A powerful tropical typhoon, Shanshan, has hit the coast of the Japanese archipelago. The storm brought heavy rains that caused widespread destruction, flooding, landslides, and power outages.
The island of Kyushu, Japan's third-largest island, was the first to be hit. By the time the cyclone's column reached the Japanese island of Kyushu, the wind speed there reached an incredible 70 m/s (252 km/h or 157 mph). Landslides and roof collapses caused by Shanshan killed at least four people and injured about a hundred.
At least 237,000 homes were temporarily left without power. Trains were stopped in the southern regions of the country, highways were closed, and Japanese airports cancelled about 700 flights. Large industrial companies, including Nissan and Toyota, temporarily closed their factories throughout the country.
The coastal city of Miyazaki bore the brunt of the typhoon. There, gusts of wind damaged about 200 buildings, injuring several dozen people.
Some areas of the prefecture saw record amounts of rainfall for August. For example, the city of Misato received a total of almost 800 mm of rain in two days, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.
Although the main blow fell on the southwest of the archipelago, the storm also caused heavy rains in the central and even northern parts of the country. As a result, large areas were flooded, and numerous landslides and rockfalls occurred in the mountainous areas.
The arrival of the typhoon did not come as a surprise to the country's authorities. At the beginning of the week, 810,000 residents of the central prefecture of Shizuoka on Japan's main island of Honshu were advised to temporarily evacuate. Another 56,000 people have been advised to leave their homes in Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyushu Island, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.
The typhoon has not completely died down yet: in fact, after leaving the Japanese islands, the storm has turned around and is returning. According to JMA forecasts, the storm will reach central and eastern Japan, where the capital Tokyo is located. Meteorologists say Shanshan is moving slowly, meaning the tropical storm could gain strength again and bring even heavier rains. Some areas of Japan could see more than 700 mm of rainfall in the near future (in other words, the region will be covered by a layer of water 70 cm thick). More than five million people living in the south of the country have been ordered to evacuate immediately. The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning residents of the western and eastern regions of the country that they can expect more landslides and floods.
