Seeing beaver castoreum used in whiskey is SUPER interesting to me and probably appeals to me on some level due to my love of fragrances.
Beaver castoreum is often used in some of my favorite perfume bottles to provide a very raw masculine animalic note or depth to the formulation.
Examples: Tom Ford Oud Wood Intense and Tobacco Oud Intense, Chanel Antaeus, Amouage Oud Ulya, Nishane Mana
It is often used to provide or elevate notes of smoke, leather, and tobacco.
In small doses it does great work to elevate and add depth to sweetness as mentioned with the vanilla flavoring (sort of like the fragrance worlds "umami" concept).
Great video and fun blind. Cheers!

This brings back memories. A friend of mine gave me 2 here plus the Crab trapper you mentioned in a double blind, in that I didn't know what I was drinking. Here are my notes and guesses from that experience:
Eau de Musc - Castoreum infused Bourbon
Nose: Caramel Corn and Hay, slight fruitiness
Palate: Honey Caramel corn and wheat up front, gets a little sour in the middle, faint sour apple towards the end
    Finish: Wheaty sweet corn, short
Verdict: C+ | Nothing wrong with it, but feels watered down. Doesn’t make much of an impression.
Bottle Guess: Ragged Branch wheated bourbon bottled-in-bond
Graverobber Unholy Rye - rye whiskey infused with maple syrup tapped from graveside maple trees
    Nose: Musty honey, slight funk
Palate: grainy honey, slight wheatiness on the middle, graininess turns to grapiness towards the end
    Finish: grapey honey
Verdict: C+ | Honey dominates the whiskey and basically overrides any character that the whiskey has. However, there is no flaw here of note, and the honey flavor is pleasant. This would go great in a cocktail
Bottle Guess: Ragged Branch infused with honey
    Deerslayer - Venison Flavored Whiskey
Nose: Spoiled milk with slight peat and mesquite, slight soapyness
Palate: light caramel with a very light bbq note up front, turns slightly meaty and savory in the middle, herbal notes appear towards the end kindof like tyme
    Finish: slightly sweet herbs
Verdict: B- | The nose really had me worried on this one. The palate was quite a pleasant surprise. An interesting pour with a lot of flaws.
Bottle Guess: Loch Castle Blended Scotch Whisky
Crab Trapper Whiskey - Green Crab flavored Whiskey
Nose: juniper and honey, slight lactic notes
Palate: sugary juniper up front, green pepper in the middle, slight mixed berries on the end
    Finish: fruity and vegetal juniper
Verdict: B | A very engaging gin profile that is soft on the juniper and has some more flavor and viscosity going on than the typical gin
    Bottle Guess: McLintock's Gardener's Gin

I've not had Town Branch, but I have a bottle each of Oregon Spirit wheat whisky and bourbon, and I really like both. But they are *not* traditional tasting. They also have BiB expressions of those two, and also a rye and a wheated rye 😮 - I want to try all four.

If you're looking for a different whisky, I highly recommend Abasolo. It's a Mexican corn whisky made from 100% cacahuacintle (ca-ca-wa-SEENT-leh), a variety of corn that only grows above 7,000 feet in a fairly small region. It's very different from anything else I've ever had, and I really like it. But alas, it doesn't have a weird name. 🙂
21:21 I love catfish and hush puppies, but I'll never drink a whisky which has those flavors. Food belongs on the plate, not in the glass.
26:09 "Mom - come smell the Beaver Butt." If I'd ever said that to my mama she'd've slapped me into next week! 🤣
    28:27 The look on Trenton's face - priceless. 🙂

I like the comment "..at the moment' ______ is my favorite". My favorites change from time to time. I'm a big fan of WT 101, but I also like OGD 114. Add to that the fact that I went to 'Whiskies of the World 2024' in Chicago, and I found a few that I liked (Uncle Nearest). My tastes change, and I think most people's tastes change. It all depends on "The Moment".

“We had all the single barrels; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful boom of allocated whiskey. So now, less than ten years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Louisville and look East, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark, a dram of beaver-butt-flavored- bourbon - that place where the boom finally broke and rolled back.”
Years after the bourbon boom, we’ll remember the days of Great American reckless abandon in whiskey experimentation: a little venison here, a little durian there.
