    She seems to present an unbiased view or her work at Amazon. Much more credible than most videos about how horrible Amazon is. Would like to hear more about working conditions as the excessive travel around the facility appears to be bogus based on the product coming to the pickers rather than the pickers having to go to the part.

    for me to return i had to have a doctor see me and say i could do it but the doctor refused to do thier paperwork and i ended up leaveing it permently....

      oh yes, I hear ya. At the end of my shift my feet and legs would be throbbing and there was no time to relieve it. It took me almost the whole 3 months to get use to that before it didn't bother me as much. I felt it the worse when I packed in one place. When I stowed and got to move around it wasn't AS bad. I definitely recommend wearing comfortable sneakers or something.

      Yogaaaaa. This is expected to be a physically demanding job. Train your body for it like you would with anything else. If the job is the only time you walk around, lift weights, get in your body.... well of course you’re gonna have issues. You can’t leave a sedentary life and work a physical job and expect to come out ok. I hope you manage your body pains. Look into yoga and a tens machine. They do wonders. If you have access to medical cannabis, I suggest a good topical balm. It works magic in seconds.

    Hi very good informative video. I have just completed my first week at Amazon. I work in a fulfilment centre in the UK, it is a brand new robotics warehouse. I was selected to work in outbound, or the docks, and it is a great area to work. You have the freedom to get about the warehouse. But it’s tough on your feet. We pack the parcels into pallets and get them to the trucks waiting to ship them out. The leadership team is a really good bunch of helpful people, the trainers are great too. All they want at the end of the day is for you to do your job. I’m pushing for progression, and learning all the jobs I can in the warehouse. I haven’t had any experience in picking and packing as of yet, but my manager has said I definitely won’t be doing that. On outbound we have a team target to achieve, and no personal ones. Overall I think I could be working for Amazon for some time. Well if I get through peak!

    I've worked at alot of places, but Amazon still ranks as the worst. I was a floor picker, and the rates were just insane. No matter how fast you go, it's never fast enough. Everything counts against you, and there are no breaks except for your lunch. Workers are broken, and taught to give up. I went in thinking I could work hard, and have pride in my job, but unless you work breaks, and have zero malfunctions with the equipment, it's just not possible. seen more people get terminated over rate than anything else. If the equipment jams and requires facilities, then you're screwed and will be written up. Seen alot of people with great rates, but just had bad luck with the machines breaking down and were canned. Glad I don't work there anymore, must have been nice to be a packer, most of us were written up when we tried getting out.

    • @jgdooley2003
      @jgdooley2003 6 років тому +2

      Unless human factors were causing the machines to jam or stall or break down it seems illogical to blame and get rid of a worker for not being able to keep up the pace. Surely the management should have been looking for trends in machine performance across multiple operators and shifts to rule out a human cause for a slow down. If , say, you were the only slow one on a machine and the other operators were hitting their rates then you may have a question to answer but if all workers are being slowed down by the same machine, the maintenance team have a question to answer, Also you need to be aware of tricks played by operators working rival shifts to slow down faster shifts and get ahead by sabotage and cheating. The maintenance guys might have favourites on a particular shift that they work well for and do shoddy work for the other shifts....You need to have enough knowledge of your machine, and procedures and the politics of a particular work centre to be able to keep ahead. Also beware of how some shifts may skimp on housekeeping chores to maximise rates and leave the unmeasured work to the other shifts, thereby slowing them down......

    Im trying to get in with Amazon. Initially I was a little hesitant about it having no actual interview process, but I'll see. I applied to a part-time one near where I live and a seasonal one in the neighboring city. I have the drive to work hard and making decent money, but I've kept myself in minimum wage. Amazon doesn't appear to pay a lot for these positions, but it would be enough for me especially if I could have something to supplement.

    I was Working in Dunfermline Fife - Scotland last year as a Christmas temp associate during peak time. I worked in Customer Returns and the job was fairly easy to hit the targets they given, IIRC 32 small boxes, 24 medium and 12 large. Essentially you were standing a your own workstation ad a conveyor line seperated these zones and employees where to grab boxes of the line, Scan barcodes from the boxes (Return labels) and process them on a computer which will ask you questions such as which type of sealing method does the item have and what type of damage has been done to the box.
    It was basically a multiple choice question scenario where depending on which you chose would determine which kind of tote it would get put in. Although it sounds easy, Its easy to make errors in as sometimes some of the items you process, they get put into an Audit tote and you will have people who will come around to make sure you are in check. I also worked on decant for Customer Returns which is essentially using those flimsy plastic safety knifes to open boxes for the associates and place them onto the conveyor (Just makes that job a little more easier).
    I would say personally, Its not amazon that gave me the grief when working there as the team leads were always helpful, friendly and polite, Offered me more training when I needed or asked for it and offered to be placed within several departments in the FC such as Warehouse Deals. The agency I worked under however was a complete nightmare. They would half a point you for being off on the sick, half point for clocking in literally 1 min late (with no regards to their clock in and out system when it started lagging behind, Which it did very often. I would happily work as a FC associate under amazon directly but as a temp associate under an agency, Id rather not.
    Now I currently work in the stow department at Amazon in Gourock - Scotland. Although Id like to write away with the experiences and stuff, I feel as if I have written enough already lol

      @SheraDiVito  7 років тому +1

      That sounds exactly right Brian! Im not familiar with customer returns but the way you described it sounds spot on from what I have seen. And I agree that sometimes the temp agency is the problem, not Amazon. How is Stow working out for you?

      The largest factories seem fairly empty when it comes to staff numbers judging by the videos on here, although I suppose that is due to much of the work being automated. The photos below are highly likely staged just to put a point across when it comes to hours and break times, although I suppose it all comes down to management and overall strictness.. I think there was a similar article before with Aldi or Lidl overworking staff too www.thesun.co.uk/news/5004230/amazon-warehouse-working-conditions/

    I started working at Amazon last year during peek. It was awful haha. I was in pick, working graveyard shift. If you are not used to walking 12-15 miles a day, every single shift, haha then you better get used to it. You only walk 15 miles during peek. During regular time it is more like 10-12 miles. We started with 4 days for the first week, then we went to the 5 days on 2 days off to 6 days on 1 day off weeks. They alternated. As far as points go, you only get 6 points when you are a white badge, before they will fire you during peek. If you have a Dr's note you have up to 6 consecutive days to be off. Write ups last 30-90 days. 3 write ups within 90 days and you're fired. As far as making rate goes, as a picker, it is not always as easy as you stated. If I can pick at least 250 items each quarter and do so with no mess ups, meaning picking before the blue time runs out or scanning the correct item the first time around, no rejections or damaged items then yes, rate will be made. If I have a "Hot pick pack" then I am going to be chasing around, up and down all around. Haha it is not fun to have hot pick as a pack. Having a trans pack is sometimes really good, and ppafe pack can also be beneficial. Trans pack you can get numbers from 10 items picked to 72 items picked. That is a really good pick pack to have. I went one shift where I picked 400 items each quarter, because I had a really good pick pack. I have also had time where I have had single large or single small pick packs and it takes a lot longer to get those numbers up. I don't suck at my job, sometimes it is just the pick pack that enables you to make rate some quarters. As far as blue badges being rude, some who have been promoted to problem solve I have had issues with, not everyone tho. I was eventually converted to blue badge after peek. If you are good at your job and can make rate and are in good standing then there is a good chance that you can be converted. Most people want to be converted into a blue badge. It does have it's perks. Vacation time, VTO-voluntary time off(not paid), VET-voluntary extra time(paid), PTO-personal time off(paid),etc. You also get $300-$400 worth of stock, with interest that goes up every year. They offer decent health care plans, if you don't have health care insurance already, and they also will pay for like 95% of your school after you have worked there for a year. You are so right about the microwaves in the break rooms. During peek it is so hard sometimes. Haha we were just talking about it the other day, how you might as well bring sandwiches or something you can eat cold. Anyway, enough of my short novel. Great informative video!

    yeah, tape machines - no tape guns @ all - they have shrink wrap though. I work in an automated Fulfillment Center & the pick/pack rates are seemingly negligible - until you do it for 9+ hrs. daily, week after week for all year long because they always expect high numbers from you whether you're having a good or bad day irregardless.

    It's easy, but you are timed every minute. And it becomes stressful and painful after 7 hours of endless packing. Everybody starts to slow down. And you still got 3 hours to go. Total of 10 hours, is brutal. Better get packing with those boxes and ship em into the conveyor belt. Oh, you gotta talk with your random coworkers, especially while working on the floor. It'll get lonely and depressing if you don't small talk and introduce yourself. But one thing is true. You'll never truly become close buddies with anyone while working at amazon, especially during the coronavirus. And they have everyone working randomly and different areas everyday, you'll never work with the same people everyday.

    All warehouse jobs are virtually the same, low wages because the insurance is cheap. Amazon is harder than most to move up, and if you're over 25, it is a little rough having a manger that is fresh out of college. Most warehouses have a no phone role for a few reasons: 1) safety. There is a lot of large equipment moving around and if your face is buried in your phone, you might get hit by those machines. 2) they have proprietary information inside as to how the robots work, what they do, and the inner workings of the company. Even ups has a no phone rule. 3) stealing time. Most people, if they had their phones inside, wouldn't be working. There are regular corporate jobs that are also moving towards no phones because people aren't productive. That said, most warehouses have an emergency line family and friends can call and the message is relayed to the employee, so, the argument about having your phone for any emergency is not valid.

    Never listen to the negative people, those were the ones that will try to look you down. If you found a way to improve at work, do it. Amazon requires applicants to fill out a Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) evaluation BEFORE one can even schedule for the hiring event. WOTC allows employers to get tax breaks for hiring certain individuals. Often, these tax breaks are significant. Taxpayers pay for WOTC. Do the math people.

    I work at a Fullfillment Center that is 1.5million square feet and has miles of conveyors. I was packing at a rate of 70+ packages an hour, Now I work in a semi automated section and pack at a rate over 300 an hour... if all goes well, I pack over 3500 packages a shift. we trade jobs every other quarter... only two people run this section, four if we run both lanes.

    Everyone should remember that every Amazon fulfillment center is different. Where I work everything is laid-back as long as you do your job. The warehouse is 1.2 billion square feet and I get paid 13.50 an hour on night shift. also the building is temperature controlled so no, it is not a sweatshop.

      Also it is good to remember that since everywhere is different, maybe it is worth trying out before assuming that we are all slaves and that rates are ridiculous. I am required to pick 60 units per hour and was picking 83 units per hour by my second day so, It's actually not all that bad at some fulfillment centers. You are able to make lots of friends and managers are pretty laid-back as long as you do your work. Also, with the whole break thing, we get to leave for Break 5 minutes before break starts to be able to walk there and/or drive and park your OP in order to actually get to your break on time. Everything just depends on your specific fulfillment center.

I never have or never do. i cant imagine walking somewhere. i have had a car always and pay dearly for it. insur and gas and maintenance and repairs and price to buy it. life wld be much cheaper without it...but i wld die trying to walk miles to and from work... like ten miles each way. then walking all over work whole shift. now i know this job will kill me! coffee will make people have to pee..so how do people keep up the pace without caffeine? B Vitamins might do the trick!

    • @milanomartin5417
      @milanomartin5417 6 років тому

      Katfishkelly M caffeine is actually a dehydrator. Water makes you pee, but you have to drink it to stay hydrated. You get a few breaks to relieve yourself and as long as you don’t get 30+ minutes of time off task within a shift, you should be fine with taking a restroom break here in there while not on break. You just have to make sure your rate is good to begin with. I normally reach 150-200 percent to goal consistently with every position I do. It isn’t that difficult to manage, especially if you stay well hydrated. The problem comes when you get lost in the work that you don’t make time to hydrate. When you start to dehydrate(you’ll be able to tell when your urine is dark yellow as they have charts posted in the restroom to reference) you are more likely to get fatigued. Instead of pushing through you will start to drag along. You’ll start to get brain fog, so you’ll keep scanning/grabbing the wrong items and you’ll be slowed down. So I’d gladly take the time to keep drinking lots of water and taking pee breaks if I know my performance will improve!

    Shera, you are an AWESOME person, these companies were lucky to have you work for them. I hope you saved for retirement, you will be tired young :-) I worked for the best company in the world (at the time :-) ) Hewlett packard. I met both Bill and Dave, wonderful people. Thanks for the insights.

    I did my drug test/paperwork end of Oct...... My start date was supposed to be Nov 9th. When I didn't hear anything I called they said I passed everything and they were waiting for a start date I'm like 🤦🏽‍♀️. Then they said oh the days and time you originally picked is not available. Then they changed to another start date and STILL NOTHING. Hell the holiday season will be over soon. I'm about to start looking for something else......sucks!

      I thought that it was a sweet way to say thanks to all who had watched her video to the very end! She loves her viewers! I am now scared of the job! I am not going to get any younger or more fit, they are apparently going to work me into the hospital or the grave! Any people over 50 years old doing this and able to keep up and not have a stroke or heart attack while being pushed this hard? I will be 53 soon... I have been working fast pace at a walmart register for over a decade. They just replaced all of our registers with self checkouts. cashiering is ending due to apps to scan and go and ways to order and pay before you drive to store and just get your stuff brought to car. store employees pick/shop for you. where do older people fit into this type of working world!

    • @SheraDiVito
      @SheraDiVito  7 років тому +6

      If you are a fast paced cashier you would be a great packer, because they stay in one spot and just pack pack pack. The pickers are the ones who do alot of running around. The work is easy it's just hard being on your feet for so long. There were people of all ages working there with me so I'm sure you will be fine!

    • @SheraDiVito

      Yes they do hire some full time positions but probably not many. They use mostly temps during the holidays and may hire a few from those temps but not many because their volume drops significantly.

    Group stretches, morning target setting, security searches clocking in and out, long queues at food prep areas, micromanagement of time...all sound like fun things to do in a fun place to work. Not for me. I worked in a similar American Multinational for 13 yrs and it was hell. It had a large impact on my physical and mental health and my relationships and family life. If you must work in such places make plans to get out as quickly as possible and keep an eye on your physical and mental health. I like that they monitor for drugs because the temptation to take anti depressives and stimulants would be very strong in a place like that esp if working rotating night and day shifts.

    Very informative, but I'm absolutely terrified yet somewhat excited to start working at amazon. I'll be working overnight(not like I have a choice because college xD) and my mom is going to be extra worried if I'm not able to carry a taser with me back to my car haha. This may be a dumb question, but are you allowed to just sit at your station during breaks? I'd rather do that than rush to the break rooms and be late punching in afterwards

    • @SheraDiVito
      @SheraDiVito  8 років тому +3

      You only punch out for lunch which is a half hour, and the supervisors take a break at the same time as everyone else so they'd probably so no. They wouldn't want someone unattended in the warehouse area. But you don't punch out for the 15min breaks, so maybe on the short breaks they'd allow it. You'd have to ask. Don't be terrified! Its easy I promise, you'll be fine :)

    Been working at Amazon fullfillment as Inbound STOW for over a month now. Dont really feel like a slave just yet, except when I'm put in the far east side of the building furthest from the breakroom. In a 12 hour shift our designated 15 min breaks are scan to scan. So its about a 5 min brisk walk, bathroom pit stop, 1.5 mins of sitting to walk back and set up the line to scan again. Doesnt even feel like a break. But positive note, I love my coworkers, the warehouse is temp controlled and the training was pretty thorough. I have overheard from various coworkers the difficulties with making rate as it goes up weekly. During our training week we were told not to worry about rate, just about quality. I asked if we'd be trained later about the best way to stow so we can make great rate and the response was noncommital. Asked around to the stowers who have been there longer than I and some have said that it depends on the water spiders and cherry picking of the totes (which are usually set aside for day shift, while we work night shift), and the checkerboard system. Still, it almost seems like there is a cheat to making higher rate because those that are over 100 with it go slow and have no problems and then the newer ones are stowing as quickly as possible and they barely clear 80. This seems to be what im most frustrated about.

    • @SheraDiVito
      @SheraDiVito  7 років тому

      Yeah I didnt mind Stow when I did it. I definitely think your rate depends on what items you're putting away, big stuff or say a tote of cd's. Do they allow you to use the button that lets you input multiple quantities of the same thing at once? I forget what its called....

    I had an interview today for the new one being built at Doncaster, England. There were 5 shift patterns but all of them included the weekend and I have my own business which means im on my stall every weekend up until the end of oct (and all my dates are booked and paid for) so I explained this and brought my diary with me (to prove I didn't just want weekends off to go out getting drunk like a lot of people would) and they couldn't accommodate me at all. Retail positions always require you to work weekends. And he mentioned all the extra hours id have to do as well, on top of all the 10 hour days. BUT ASIDE FROM ALL THAT - when we 1st went in, they showed us a video of what we'd be doing and my jaw hit the floor !!! AB SAILING !!!!!!! You were strapped into these moving boxes which shot up as high as a football stadium, prob about 80 feet into the air . . . maybe more . . . and you were up and down on them all day for 10 hours picking in these very very narrow isles. It looked SO!!!! claustrophobic. It wasn't normal picking that you'd do in a normal warehouse where you had a little pushcart and you were passing people all day long so you could say a quick hello to someone you were passing. You were just stuck in these harnasses all day, getting flung about up in the air !!!! hahahaha THE VERY IDEA !

    • @SheraDiVito
      @SheraDiVito  7 років тому +1

    • @SheraDiVito

      I knew they have big buildings that have multiple floors but I guess I just always assumed they had elevators or something normal to take you up and you'd work on one floor and then conveyors would bring the goods down.
