Schumanns music is amazingly beautiful, he brings so much excitement to his pieces, like happy imaginative pieces that make you feel good, rather than chopins and Liszts elegant and deep music, Chopin and Liszts were masters of the piano, and I can't believe how much talent they had, but something about Schumanns pieces are so much more soothing. H is probably my favourite composer, to bad he went insane. Love his music
It's hard to believe that Schumann struggled with depression so badly.. You'd never know through his music. Although I feel that there is a slight undertone of somberness and perhaps even emptiness in his pieces, most of his works are "sweet and lovely."
Well these are the pieces he wrote for Clara when they were separated and would have been before he got a bad "depression." He was yearning for her and one can definitely her it that in his pieces. I like your attempt of pre-diagnosis thru music however. :)

I first thought that the dissonance at around 0:27 was an error, but I then noticed it appeared again at for example 1:11, and in other recordings. It is an interesting thing that dissonance. Does anybody know what it "means", why it is there etc.?
A pleasant enough selection from Schumann's music for solo piano but "best of" has to include the song cycle Dichterliebe and the Piano Quintet while "best known" demands the Piano Concerto. Still, a good introduction to a life enriching composer.
Best known is hardly a very interesting topic unless you enjoy statistics and best "opinions, subjective matters etc." don't really "have to" anything. The freedom to love and enjoy life as you please is one of the most precious gifts we have, and ,poetically enough, one of our most tragic burdens. Still, I'm going to sate my curious appetite ;) Thank you for pointing that piece out to me, it is great to encounter things so randomly just by strolling around the internet.
The Piano Concerto is best known for a reason - it's simply fantastic, one of the greatest orchestral works ever in my (of course subjective) opinion. No best of Schumann collection could be complete without it. This is as you say, more an introduction to Schumann.
