There could be a very interesting reason as to why a lot of Europe's top players back in the 20s to 40s were scoring a heap of goals, unlike their South American counterparts. The cause is attributed to the World Wars and how a lot of European men were fighting in these instead of playing football. The few great players that remained, the likes of Joseph Bican, Fernando Peyroteo, etc. were kinda stat padding during this period.

Peyroteio never played aggainst bullshit teams. All teams in Portugal obeyed nowadays logic. 3 major teams, Benfica Sporting and Porto. Then you had the teams that struggled aggainst them, some of them don't even exist anymore but they beated Benfica Sporting and Porto same as today. Those teams would be CUF, Belenenses, Atlético, Boavista, Académica, Casa Pia or Académico do Porto. Most of the clubs exist nowadays and some play on the top portuguese league. Peyroteio was a real phenomenon back then and much of Sporting Club Lisbon trophies are owed to him. Certainly the portuguese league was at a premature evolution state but Madrid and Barcelona also influcted massive wins aggainst their opponents back then as well as Italian or English major clubs, that's how it was back then.
