My dad played for Newtown juniors in the 1940's. Long time ago now. He loved that club till the day he died. He switched to St George when they folded.
great stuff. Old Manly Warringah Sea Eagles supporter but love to see these old gems. Thank you. My grandchildren willl be annoyed when I show them this stuff, but secretly they will study it. :-)
He was an ace of a player. Always on the case and very capable. Just short of Test consideration, as so many good forwards always are. He himself said on the telly in 1976 or 1977, " There just happens to be a lot of good lock forwards running around at the moment ", regarding any Test selection.
This version of the game was fantastic. Winning scrums against the feed. Throwing the ball around. A scrum won against the feed has it pack down again in today's version. Its so stupid they allowed it to be fed to the Lock. Haven't watched footy for must be 30 years as this currant version is a joke. Guess I will be watching these golden oldies till they right the wrong.
One of the Dawson brothers featured in this game is now facing murder charges, 41 years after his wife vanished. The schoolgirl he married, after his wife disappeared, is the main Crown witness against Dawson aged 73. A bleak house, indeed.
And Gary Sullivan. Big time bank robber. I know, not the same thing, but nevertheless. I didn't know he was playing until I heard him being replaced in the 2nd half.
Dawson's now been convicted as well as for other sex offences with minors. He'll die in jail, where he belongs. There players were treated like gods back in the day, subsequently they became drunk on their own importance and felt they were untouchable. (some, not all, some went on to distinguish themselves after football). I met many drunken ex-football heroes in a career in Policing, and always got the 'do you know who I am' attitude. Edit: I had John Maguire (70's Cronulla Sharks prop) as my maths teacher in high school. A lovely guy and one of nature's gentleman. I was saddened to hear he passed away, earlier this year.
Newtown had been continuing some of their 1973 form, still playing decent football, and this, versus a usual top rater in St. George, probably warranted a Cricket Ground fixture. Still, this ' good crowd ' was still less than 17,000. The previous week's Sydney Cricket Ground fixture involved Manly-Warringah versus Eastern Suburbs which cleared 50,000, easily the largest crowd of the entire season barring the Grand Final. The collective suspicion was that those were the two, and they categorically were, at least by the end of the minor premiership.
You went to a 50,000 crowd fixture at the SCG, with your dad, and a minor premiership fixture at that " Well, blow me down. I did exactly that in 1972. With my dad to St. George versus South Sydney at the SCG. 48,000 / 49,000 crowd. Minor premiership round. On the day or two previous people were flocking in by train to Central from the bush, with blankets over their knees, coming in for the clash of the previous season's grand-finalists and the two most prolific clubs up to that time.
Barry Beath scored a try down the Randwick/Anzac Pde end in the corner after a good 30m run. Elwyn Walters scored a barge over from dummy half Randwick end. Second rd Souths won 17-7
The match I was at was St. George winning 21, or early 20s, to 7. For every time Souths posted points someone nearby on the Hill had a small batch of colored confetti to go but there was never much call for it. Suths were only one penalty goal til late in the match with a consolation Elwyn Walters try and he got an elbow in the nose from Billy Smith before stoically placing the ball over the line for a try. Could hear the impact from the Hill. Probably a broken nose. Goodwin running rampant for St. George and doing the goal kicking. Watched most of the match again on replay from 6 pm that night on the telly. Souths actually won the return minor premiership clash later on in the season. I thought it was 18 to 8 but apparently 17 to 7. St. George eliminated Souths in the semis.
It was Newtown who buggered St. George's 1973 season [ the year before ]. Took the pre-season off St. George in the final with a Ken Wilson conversion goal from the side-line on the full-time whistle, and then they eliminated St. George in the semis of the premiership in extra-time.
@@jonglewongle3438 wouldn’t you love to get good footage of those days😁there’s a bit but heaps more in archives😩i watched that being a dragons man it’s extremely difficult to find anything but highlights from anywhere before’80👎🏻i rather watch that stuff than the modern game that’s for sure😵💫
@@poitor5915 Indeed. You are correct. I would not mind seeing some of that stuff again. Pre-80s. But there was a fire in the ABC's Gore Hill facilities at one time. Purportedly it annihilated much, if not all, of their rugby league television tapes. I'd love to see all that 1970s minor premiership stuff, much of which the ABC televised live and not just delayed telecast. Balmain versus Easts, 1971. And Newtown 12 beats Balmain 10 in 1976, even though I was an ardent Balmain supporter. Even if to just to relive the angst. And so on.

Messy scrums, a lot of offloads, so much dropped ball and the size of the in goal areas ! Newtown had Chris Dawson - wife killer, Gary Sullivan - armed robber, and soon to have Paul Hayward.
Something about newtown. Wasn't much later Paul Hayward got done for drug trafficking. Read the book Damage Done by Warren Fellows. It'll make you think.
Great football to watch. This is about the only video you will see of Brian Smith in action. He could play.

Old Magpie supporter but always liked the Jets.

Col Casey coached me when I was 20 in 1986 at the Umina Bunnies . Top bloke
Neil Pringle was a good lock forward in his day

Dawson killed it.
Newtown a great foundation club.
Brian Smith playing halfback for the Dragons along with Lord Ted and Rocket Reddy.
How good was Roy Ferguson’s try with 2 minutes to go! Highlight of the game!
So many great memories. Thank you.
I had forgotten what an absolute mess scrums used to be back in the day. And I never realized Pethybridge ever played for St George.
I got back from overseas on the Thursday and on Saturday took my girlfriend (now my wife) on our first date to this game.

Keith Page as ref. Looked like Dracula with his collar up. Made greg hartley look good.

@@YeviscountAt least Keith Page was fair, (look at the 73 gf) and was not on the take like Hartley.
