A very memorable pilot comment was when I was traveling from Jo’berg to JFK on an SAA 340. We stopped in Dakar in the middle of the night as you need to for fuel. Just before take-off the pilot said “Let’s get this big, beautiful beast airborne”. That plane is definitely ‘alive’ in a very unique way.
Beautiful take off. For somebody that never liked flying, I still get nervous but I love the feeling of being pulled into your seat. I feel/imagine it being like a giant Canadian goose finding its slipstream and heading south to more hospitable climates for winter. The sheer economy of effort. So regal and elegant.
It's a year on, about 2 months ago I travelled on a Lufthansa a340-300. Luckily they're still here but I was supposed to be on the -600 and the -300 is going too. F in the chat for the big quadjets
@@fimo7631 It's good to have the 343 but the 346 was on another class with those engines and the lower deck lavatories. I still can't believe LH is not bringing back any of them
An A342 (Conviasa) flew over my house a couple years ago and I was very pleased to see it had previously flown for Air Tahiti Nui - and I had a bunch of pictures on my phone of that exact same plane that then flew over my house! Was kinda surreal. I heard it but didn't see it as it was night time.
Wow that was fast, only about 28 seconds to rotate! I had a similar experience in a 747-400 once, AF BKK-HAN, so quite light, I also timed as 28 seconds. Really amazing to feel so much acceleration shove in a large widebody! I love the A340-600 though, so sad they're mostly retired, I even have a 3-window cutting of a Qatar A340-600HGW in my basement (sentimental reasons). If only the economics had made sense for an A340-600NEO 😞
I never noticed before that this aircraft has such an amazing sound. And the Take Off Power sounds sopowerful that the Acceleration thrust almost sounds like Idle 😅
Beautiful lighting. I once landed at Kuwait International just after sunset, where you could still see the glow of the sky, but also see the glow of the lights of Kuwait City while still being able to see the city itself from just a few hundred feet.
My favorite airport and my favorite airline...also love the sound of those engines! Have taken Lufthansa to Europe many times and can absolutely recommend it. Thanks for sharing this beautiful video.
Been flying this plane myself a couple of times.... I mean exactly this individual plane. I was in love with that A340-600. It was a bit tricky to land because it is very unforgiving about flying below approach speed by just half a knot. But the worst abnormal I had with it was when half of the toilets did not flush because of a faulty waste-water-tank-indicator.
The coolest Airbus of all time. Sadly, there is no room in the world for quad engine jets. Just like the 747, this will be phased out in favor of the a350 and 777.
@@smeshsmesh9695 Where did you see 777 orders getting cancelled? The only "cancellation" over the past few years is Qatar converting some 777 9 to 777X freighter. The 777X had a positive year for orders in 2021 whereas 787 was in a negative.
Lufthansa was the best when we went to Octoberfest. Got to Munich and got on the bus and was at Octoberfest in no time. Just make sure you have a place to stay. And many people spoke English. It was a blast.
Good news: Lufthansa will bring the A340 600 back for one year from summer 2022 on Munich routes. They say it's because they need first class from Munich and only their 747 800 and A340 600 have first class for now. I'm already planning my trip on one
That was a huge engine Derating of the full Man ToGa Take-off to the Derated CLB Thrust. The older A340-300 with the little CFM's just from the A320CEO they needed ALL the thrust during Take-off and CLB. I am sure to resch cruising the older serie A340's would use the MCT Thrust setting otherwise you're climb rate with a full and heavy loaded plane would take enormous amount of time. I am curious how fast they can reach cruise at 40.000ft compared between the older and newer if you use only MCT Thrust in both during ascent. Nowedays the newer generation high bypass Turbofan engines are build to generate crazy amount of thrust however to preserve the engines with less maintenance and longer lifespan they will use less and less than older ones with smaller bypass ratio's.
The best looking sub sonic aircraft of all time just beautiful, just looks like a proper plane, long, sleek, 4 engines, just awesome. So disappointed that they are being withdrawn from the major carriers..
My favorite plane is definitely the a340-600 It is an amazing plane, i flew a bunch of times with the a340 I flew between Madrid to Los Angeles with Iberia it was a 12h flight 👌🏼
So happy for you that you got to fly currently the longest single decker jet in the world! 😉👍 For a plane of that size taking off with full power and how quick it took for that thing to get airborne, that’s some serious acceleration... I could only imagine the G-force you felt being pushed back in your seat!
I luckily got to fly the A346 multiple times in the years before the crisis. And the way the takeoff felt was amazing. It was the strongest I ever experienced. The A340-600 is way more powerful than the A340-300.
@@larissaa3465 The most powerful takeoff I felt was the one time I flew in the 777-300ER. I was pinned to the back of my seat during that takeoff like I could barely move! My head also went flying back during the engine spool up and I got a little bit of whiplash!
planes normally do a derated takeoff- to reduce engine wear - the fadec computes the necessary thrust for take off based on several factors... and this thrust is always below the max thrust

Agree with you, so cool to watch!
The only plane that never caused any casualties. The A340 -series. IN terms of passenger safety this is the best plane ever built.
That's because they go back to the gate with issues so often, ask Philippine Airlines :)
@@TheSpritz0 Well, they have to be withdrawn anyway. They are old and not economic enough in this day and age.

That giant Canada Goose will keep flying south until it reaches New York on a winters day in 2009, where a US Airways A320 is currently taking off...
