Proper recording of vocals in a good environment is most important. Mic chain that fits your voice, mic technique, gain staging is what makes “pro” sound vocals. You should be 85% “pro” upon recording. Why are there NO videos showing proper recording techniques. That’s engineering 101.

Hi! I am in Lamont Holden's class and I found this video very informative as a beginner in mixing vocals! How do you know how much texture to add to your vocals or is it a preference thing?
@@vonyeaanderson3681 it’s mostly preference for sure.. once you know what sound youre seeking then you record accordingly… there’s nothing wrong with trial and error until you find that sound
Good question… a combination of EQ’s and panning will ALWAYS do the trick… wether you spread the bass wide and bring the vocals in some or vice versa, you can adjust until you get the separation you’re looking for.
@MusicProducersBlog I asked cuz when he soloed them it sounded like there was something like reverb or small eq adjustments . I was listening off a phone speaker so that's probably it I'd be interested to what he says
Great question.. I process the vocals all as a group… this gives me the ability to have a little more thickness when I EQ… if I need to after that I’ll go in and eq things like adlibs separately within the aux group
Should we sidechain the reverb to give more spacious sound or does it matter what if we do or not? I like the one take spacious sound like gloomy lush natural high type of reverb when the bass knocks in rap, how do i get the right setting for compression or type of reverb for that?
Sidechain if the mix is too busy (or dense) but on a song that is sparse the reverb will add more thickness to the mix, so you don't want to sidechain in that case. Getting the right settings for compression will differ for every track, there's no one-size-fits-all. The type of reverb will depend on the song, if you want brightness then a plate is good starting point, if the vocal is too thin, then a chamber or room reverb can help thicken the voice, etc. I think it's best to study how different reverbs affect the frequency spectrum to avoid guesswork. Good luck.
That depends. If predelay works for you then, just do that, and don’t duck the volume. If you put all your tracks into one reverb aux, then yeah, sidechain the volume.
You’re right… moving too fast honestly while filming. I usually always bounce records out 24 bit 44.1 wav files before sending them to my mastering engineers… good catch. Thanks for tuning in. 🫡

What specific techniques or adjustments do you recommend for mixing vocals to fit well within a beat that has a lot of bass and heavy instrumentation?
Sidechaining, Dynamic EQ, selecting your most important elements and making dedicated space for them within the frequency spectrum.

Are you processing the stacks before they go to the aux? Or are they all dry and then you processing them as one?
The stacks are not being processed before they go to the aux. The only thing done to them before hitting the aux is volume balance and panning.

@@cosmo5179 if you’re talking about the lead vocals then those are panned up the middle of the mix
@ the double takes also? I pan double stacks 5 left 5 right bc they sound a bit strange both in the middle. Was wondering about the chorus stacks
