A billion years from know, terms like "spaceship" and even "people" might be utterly meaningless. Heck, we could figure out AI this decade, immortality this century and mind upload the next.
@@zsoltsz2323 I've been trying to explain to people how laughable I find the concerns over gender identity and sexual orientation in modern culture when there's decent odds my generation may be the last biologically mortal in history.
@@MinionNumber3 I have the same optimistic vision of the future as you do. We'd both like to change our mortality, which is a fundamental change to our bodies and brains. In my case I'd rather be made of information.
Having an identity is important in connecting with others, being true to yourself, and making hard decisions about life. For us it's about mortality and (I assume) seeing the possibility of being more than human. For others it's gender. They're the same as us, making things complicated by changing the definition of humanity in a world that demands simplicity and hates change.

This channel keeps me excited and grounded because they constantly remind you how much bigger things are on a solar nevermind galactic scale.
The worldbuilding you put into a explanation or setup to an example is better than some actual sci-fi. You imagination never ceases to amaze me: a civilization with over a trillion nations and hundreds of millions of wars, yet is still peaceful just to the sheer scale.

My favourite fictional sanctuary dwellers are the Kadesh from the Homeworld series. Being told that they won't allow your ships to leave was chilling.
Also quite tragic. In the process of getting your freedom to continue your quest for Higaara, you have to destroy them, and find out they are descendants of the same fleet you are.
@@Roxor128 Yes. They would have been a formidable ally if they were convinced to join you but they were just too fanatical about the nebula that protected them.
(I liked their captured multi-beam frigates though!).
Doc Smith Skylark III (1930) has the hero chasing the remnants of the genocidal Fenachrone who are fleeing the galaxy. That series had faster than light travel (very early sci Fi) and the chase speed and distance was so great that after destroying the Fenachrone refugee ship, the deceleration and turn around was already into Andromeda so he decides to explore that in the next book.
Loved that series and all his others when I discovered them in the 70's when a teenager, thanks for resurfacing the memories. Cheers from Sydney.

Entire human nations sometimes spend 150 billion dollars to fight tiny organisms too small to see. (The CARES Act) Because viruses are capable of exponential replication. If I were running a galactic empire, I wouldn't ignore extragalactic sanctuaries just because they were small.
I come back to this video a lot just to hear the lore, especially about the 400-year war fought over a space scraper.

It's got his military experience applied to strategizing the means and motives of space conflict, trans humanist mind uploading and black hole farming, cosmology, and some mind bending abstract logic about Sci Fi concepts. The only major topic missing is The Fermi Paradox.

Isaac Arthur's sci fi scenarios are always so mind blowing. Miles, or maybe even, Light Years ahead of any sci fi writer out there. Everything else seems so tame in comparison to these stories you create just to prove a point, and all backed up by hard science. Amazing!

Another informative and entertaining video about a topic of high interest to me, currently.
Writing a novel about humanity at the end of time can inadvertently channel one´s inner megaloma, so it´s reassuring to pretend to know that science is supposedly on one´s side.

Do you ever still feel nervous when you put out a vid you've invested time, energy and yourself into?
Less nowadays or early on, but in the year 2-4 times when the show was just starting to get big I often worried about that, its why we have weekly episodes truth be told, it forces me to get scripts done rather than reworking them constantly :)

As most of this channel is grounded in known or at least theoretical science I am curious which of the most popular science fiction movies/television series bothers Isaac the most. For example I have a very hard time watching Lost in Space. I am more okay with Star Wars because that is more of a fantasy set in space though and physics doesn't really play a role in creating the setting.

You make me want to read Dune again, and also make me want to pick up the books written after Frank Herbert since in the sixth book it was implied that people had spead put and are now returning but massively changed and in huge numbers.
There will always be someone upon seeing smoke rising from a far off chimney would say that it's getting too crowded and move on.

I think star cluster like the one the sanctuary is in are perfect places for interstellar empires because of how close each solar system is to each other
Only problem with that is that globular clusters tend to consist of very old stars, so they would be very metal-poor.
Such as Orion Empire and Thuban Kingdom?! lol...

Thank you for the video! Motivations to chase are null for advanced races because they can provide everything they ever need themselves, and if you had something then other things nearby would have it too, like any element or solar energy. Only we humans are apparently at least previously cray enough to follow specific text instructions to the letter (that we wrote ourselves) rather than by the spirit of it. Still, cool story concepts.
If you had giant eyes, the size of skyscrapers, you might want to find sanctuary in the quiet hum of intergalactic space.
Very cool how similar to Battletech the first centuries / millennia in your timeline proceed. Blessed Blake, Comstar, the Clan invasions.

Contemplating this... and you mentioning making a statite on the far side of a star on the rim. If I had any of space to hide in I might instead pick one of the nearby dwarf galaxies and do somewhat the same thing. Perhaps one of the smaller less appealing ones. I'd have some resources and ability to move, yet still be quite isolated.
