  • France's left-wing alliance is projected to have won the most parliamentary seats in what is considered an unexpected upset in the French snap election. The New Popular Front (Nouveau Front populaire - NPF) was formed in the eleventh hour to combat a far-right surge led by Marine Le Pen's National Rally (Rassemblement National - RN) party. The Australian National University's Dr Romain Fathi says the National Rally leaders would not find the results 'surprising' because the French constitution is designed to prevent extreme parties from gaining seats in the national assembly.
