  • OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY: In this episode Stacy is going over how to make this home remedy. SAMBUCUS NIGRA - BLACK ELDERBERRY
Elderberries pack a very nutritious punch, including minerals like iron, potassium, phosphorous, and copper, as well as vitamins, such as vitamin A, B, and C, proteins, and dietary fiber. Add some of the beneficial organic compounds that function as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents in the body, and you have one powerful berry!
Some of the most important health benefits of elderberries include their ability to boost immune system function, protect against bacteria and infection, slow down the spread of cancer, moderate the digestive process, prevent the development of diabetes, reduce the pain and speed associated with autoimmune diseases, help with weight loss, lower blood pressure, and alleviate allergies.
A Final Word of Caution: Considering that so few species are edible, it is always wise to find elderberries in a licensed and reputable store OR grow them yourself. Don’t pick wild elderberries and it is suggested to cook all berries before eating, as they may contain dangerous traces of cyanide. Furthermore, being allergic to plants in the honeysuckle family is not uncommon, so be careful about being up-to-date on your food allergies before adding elderberries to your diet. Finally, elderberries are known to act as diuretics for some people, so if you are already struggling with kidney problems, then elderberries may exacerbate them.
With the cold and flu season upon us and the unhealthy diet most people have this natural remedy will combat the germs that are out to get you
For the kids we have some syrup for coughs and sniffles
Hope you enjoy this information and also remember the better you eat the more your immune system will be strong enough to keep you healthy

Thank you, Stacy! When I make my Elderberry syrup I don't boil it but simmer until it loses 1/2 the volume. Then I put it through a nut bag and drain it over a bowl. After it cools some but still somewhat warmish I squeeze the bag to get the most juice possible. Then I add raw honey and that's it. I added too much honey one time...but my honey had crystallized so when I was stirring it in, there was a big clump that didn't dissolve yet. It was then that I tasted it and decided it was plenty sweet so I poured it off into another bowl and took that big clump of honey that was infused with Elderberry juice and stuck it in a pint jar. I was tickled that I ended up creating a new product...Elderberry Honey! So I made syrup AND honey that day!

Sambucus Nigra is indigenous to Scotland. ..we have a lot, also birch and chaga growing on the birch, blackberries are everywhere, if you can train them into hedges they make a wonderful starter for old fashioned hedgerows (you need other stuff like hawthorn, dog rose, gooseberry and lots more. Its a wonderful natural fence. And once you have the whole thing growing you can incorporate other edible or medicinal plants and you just have to walk along the hedgerows to collect them (that's why they called people like myself and Bess the old lady who taught me, hedgewitches. I know a lot of people are sceptics but Bess also taught me to dowse for water and I normally use broom cut into a kind of y shape, it has to be new and no matter what you do, if you can dowse, if you try to resist the pull, the sticks will break...same with the metal ones that cross over. I never tried it with a pendulum but I am sure it would work but the action of walking would make it hard to read. These are old skills people used to need and I am so lucky to have been taught. I am really pleased to see you both carrying it on.

Thank you for sharing Stacy and Doug. 👍👍🇺🇲Also, elderflower water helps soften the skin, lighten freckles, and soothe sunburn. The Coahuilla indigenous tribe of North America used the elderberries as dye, food and medicine. During the berry season, the families largely subsisted on these fruits, together with chia seeds.

I make elderberry syrup (without alcohol), boiling dehydrated berries in spring water, using slippery elm, cinnamon sticks, dried rose hips, and fresh ginger simmering on medium low for an hour then adding honey after it's cooled some. I love it. I works fast and it's so soothing. I am so glad you did this video on how good elderberries are for your health! Thanks!

A few months ago I began getting the feeling I was getting a cold and didn't have any Elderberry syrup made so bought some, two kinds, and double-dosed it every two hours. By the next day, I had NO cold symptoms. I am totally a believer in this. I haven't made the tincture yet but I will be learning from you, how to do it. I just make some Elderberry syrup yesterday and after making the first batch, I used the berries again and processed it again, then drank the liquid over two days. Then put the berries in the compost. ~Thanks for teaching us.

I have got to make some of this soon! I love how easy it is to make our own herbal remedies! I can struggle with anxiety at times and my favourite tincture for that is motherwort. I had run out and was having a hard time finding any motherwort around. We were visiting family and I got so excited when I found a big beautiful plant flowering in my dad's yard I sent my dh out to buy a bottle of vodka so I could make a tincture right then and there. After watching me make it, it became somewhat of a family joke whether it was the plant or the vodka that helped with the relaxation lol. A friend of mine grows it now though so no more "in field" tincture making necessary ;)

I really appreciate you showing us how to make the tincture and the syrup. We've got berry bushes at the farm, but have only picked the raspberries as we don't want to accidently use berries that could be poisonous, by accident. Between those and the various other bushes, we need to talk to the dnr or county extension to ensure we have edible plants, not dangerous ones.

Thank you for the recipe and info. More info on elderberries! This video is now four year old...you have probably spent more time with Terry now, would you change anything about the recipe with your new knowledge of elderberries? Considering a small orchard for us here. Love the idea of sharing this with friends and family. So much to learn! Thanks again!!

I know that Scotland seems inhospitable but ever since I was a small child a friend of our family taught me about what was safe to eat and also what was good as medicines. I remember picking wild raspberries, strawberries (but you really need to know what you're about to find wild strawberries and they're tiny but so much nicer!) Wild cherries, elderberries, hazelnuts, blueberries and brambles or blackberries as other people call them. I also know where to get medicinal herbs in the wild and we have millions of birch trees so we have chaga and most of the edible wild mushrooms but I don't advise picking fungus unless you really know what you are doing. I think that's about the tip of the iceberg because we have lots of garden escapes like rhubarb and others also growing wild.
Btw I love your cottage and your lifestyle and can't wait to finish this cabin so I can start making preserves (and jewellery which is the main reason I need an off grid cabin...hammering and setting off fire alarms doesn't go down well in flats in London, and all the really nice jewellery needs a good bit of both lol!).

    This is such good information.
Before we came to Cambodia, I was able to buy and bring tincture with me to use here. After covid, when we were finally able to go to the USA on furlough, I looked to buy more, and all I could find was gummies.
