck norris style

that first big dude ain't no joke. i wish this was a little longer. great clip.

Great stuff they are both tough I use to train Kyokushin & I can clearly see these Tangsoo do guys can bring it.
This is no Tang Soo Do but Hapki Yusul ["合氣柔術" Aiki-JuJitsu script on the back of the uniform]
Karate looks like kung fu at it's higher levels. that is why tangsudo appears to be influenced by kung fu. Karate came from kung fu, but not the kung fu that exists today. All of those kung fu like kata are also in shotokan karate.

Once the second tang soo do guy came out then the karate man stared getting beat up then he got real sloppy. Tang so
@Trevorleeous it all depends. if you are over 5'9 and 170lbs u should take kyokushin or full contact karate,if u are skinny you should go for kung fu or taekwondo

If I am not mistaken, this is kyukoshin karate (big guy) vs. a hapki yusul (or some type of korean MA with hap in it) dojang in Korea.
@kplsharma757
Wase karate wala Thaa konsa?
@Lee7676 I don't think that's necessarily the case. I'm 5' 8'' and about 145lbs and I've trained in Kyokushin for about 7yrs and I used to weigh even less. @YunSeung
karate did originate from okinawa, but there are still styles of karate that are japanese or at least from japan.
The guy with the black trim around his uniform is practicing Tang Soo Do .
who is who?
I want to see them fight toe to toe Olympic TKD rules without any safety equipment!
Well factoring Newtons Laws of Motion etc F=MXA .Now Timing is crucial In punching or kicking, Ideally you want your opponent to commit the first move. it doesn't matter in what uniform u fight, you can tell by the style
I wasnt paying attention to his gi i was looking at his take down
I am so proud to be Kyokushin! OUS! He mopped up the floor with that Tang soo do guy!

@zombie2481 a documentary showing in fine detail, the way our politicians handle the budget in a very organized fashion.
Why post that it is Karate vs Tang Soo Do-it is a diservice to Tang Soo Do, when it is clearly Hapkido.
you should know that this is kyokushin karate vs hapkido.a chunky guy with a left chinese letter sign is from korean kyokushin karate ,and they went to challenge to local hapkido school.hapkido school lost match.

@YunSeung The Kanji on the Big Guy's Dogi is The sam as the Kanji on mine..."Kyokushin"
@sifujamie Very wrong, Karate is its own style developed in Okinawa.
OK this vid also is titled kyokushin vs hapkido which is it really?
Dude no, you are wrong. The Kanku- sign on his gi is a symbol of kyokushin.
I have to agree with the other comments and that is not Tang Soo Do or very poor school of it. I did not see any kicking, which if it was Tang Soo Do, there would have been. ronki23 tang so doo is a hybrid martial art
It mixes techniques from karate shotokan, Kung fu, subak and taekkyon
both
cual es el tan soo do y cual es el karate
Karate 空手道 (empty hand way)
Tang Soo Do 唐手道 (Chinese Hand Way)
wait doesn't tang soo do stop at a dark blue??? b/c black means death or something. and the dark blue stands the quest of never ending knowledge. and i know that tang soo do is a mixture of arts from japan, southern china and two original arts that came from its home country. but most arts are like that. i just started not to long ago so I'm still a white belt and the concept of moving my hips to add power and driving my punches are hard for me but i will get better in given time
Black trim on do bok(uniform) is Tang Soo Do
Obviously you don't know what a primary source is. This shows me you are not someone to have a historical debate with.

I didn't see a single Tang So Do kick in that match.
My Red belts would kick both their arses in a hard beat.
@kplsharma757
ofcource MOTU.
This has already been added as Hapkido v Kyokushin
@YunSeung Karate is Japanese, and if you want to get technical, it's Okinawan.
yes but this video is not called "who would win in a real life threatening situation" is it? they are just having a bit of fun lighten up. not everything is about real grim reality. If i want that ill have a look at some geoff thompson
GOju ryu or kyokushin?
Kyokushin any day!!

Kyokushin Karate is beast
i do tang soo do too. it is fun.
Never mind... I'm crazy. This is somethin' I would've rather seen in K-1.
@LilacLynn4 I bet you didnt know that tae kwon do came from tang so do, and if you dont believe me then take it up with master khan cause he told me himself :)
I saw this video but it was named "karate vs Hapkido"...hmmm
LOL 1:24
LOL
lollollolol
lol!!
do u know what makes me laff the most the fact that people argue over the smallest things it don't matter what it comes from or what style blah blah blah its about archiving something that your proud of if you do it for pure show then ur in my opinion missing out these guys look like they enjoy what ya do so fair play to you guys :P woot woot oh and another thing i do both a style of karate and tang soo and they are different in there own rite !
So the first fight is won by a karate guy?
... I'm guessint this was some kind of dojo vs dojo or somethin.
isn't a TANG SOO DO at all
@browsfan
There is a difference between "studying" a few styles and actually fighting skilled fighters in any MA style.
It is obvious you haven´t fought a skilled TSD fighter. The kicks can be as fast as a punch, but way more powerful. The fists have less distance to travel to hit the opponent, but the legs can be used in such ways you won´t even see the attack untill you are on the floor.

Yep, Tang Soo Do stops at dark blue.
Please explain what these "taekkyon rumors" are. From a historical standpoint, there is no evidence that modern teakkyon has anything to do with the old Korean sport of teakkyon.
No es Tang Soo Do , no tiene el pathc de TSD
This is not TSD
None of this was TKD. All Kyokushin Karate.
one, tangsudo is an acceptable alternate spelling. Two, tang soo do was only influenced by shotokan karate. All the founders of tangsoodo were students of the creator of shotokan karate. The Koreans learned karate in japan, but refused to admit it because of Japanese imperialism at the time. Sorry, that is what your art is. Thirdly, reading makes you know history, not practicing. i do tang soo do, and tis way better than karate i use to do karate and hated it, i then moved to tang soo do
If there was TSD vs kyokushin , karate would owned Big time it worst then this.
อยู่ที่คน ไม่ได้อยู่ที่ของ
@YunSeung Noones taught me but enough martial arts movie have shown me XD
Your wrong. Chuck Norris did train in Tang Soo Do, but Taekwondo was not the style he created. Tang Soo Do and Taekwondo were nearly the same art at one time. Look it up for the whole story dont have time to write it all, but basically due to sum polictical bs became seperate styles in the 50's. Taekwondo became Koreas national martial art while TSD stayed more underground/traditional with Hwang Kee being the head figure.
tang soo do is much easier than kyokushin karate because theres more of a high and low blocking
all Kyokoshin...no TKD here...the uniform is still karate even if it has the black lining...its still a kimono type Gi...so karate it is
not tang soo do at all
Are these ppl really using martial arts ??
I see 5 year old fighting like that...
The chuby guy is the karate guy isn´t he?
no - there is no tkd there as far as I can see...
@jumpingjackfennessy That's a lie karate started way back.
No true Korean Martial art would use a black belt. It should be midnight blue. Anything else is wrong.
All that stuff that is out there now that is being called Tang Soo Do with all these fancy things going on.. That is not real Tang Soo Do that is a waterd down version a copy of a copy of a copy.. real first hand Traditional Tang Soo Do is strong
Midnight Blue is the proper term but yeh same thing.. ja ja
Actually its a common mistake that karate comes from kung fu if thats what you mean. There is far more evidence to show that it originated in Okinawa and then to japan. Its more chinese propaganda than actual truth. Obviously its hard to say that nothing in karate is influenced by kung fu but the mechanics and practices are mainly okinawan
the only martial arts can beat these guys is muay thai and its crazy cousin lethwei and in case of grappling.. juijitsu or wrestling.
This is hapkido not tang soo do
it seemed as though the first combatent just kind of ran in. it is true that Tang Soo Do shares many of the same forms with kyokushin however we don't spend the entire day hitting eachother with full force. we excercise control and speed. using the thoughts behind e=mc2. the first guy appeared to be new to the fighting scene whereas the second guy remained more stable not leaning in and losing control over his body. the first guy should have followed through with his techniques and combo kicks
Really? Then why did the Tang Soo Do practitioners get their asses beat?
lol yeh if i want to know bruce lee quotes ill just read his book or watch his films thanks. its amazing how many people try and pass off his wisdom for their own on here. but thanks anyway... the pretence was funny
god forbid you state a fact to somebody lol.
tang soo do is karatie, just a korean style. tang soo meens korean and do meens karatie.
