It's that emphasis on people, community, and story that brought me to the channel in the first place, it's also what has kept me here. One day, I hope to be able to come down to Texas to take a class, but for now I am glad you're here. Cheers!
Engagement comes from passion. I was a geology major and landed in the Wine and Spirits industry . I had a geology professor who often threw his arms in the air and would say, " Because the Earth is Dynamic". I carried that with me. It helps to be in the industry when working with wine, because Wine is Dynamic!
The focus on storytelling & connecting with people over a shared hobby was my favorite aspect of class. Don't have any Old Pepper Single Malt Single Barrel, but I have an Old Pepper Rye Single Barrel. That'd do. 😏
This is an amazing way to learn for me personally, I'm a big component of tell me, teach me, show me, and your work never disappoints!! Cheers! I'm really happy your here too!
Ever since the vault/tribe split, I've watched every video on this channel because of exactly what you're talking about in this episode. Most episodes, i care more about the story you've telling than the whiskey you're talking about. I think the problem is, thats the hard part to teach. Its much easier to learn facts than to learn good storytelling and the two things require a completely different kind of brain. It takes a special person to have both skills. Hopefully your program attracts that kind of person so it can succeed.
Agreed. One could ‘talk at’ or ‘speak to’. Maybe a weak analogy on my part. If you don’t effectively engage the audience, they won’t come away with anything. They could leave thinking, ‘I want to learn more and this is interesting’. They could also leave thinking, ‘I don’t know anything and the presenter was sure to let me know it’. You have helped me wrap what I’m trying to say in the right context. Thank you for these videos.
I am writing this after doing the advent calendar video. I wouldn’t say I have a preference but I enjoy Daniel recording off the cuff. These story based videos are well thought out before hand and enjoyable. We haven’t had much of Daniel off the cuff of late, I am enjoying that doing the advent calendar. Food for thought, here is to you good human! 🥃
I love that dedication to people and storytelling. I can't wait until I am able to come go through your Somm program sir. Until, thank you for another great conversation 🥃😊
I’ve done the other wine program called WSET award in wine up to their level 3 and yes it’s all about facts and it’s aimed towards the people in other parts of the industry. I if you want the best storytelling with wine, you have to visit the regions were the winery is.
5:50 That's interesteing. I had kind of figured the formalities around fine dining were there exactly to allow the guest to focus on the experience. Basically, all of these exterior things are predictable and regularized, so you can focus on enjoying your company and the dining/drinking experience. Without the standardized etiquette, I would be concerned about all sorts of stuff regarding the staff and the venue, but since all of that conforms to standard, I get to focus unworriedly on the experience itself.
I guess facts and information are the best way to transfer quick value and to sell a program because it's an objective and cold hard truth you can sell. Community and human beings are something more long term and it may sound less appealing as you can't really create a bullet point list for your next ad. That said, I believe your approach is definitely the best one as it promotes and builds things that will withstand the weight of time ... Plus, it attracts the right kind of people.
This is exactly why I left the CMS program. I definitely am on the education and experience side and wanted people to have a great time and get as excited as I was but the places that move you forward in the CMS program and community, you have to be of the right pedigree or else they're just going to shun you and your attempts.
The big brands based out of Kentucky and elsewhere seem to be making the kind of single malt a bourbon drinker would drink. Or the kind of single malt a crown royal drinker would drink. Instead of the kind of single malt a single malt drinker would drink.
Ive made some really good friends through whiskey alone separate from any other facite of my life and i think you nailed it! Its about the people and the stories and sharing with friends and knowing that wine people are douchebags!😂
U really do hope that the time of elitism is going away. Not just on Whisky but generally. The world of drinks may, however, be a good nutshell in which to deliver an example.

I'm glad you're here, Daniel! Thanks for curating an excellent community and program!

I loved visiting James E. Pepper Distillery, great whiskey too
Classic Daniel, videos like this are what I look forward to.

That is 100% true as long as you know what all of the standards are
Divided we fall, together we drink!
Cheers🍻

Facts and data are important, but if that's all you've got, you may as well be an actuary. May your program thrive!
Welcome all Whiskey Vaulters to Hot Takes with Daniel!

Daniel, what cigar would you pair with a glendronach 21?
Honestly, any. but I'm really digging my Father series these days
@ My Father is great stuff; thanks ✌️
Seems like the west coast distilleries are making better single malts. O and some from Texas. Kentucky ones seem to be so so.

For the algorithm 🎉

I'd argue every community has douchebags...... :)
Is what you are doing in these episodes your concept of story telling?
Ish
